As long as you enjoy what you do as a ‘job’ and it allows you have the life you like, you’re in a good spot.

I’ll never hate on any bodies job.  Unless you’re really rich you either have to work or be homeless/on welfare.  I sometimes envy those who are overnight stockers at Target or Costco..sure it’s lowish pay but also low stress!!!!

mid-week Okemo and limited-season Magic.

I hope you get some good snow at Magic but they're only open Friday thru Sunday so I hope one of your weekdays off is Friday.

The new owners have been making a lot of improvements. They likely won't get the Black replacement installed this year but they say the green will be running.

I’ve been lucky that the last 14 years I’ve worked at the tombstone company business has always been good. Our worst year was about 70% as much business as our best year so things are pretty consistent. The fact that we have a solid network of dealers helps and also the fact that the business has been in existence since 1929. Not to toot my own horn but I’m a really good sales person. I’m good at creating value and urgency without being blatantly persuasive.

I know one gentleman who has a franchise of 8 monument companies in Long Island/NYC and North Jersey.  When he had one shop I’m sure he did well likely made very low 6 figures but he was hungry for more and bought up other monument companies and now he sells the most memorial stones of anybody in the northeast. He likely makes over $1 million a year in income/profit and is about 55 years old.  He’s also from a rich family but work is his passion.  He lives to work.  I work to live.  I couldn’t imagine opening franchises..that’s where major risk comes in and I already had my unsuccessful stint as a gambler...maybe I’m complacent but I like the way things are now.

Off to karaoke.  Ski season is soon. Sorry for the threadjack.

I don’t think you’re complacent. I try to tell people, that sometimes you just have what you want and what you need. I’m not a greedy man. Once I get to a point where I’m making what I want, have the house upgrades I want, and can snowboard where I want, then I won’t need to make anymore money. Right now I do these new projects because A. The buildings are at the end of their lifespans, B. My grandfather did no site design when he built them, and C. I need something to do, because it’s super boring when we don’t have a project. The projects are only once a decade, so it’s not overwhelming. These upgrades should take me well into the latter years of my life. I shouldn’t have to do it again.

I’ve been lurking their thread on AZ. They made a smart call to not get rid of Black before the new lift was installed. At least they will be able to run it at the reduced capacity this season if they need to. I’m less concerned about their lift capacity for this season than I am for parking. The place has two relatively small parking lots. They need to figure out how to make it easier for non hardcore Magic followers to enjoy the mountain to help pay for these upgrades.

For a WROD or in general? If the latter does that mean no more VT or ADKs?

Greek Peek is about as far as i would drive to ski one trail with 10000 other people.  I would much rather wait to make a trip when there is way more terrain open.  I would rather meet up with you guys at Blues parking lot, don my ski gear, look at green slopes, talk about how epic the season will be, drink a beer or two, and do dumb things in the parking lot, than drive to Killington for one slope, that has you walking up steps.

I'm not in a great spot.  The charm of having a lot of flexibility in the winter, with sooo much BS the other 9 months of the year, is wearing off.  Benefits are such a big deal though.

I have just decided, i am going to write a book.  Anyone that is not me, would find the everyday bullshit i have to deal with super funny.  the stuff employees come up with is priceless.

An employee just stopped at a job about 4 miles from our shop.  got out of the truck, left it running, and shut the door.  the door somehow got locked, and his phone is sitting inside the truck.

What does he do?

Still doing landscaping? I have several friends in the business who say that getting/keeping good help is the toughest part. High profit margins/profit though. It is hard labor. It’s a young mans game.

Obviously he walks the 4 miles back to the shop and leaves the truck running.

Id be surprised if its high profit. Same with building maintenance. You end up doin volume at 45/man hour. Not worth it a lot of times. The commercial cleaning side goes even lower cause everyone and their grandma has a bucket with rags.

It’s incredibly high profit if it’s done right. One friend started his company at 30, is on track to retire at 45, and he only runs two crews. One grass cutting crew and one landscaping crew. He holds about 150 lawns and does some one off jobs here and there.

I would love to do some landscaping. For some reason cutting grass, edging, trimming all of that is extremely relaxing to me. Plus when it looks great at the end there's a nice sense of satisfaction. I miss cutting my own grass now that I'm in an apartment complex.

Hmmm

According to my friend’s, the grass cutting aspect is the most mindless part, but also the least profitable. You have to cut a large amount of lawns in a small geographic area during a short period of time to make any money. They basically keep the grass cutting side of things because it leads to the customer also wanting their landscaping done, which is a much higher profit margin business. Huge markups on the plants, labor, and design, all wrapped into one price.

Well he can’t call ghostbusters with no phone.

The guy who cuts the grass at my work makes the equivalent of $25 an hour(he told me) but the kicker is he works 12 hour days and 7 days a week 6 months out of the year and in the winter gets a temp gig at the amazon warehouse.  Millionaire next door he’s not but he makes a decent living.
