i really think they want to be last to close. even if that means having just vista open.

temps aren't great next week for snowmaking, but the opportunity is there to squeak out one last wknd if they just patch up a run or two.

are any other mtns still claiming they'll be open after this wknd?

Elks last day for the public is this Saturday, Sunday employee party... Then it's over..

These lifts are so slow and I'm skiing solo so I feel like I'll be posting a lot today. Just warning you all now. Trade off is literally no one here coupled with spectacular snow conditions.

    @rummy are you around??

Stop by the bar... I'll buy the drinks...

  3. Zee Lights.   Elk Report..It never got above 32 today.  Guns on Delaware, Terrain Park, Lenape and Snow Bowl all day.  Very surprised they haven't started on Slalom yet.

WVIA day as well as college Wednesday today so much more crowded than a usual Wednesday. Quad opened .. no lift lines to speak of.

Snow was loose packed powder, no ice, no brown squirts anywhere. A typical Elk overcast flat light day... Beer was cold...

I'm looking forward to an Elk visit in late Jan!  Rummy, is there a picnic area/fire pit off the beaten path at Elk or am I remembering that incorrectly?  Near the upper parking lot?  Haven't been to Elk in a few years.

Yes .. about the middle of the West slope, skiers left.  Locals call it the halfway house.

It can be accessed from the upper lot, but getting there is tricky and you cannot park there.

  6. My understanding is most of the restrictions remain for the owners of property in VOFS.

I spoke with a VOFS owner while on a lift a couple of weeks ago and he told me they now can pay a large amount (I heard 10K and 15K, from others, he was not specific) for a 20 year exception to the no SP rule. This is for the owner and his family. If he paid double it would be a lifetime exception.

Definitely get your details in writing before purchase.

im a huge fan of heat pumps.  Basically all the Older homes up by me in the Poconos are electric baseboard.  So of course people are always on FB asking how to combat $300-400 a month electric bills, even though they are part time.  I have been saying heat pump for years, and i get the "its too cold for heat pumps in this area", from the experts on FB.

I have to be going on 10 years since i put the one in, and then i moved that one to a bedroom, and bought a huge one to replace that one that was in the living room, which is also the kitchen and dining room.  I just got my bill yesterday, last month was $85.  Granted, there was just one real cold snap, but i was also there for 8 days around Christmas, and i think my shed is better insulated than my house......its so bad.   I put both of them on 50 when i leave, and they probably do 75% of the heating when im not there.

I would put one in my primary home, but that one is gas, and its probably pretty break even between gas and elcetric most times.

As much as i like mini-splits, i dont like the octopus climbing up your wall going to multiple head units.  i did a pretty good job of disguising mine.

Does yours auto switch between oil and heat pump?  what degree?

Mine doesn't switch. When I'm at TLCITW for a few days, and the forecast is below 30*, I'll turn off the HP system,  and set the oil burner at 58*.

When I return to a "cold" home I turn up the hot air oil burner until I'm at 68* then turn the HP on and oil burner off.  I can usually get the home back up to temp in a half hour or so.

I'm really surprised with the efficiency of the heat pump system both for heat in winter and air conditioning in summer. My summer electrical usage was 25% less with the new system than the old...

  8. Yesterday the oil company delivered my first automatic winter season fill. I needed 4.2 gallons of oil to fill the tank @$3.999/ gal.

This summer I replaced my old air conditioning system with a new heat pump system, and have been using that almost exclusively for heat. Temp set @ 68*.

An hour after the fill up the oil company called to ask if something is blocking the fill pipe....

Serious question about Elk. How's the wifi in the lodge? Are there any spots where I could realistically bring a laptop and take a work call or two? I have a free ticket for Wednesday January 4th but don't want to use a vacation day on Elk when I'll need them for Colorado.

Yes free WIFI... Many peeps .."working from home"

Quad is supposed to open Thursday,  although they were grooming lower Tunkhannock and the snowbowl yesterday so it may open today. No crowds.. bar's open beer's cold...

Edit.. the Herminator said there were a couple of icy spots on upper Tunk..

  11. It's a very unique joint... The architect who designed it always wanted a yacht. So he designed as such and stood it on end. There are 4 levels with 2 bedrooms, a loft, 2 bathrooms, small kitchen and dinette. A living room built around a central wood burning fireplace, and a small utility room. There is also a one car garage which is used for firewood, ski, and snowblower storage.

Ships ladders(steep) connect the 4 levels. The entire interior is trimmed in mahogany and knotty pine, the bathrooms are tiled.  There's also a mirrored ceiling above the captains' quarters bed. The architect was a bachelor and I've heard stories of crazy coke fueled parties held there in the early 80s.. All cabinets and beds are built-ins and the only extra furniture is one chest and the sectional in the living room.

There's about 1200 Sq. Ft. of living area. And it sits on a 2 acre, completely wooded, sloping plot of land. There is no summer mowing of grass... sorry Toast. 😃

  12. We're at TLCITW opening up the cabin for the season.                   LE snow showers whitened the partially frozen ground (2"-3" deep), several times yesterday and last night the guns started blasting.

In the 34 years of owning TLCITW this is the earliest time I ever saw/heard them blowing....
