Ski Season 17 - 18 thread

Toast's fantasy football draft is tonight. Football means fall. Fall means RideDelaware will post about leaves. RideDelaware posting about leaves means ski season is coming. What are you all doing? For me it'll end a bunch of days at Blue. Last year's UT trip complete with Pats SB victory was f-ing sweet but I hear J Hole may be the hot spot this year. Perhaps it's time to make the pilgrimage? Probably getting my 4yo out for the first time this year as well. Should be a good season!

Nope, I checked my Strava and it is telling me that it’s still very much biking season. Although I did buy an extra lens for my goggles a few weeks ago, I’m not counting that as a qualifier for starting a 17/18 gear thread.

Good, early start to the thread. Root is right, though. Still running (and biking) season. I can't wait for fall weather. I can't wait for Sunday football. And I can't wait to think about skiing in a few months when guns start blowing out the nice.

I am still in summer mode too. Was in CB this week and woke up to 37 degrees, glad I wasn't camping. But looking forward to doing the women's clinic at Eldora again. Also checking out their new high speed 6. Blocked out a whole week for CB on the rental calendar. Hopefully life will allow me to stay the whole week.

Standard season at JFBB for my family and friends. I took a new job so I won't be able to do my midweek get aways this season. Looking to do Mount Snow for a long weekend in march and NH over spring break.

Are you still teaching?

I plan on skiing a lot this season and gonna take off as much work as possible. I think I've only taken 2 days off since April.

Pension is the same since I'm in the same state. Took a 3 year pay cut, but will make more money after year 4 since they are a higher paying district.

Nice. My friend who teaches in Philly didn't get a pay raise for 5 years and finally just moved up 2 steps plus got about $6,000 in back prorated pay for the last year.

She must love teaching...

Oh yeah. The first week of her summer break she was at a math conference all week..she got paid for it but still it cuts into summer break. Then she had a Lego conference for a few days that she got paid for and got a modern lego set for her classroom. Leadership meeting last week and she teaches new teachers for a few days this upcoming week. She makes like $60k a year but after deductions for retirement, health insurance, student loans, rent and car payment she's paycheck to paycheck.

If she is making 60k a year and has to live paycheck to paycheck then she is doing something wrong.

$60,000 a year is $5000 a month...after taxes is about $3500...after retirement contributions and health insurance contributions is about $3,000 a month after $800 a month student loans is $2200 a month..car payment/insurance/gas/easyPass(she commutes to philly) maybe $600 a month down to $1600 then rent and bills and food not much left. That's why a lot of teachers work summer jobs. I'm a minimilist, I lived well when I was making $40k but never had debt.

I make a bit less than 60K a year and pay almost $700 a month in student loans. Not complaining, it was my choice, etc. But teaching requires advanced degree work but doesn't pay well, particularly in the early years of your career. So you defer your loans because of low income while you're starting out, and sometimes get thrown off track by car repairs, med bills, or whatever, and next thing you know the interest has accrued to med-school levels on a teacher's salary. I love my work; wouldn't want to do anything else and I'm resigned to never owning a home or having a secure retirement. But we need good teachers and this isn't a way to attract them, because let's face it, it's a sucker's game, financially. (I work a second job year-round to pay for ski passes and travel and such.)

Wow Sally and medical school graduates have much higher loan payments than that. I thought one of the benefits of being a teacher is the pension. I can only be a salesman..that's what I'm good at.

Yeah, but I'm on an income-based payment plan, so my payments are lower but I'll be 70 before I pay it off. I work at a private school: no pension. This is the life I chose; no whining.

Anyway, sorry to hijack.  I'm very psyched for ski season! I may get a MAX pass if I can swing it. I have a free place to stay in VT, so it would be a good way to check out lots of new mountains.

Nice what mountains are on the max pass?? What's the cost of it?? I actually haven't been to Vermont in almost 7 years and I went to college there and used to ski there a couple trips a season. I do want to return to Stowe sometime again. I've just gotten into a routine the last several years of skiing Blue most of the season and Jackson hole in late January and Colorado in April and not driving much.

5 days at each mountain, no blackout dates. Considering it costs close to $100 to ski at some of the big resorts, it should be worth it. I put down a deposit on the $599 price this spring; it's up to $679 now.
