Full Version: Layering..are you a three layer player or more..

Hey All,

For me being comfortable on the slopes goes hand in hand with skiing/riding well. Most of us know that it's all about the number and type of layers that we wear. How do you dress based on how warm/cool it is outside????

For me..

5-layer player...when it's mad cold...not mad brick..but mad cinderblock..when there are frostbite warning on the ski areas PA system..when your face could turn Blue. When the TV weather forecasters warn people to stay indoors or risk death. For me..a good baselayer of synthetic frabics..perhaps heli-hanson or EMS..skintight..a girdle if you may..followed by a second baselayer like a turtleneck..followed by a thin fleece..a thick fleece..and then a shell..Being a 5-layer player is reserved for the most brutal days on the hill..obviously keeping the face covered up is important and a dew-rag under the helmet helps as well..but it's all about keeping your core warm..

4-layer player...when it's cold..not mad cold or mad cinderblock but cold enough that you know if you aren't a 4-layer player..your lift rides could suck. When it's like low teens or below.,,,in the west.below zero..because the dry cold is so much milder. Underarmour..turtleneck or long sleeved polo with the collar popped..fleece and shell...

3-layer player..what I am the most..halfway between being a 5-layer player and a layer player. If it's 20 degrees and no wind in the east and in the single digits or teens out west..being a 3 layer player is ideal..Still rocking the underarmour..but there's a layer missing..the 2nd layer is a turtleneck or a longsleeved polo shirt with the collar popped but you either have a fleece or shell on the outside....at this level the lack of layers makes for mad steezy speed and air..due to less bulk..

2-layer player..I'm a two layer player alot..either when it's mild or due to being stubborn..I've been a 2-layer player in some frigid temps..you can go anywhich way..t-shirt and fleece..t-shirt and Members Only Jacket..polo shirt and wind breaker..turtleneck and Eagles jacket..whatever you want..but these are the days when PBRs are consumed in the terrain park..the lift...the double diamond steeps like Razors Edge, Cliffhanger and Challenge along with the cruisers...extra stoke if you're riding like Superman with a cape..with your jacket unzipped..negative stoke if asscrack/coinslot is exposed..

Layer player...skiing with one layer..t-shirt, wifebeater, mesh tanktop, Hawaain shirt, polo shirt, dress shirt..or Carhart jacket...extra stoke points for cleavage..on ladies only..exposed trampstamps..and chest hair..minus stoke for flavor savor soul patches..and hippy chick with hairy armpits..

Add your layering suggestions and commentary if you have a short minute..

Long sleeve shirt, then tall T, Then hoodie or coat depending on the temp.

Ninja suit + whatever the day requires.

If you regularly wear 4+ layers then you need to buy better layers.

I rarely wear 4+ layers..usually 2 or 3 for me..unless it's mad brick or mad cinderblock...What is a Ninja suit???

i usually wear a long sleeve and a tshirt under my jacket. if its cold i'll throw a thin sweatshirt under the jacket too. i tend to stay away from underarmor and anything skin tight because it seems to ride up. i guess all the twisting of my trunk and skin tight stuff just dont mix. I do where underarmor pants under my pants on the really cold days however.

If its 20 or below I usually wear a undershirt, long sleeve, another t-shirt, then my jacket

If its above 20 I just wear an undershirt with a t-shirt over it.

I hate under armor. Always rides up, and i don't really think it keeps me any warmer. Under my pants i have some aK expedition pants that are awesome.

and Im pretty sure the ninja suit is a Compression base layer made by Burton.

There would be no reasonable explination for me to even attempt to squeeze all my girth into one of those under armour products.

Spandex Enormity comes to mind.... by MOD or something like that.. (I dunno wasn't my taste in music anyway..)

I normally just wear long johns under my ski pants.
On top, I always wear a softshell... but under that I usually wear this wicking shirt that I wore on time in a pinch for time and it worked so well I made it a staple in my skiing wardrobe. (It's like an eagles dri fit or some shit like that..)
If it's really cold I have a thin wicking fleece pullover, and if it's really really cold then I wear my shell and use my soft shell underneath.

I have only ever worn 4 layers a handfull of times tops..
I have NEVER worn 5 layers and probably couldn't deal with the lack of movement I'd get.

Melissa
Wow, um, I honestly don't layer a whole lot. My core area never gets cold. Usually I wear some sort of long-sleeved shirt with a thin wool sweater over it. If it isn't cold, I'll just wear a long-sleeved shirt. Of course, I wear my jacket over top.

For the bottoms, I'll just wear stockings/leggings depending on how cold it is.

The only things to get cold are my feet, hands, face, and butt (from sitting on the lift).

really? snowboarding is the only time i dont mind wearing it (Nike generic under armour lol)

My legs never get old, i always just wear sweatpants under my snowpants
nick malozzi
Usually rock under armor pants and top, and a synthetic t-shirt. Then snow pants and jacket. That covers most days for me, but on colder days I have a long sleeve EMS tech-wic half zip that I toss on to keep the core warmer. Not sure I will need that this season as my new jacket has a thin zip in synthetic hoodie.

