@Jersey Tomato where do you usually ski?  I don’t think I’ve met you yet and you’ve been posting since 2019.

Blue was my fave til the prices went up, & did Camelback sometimes til they started charging for parking now I'm doing the Indy pass for Montage & lil Shawnee - got 2 days each this season- mostly ski the Cats & Indy areas now

  2. So I'm reading a Storm Skiing Journal & Podcast interview of Camelback's GM David Makarsky & it mentions nearby Pa. ski areas. "Closest neighboring ski areas: Shawnee Mountain (:24), Jack Frost (:26), Big Boulder (:27), Skytop Lodge (:29), Saw Creek (:37), Blue Mountain (:41), Pocono Ranchlands (:43), Montage (:44), Hideout (:51), Elk Mountain (1:05), Bear Creek (1:09), Ski Big Bear (1:16)" - - (check out link below)

Now I started skiing a long time ago & thought I knew the inside baseball of skiing better than most- but I've never even heard of some of these places! How about you PaSki&Riders? Ever been to Pocono Ranchlands? or Hideout? What's the deal with these little hills? How can they survive if they don't tell the public they even exist?

Well he should do something about these lifts cause they're pretty archaic. Hopefully his daughter can talk some sense into him

Can you imagine how a HS lift would transform that place!

  4. At Montage last week I got to talking with an older dude who was waiting for his grandkids to show up- says he knows Elk's owner personally, even did some contractor type work for him years ago- says he's such a cheapskate that when those lifts broke down last year he fixed them with used parts not new ones, to save a little money! so he won't ski there anymore- says owner's 91 y.o. & the guy's daughter is heavily involved & may take over some day- he's heard nothing about a sale & doesn't believe the old man would anyway. He also said that the owner was so pissed about a nearby condo development going up that he banned the condo owners from skiing at Elk- which was the reason most bought their condos to begin with- wtf!

Nice pics.   I normally walk down to get my pass and leave my stuff in the car.   Then start on the north face.

I went again yesterday- this time I parked in the lot closest to the top of Phoebe Snow lift, booted up there, then skied down to the lodge to get my pass validated. Later got my lunch from my car & enjoyed it sitting at one of the picnic tables by the top of Phoebe Snow lift. When you know the layout it's pretty easy to get around.

  6. Fast hardpack under beautiful blue skies, temps in upper 30s. Bumps on Boomer & White Lightning. Used the Indy Pass. Cool antique toboggan. I liked everything but *The Big Stairs* you have to carry your equipment from the lot down to the lodge...& back up. And what's with all those tents?

Except Lazlo knew the deal at platty when he bought it and so does everyone else in that area.

He has zero pockets and no investors of merit, its like hickory being pissed at Wyndham. Platty doesn't compete with Bell state or not and it's the states job to make money with its assets.

Plattekill has to market the difference in experience and profit from that, straight up they lose to bell everytime or Hunter or Wyndham and they all lose to WF/killy which is 2/3 hrs up the road.

Full disclosure I'd much rather ski platekill but to claim they can't compete due to state coffers is bullshit. It doesn't compete because they have a niche product most snow sports people are less interested in.

Elk will always be on VR or KSL'S hit sheet all you have to do is look at a map but it's not a great place to run a real estate scam so it will be less tempting.

Platty also attracts free heelers in winter & MTB in summer. I'm glad they're doing better & love skiing there- I like all the ungroomed terrain cuz it means less crowds on those trails.

It’s also fairly controversial that ORDA operates those areas. Having the backing of the NY state government means they can invest millions annually into projects that may see frivolous to some (the belleayre gondola for an example). This is creating an issue where the state run ski areas are competing against private businesses. The owners of plattekill are not too happy about that, and rightly so, as people have to drive past belleayre with their shiny new lifts to get to a smaller ski areas whose investments are directly related to how many skier visits they get rather than how much tax revenue the state brings in.

As for Elk…I feel like there have been rumors about the sale for years but it never happens. It may be more that elk is a fairly big ski area for PA, and other areas of that size are being gobbled up by epic and ikon such as camelback and blue. I would expect blue and camelback to be full ikon within a few years to compete with vails stranglehold on PA. I could see vail being at least interested in elk as their only pocono areas are JFBB which are super small. Ikon is the superior product in the pocono-ish area.

Then again, Belle was there first- before Platty, Huntah or Windy.

i think the state hates the fact they own Denton Hill, and are just super happy they have found someone to "try" to run it, however, i just feel like this isnt going to go well, but thats just my gut.  Unless you are Vail, or Alterra with deep pockets and multi mountian passes, buying/running a ski resort in our area, with limited season and huge operating costs with snowmaking, is a loser.

I think they will throw money at Denton with the best intentions, then throw more money after it to improve ROI, and then it will be scraped again.  (fyi, im not against the state throwing money at anything ski related)

Then again, ORDA runs Whiteface/Gore/Belleayre just fine. True it's a govt agency not a private company but they're making it work.

  11. Wanted to hit it today but a huge accident on 80 East cost me so much time I switched to Shawnee which is much closer (see my TR). Made lemonade from those lemons as everything turned out good. Will hit Montage with my Indy pass some other time. Really wish Blue was on it but they "went Epic"

  12. Tried to find some on Blue's website but it's really no help so can anyone rec something decent within a 15-20 min drive? Don't need anything flashy but then again want to avoid bedbug type places. TIA

  13. $123 for a lift ticket now? Damn.  I used to be able to get a 4 hour weekday pass for 30 & change but now Blue wants a kings ransom. I really like *Blue Mountain the true mountain* but this is nutz. I don't ski Blue enough to justify a season pass so any tips on how to save on a daily pass would be appreciated.....

  14. yeah he posted on fb Ski The Northeast group- "Today was special because it was hard and fast, just the way we like it! I normally dont run my apps anymore, but the mountain felt very fast. I almost cracked 80 mph on day 80!!!...While other mountains in PA and NJ are closed for the season, we are still full send at Blue." with a shot of his app at max 79.6 mph.....

What does the blue crew gotta say here?

Sad to hear. The person was skiing alone? Probably not a great idea, but sometimes if you really want to do something, and you can’t find anyone to go with, you go alone.

He might've made it if someone was with him. From these threads it sounds like Raymonds Cataract is basically a narrow icefall with sheer 30' drops.

You won't find me on it, buddy or not.

you know blue management is reading this and facebook and saying "I stole over 2 weeks of skiing from these stupid mother fuckers and they are still giving us money 8 months in advance!"

....and then they leave the mountain cams going on the website to really rub it in....I'm a true Blue supporter as much as anyone, but this just ain't right!