As far as the under armor debate, maybe it just fits my body type, but I don't mind it at all. I wear it snowboarding, kayaking, and climbing if I get out in the cold. Works great for me.

I NEVER wear any kind on long pants under my snowpants. Boxers, Shorts, Then snowpants and my legs never get cold.

I feel way too constricted if I wear long pants under my snowpants.

i like wearing sweatpants underneath. but then again my snow pants had huge holes in the ass so sweatpants were kind of a necessity lol

same here. shorts under my snowpants work out just fine for me. maybe on an extremely cold day i'll wear a thin pait of sweatpants, but that only happens once or twice a year.

Base layer - Something that wicks moisture. It can have insulate but doesn't need to, depending on temperature. Wool, synthetics, and silk do best here.

Insulating layer - Fleece usually works best, but thick wool can do the trick. I've used cotton here before, but it's really not for the best. This layer is optional based on temps. This layer may also consist of multiple layers if temperatures dictate.

Shell - Water resistant, wind resistant, good seals against snow at all the openings. I like synthetics, but down also works well, and builds in an outer insulating layer.

I can't imagine what other layers you could possibly need.
GrilledSteezeSandwich
I thought about this topic and I decided to breakdown my layering as a percentage of my ski days. The past few seasons I've averaged 100+ days per year and this is how my layering has been.

1-layer...10 percent of the time..on the warm..55+ degree spring skiing days.
2-layer...20 percent of the time..on the mild 40-55 degree days.
3-layer...55 percent of the time..on the typical 15-40 degree days
4 layer...15 percent of the time..when it's zero to 15 degrees or below zero out west..
5-layer..once every season or two..when it's just brutal outside..

PASRs own BigDaddyK used to rock 8 layers on 10 degree days,,,crazy

I layer a lot. Having less than 5% body fat doesn't help very much in cold weather.

Underarmour, long sleeve T, jacket. Take off the underarmour if its hot out. Or really late/early in the season no jacket.
Underarmour, sweats, pants. Shorts if it isn't that cold.
But my hands and feet are my problems. I wear ski socks with some ankle socks on top. And stretchy gloves inside some DaKine gloves and they still freeze.
Justin
I have some nice sessions diffusion underwear as base layer. I usually throw something on top of that and then outerwear, only a t-shirt or long sleeve though. Never really been too cold either way, most of getting cold for me is in the face. Bandanas suck on those frigid ass days, the moisture from your breath makes it all smelly and stuff then it freezes. I usually get really sweaty when I ski, so I'm normally dropping layers, not gaining them.

I've got plenty of fat and it does not insulate I swear!!

I love my mittens--they keep my hands so warm. I highly recommend them.

Helmets help alot as well..they are just so much warmer than a hat and you can keep the vents open on warm days...Melissa you should get a helmet..especially since you enjoy speed.. skier-pinkfem.gif skier-pinkfem.gif skier-femcool.gif skier-femcool.gif

Under armour, fleece than my jacket 90% of the time. I have a pair of burton tight fitting pants I wear under my snowboard pants. My legs are always the first thing to get cold.

I don't wear a helmet because I don't do jumps. That's my risk. I HATE wearing a helmet.

In other news, I just found some merino wool underwear that I might buy to keep my butt warm on the lift.

I'm sorry but that's the lamest excuse I've heard in a while..

Sonny Bono wasn't doing jumps either...

Yes. I'd much rather just wear some sort of light weight first layer, then i have a north face fleece, then my coat. Under armor just gets super annoying.

x2...when i wear top underarmor, it rides up, and annoys the hell out of me when it ends 1/2 way up my stomach...

X3 I'm using Polar Max stuff, works like a charm and isn't skin tight.

When i was in Jackson Hole and it was balls cold, all i wore was a helmet underarmor cold gear on top and bottom, a fleece and shell jacket and pants and i was comfortable which is KEY. Never wear cotton because that can literally kill you in low temperature high activity situations. Instead of wicking, cotton absorbs all moisture from your body and holds it so you sweat your dick off, then you stop moving for a few minutes and all of the sudden your colder than a witches titty. Ive trained in cold weather environments while in the military, and that was one of the best pieces of knowledge i took away from serving. Only layer to be comfortably cool, you dont want to be toasty before even getting out there, as long as you can feel the cold but not be shivering, thats all you need, your body will naturally take care of the rest. I hope that helps

i absolutly hate under armor pants, i usally wear shorts and boxers under my snowpants
up top underarmor, mine is long enough it doesnt ride up, its the metal model, with really thin fabric under the arms then longsleve then tshirt
lilpeterr
I usaully wear underarmour up top, and termal gear pants for the bottom and a t-shirt over the underarmour. Snowboarding pants and jacket. When its not really cold I sometimes wear shorts instead of my termal gear pants. And usually a jacket over top or a sweatshirt. I hate sweating while I go snowboarding so I wear something light.
