Headed up to JF this morning for an hour of skiing before the trail got too crowded. Good snow conditions on One Park. A few small features on the top third, but you could open up your turns after that. Skied from opening at 8:30, started getting a little crowded about 9:15, and left a little after than when a lift line started. Had my Carv batteries charged today, unlike yesterday. Carv app totally changed for this year. Looks like good improvements.

Arrived in parking lot at 8:30. After getting our 2 day local epic pass card we were skiing by 9:00. Really small crowds most of the time we were there. Snow was great early and with plenty of space on the trails my youngest son worked on keeping skis parallel, turning and stoping without wedging. We started on the really easy greens a few times then progressed to Easy rider. Moved over to Janes lane for 2 runs and then moved over to Exhibition and Dematte's demise. Lapped those trails for awhile. When the lift line got a little longer I told my son we would over to challenge lift and ski Thunderbolt and Challenge. I was a little disappointed to find Challenge lift was not running so we headed to the lift on East Mountain. River Run looked nice but Brady was not ready for it today. Guns were blowing all over the mountain. Huge whales on Floyds and Lehigh. Looks like they just need to push that snow and both trails should be open soon. We did a run on Challenge first and had a great run until the very end where I hit some ice and almost went down. We then did a run on Thunderbolt. Snow was not as good as on Challenge with many more icy spots. We did another run on Demattes and the snow was started to get scraped off so we called it a day.

Awesome day overall with small crowd and longest wait to get on lift under 5 minutes. Pretty great for MLK day. I think it will be better the next time we go if they have Ridge run, Lehigh and the rest of east mountain open to spread things out even more. I had a great time at JF. It is a really good mountain for families.

Drove out for an evening ski session at Boulder. Got to the mountain and the gate was down and there was a sign saying Boulder is closed for the season mid week days. Nothing on their Facebook page, and you had to drill down to their hours of operation page that was apparently updated today. Guess Alterra figures they gave us enough value for our Epic passes.

Come out and join us Sunday, January 30th at Jack Frost for a fun PASR Day. The previous two PASR days at Jack Frost have been extremely fun, including last years knee deep snow. Print out the coupon below for a $30 lift ticket, courtesy of Jack Frost. After skiing, there will be happy hour specials for PASRs including finger food! I'll let someone else plan the logistics of the meet up times, etc, but hopefully everyone can make it.

Ride Boulder from about 930-330 today. I was pleasantly surprised how much fun we had, I thought we would be bored and end up leaving after 2 hours. Snow was nice, easy to carve corduroy, good coverage, and they had 5 trails open on skiers right. Also some beginner stuff and park skiers left, which we didn’t check out. New lift is nice. Place was pretty much empty

Jack Frost was grate. Skied 830-11. Bathrooms suck though, actually had to stand in line to wash my hands. What's up with that? Changing into my street clothes was a hassle. The stalls are so small. This mountain makes me grateful for the big wide open expanse of the Blue Mountain (the True Mountain) snowtubing bathrooms, where space for changing is plentiful.

Placed my bets on JF today and it was just OK... not Grate like on Tuesday. They must have groomed after some snowfall because the snow on the trails was about half as deep (3") as the snow in the parking lot (6").

Got there at 8:00 sharp and immediately hiked the steep hill to the Expert Lift (eastern side) for a nice fresh untracked run down Floyd's. It was grate. Then met up with a friend of a friend, who is now a friend, and we skied an untracked River Shot which was amazing. Those were the only 2 untracked runs really. It got crowded faaaast and by 9:30 there were about 100 people in line. The A-Lift was INOP for the morning which made it exhausting to traverse to the western slopes, which were less crowded and skied just as nice as the X-Pert slopes. We left after 2 hours since the short runs and loooong lift rides started to get boring. Also the snow wasn't deep enough for glades like Happy Land. All in all an OK day at JF, JAD-IP.

Big Boulder is grate... Not! I don't mind the tiny trails at all because the grooming is pristine. The place is set up for total noobs. The annoying lift attendant tells me every single time to "make sure you the bar down and keep your tips up". Yeah buddy, I've been a lift attendant for 2 years and skied all over North America. I know how a ski lift works. Then there's a long line for the only lift with decent terrain and I try to pair up with a group of 3, but am told "this is a kids group only". Da fuq??? Then to ski a decent black diamond I need speed to get back to the only decent lift open, but a bunch of gapers are just standing around in a gaggle at the bottom so I have to slow down and then skate uphill and do work. I have more grievances but am getting to the top for a radical run!!!

Reservations required and being accepted now.

While generally you can only reserve at one Epic Mt per day - a single reservation will be good to ski both JF and BB (as with their interchangable lift tix in past seasons). A positive development as I had read earlier reports that you would have to reserve for one or the other - so this is nice for those who want the better day time skiing at JF and somewhere to continue skiing after 4.

I have seen rumors that BB is not going to have as much of a park focus as before. We shall see.

Saw this on instagram earlier...apparently JFBB has been handing out these cards with ticket purchases? It explains why someone on here had to pay $3 (or whatever it was) on top of the their voucher. I don't think it's right for JFBB to be airing their dirty laundry and making it their customer's problem.

Anyone have any idea what's going on with the lifts at boulder? Was walking the dog earlier around the base and it looks like every one has had at least some chairs pulled off (except Merry Widdows). Seems like they might be reducing the number of chairs and re-spacing what remains. Also looks like black forrest lift is at the end of its life, the cable was pulled off the towers and strewn in the parking lot and its counterweight was cut loose. Any rumors if loose chairs might go up for sale, figure they'd make a great porch swing.

The Denver Post had a story queued up on embargo this morning when Vail decided to delay their announcement by one day due to the shooting nearby. This story was cached by Google, and while the full cache has been removed, Google still displays the summary in the search results and I consider that to be confirmed as to the basic facts, but the full text of the article was only recoverable from a Reddit thread and cannot be confirmed in it's entirety. The full story appears below this introduction.

This article claims that Vail Resorts is reducing the price of the full Epic Pass by $196, and the Epic Local Pass by $146. That's significant. The full Epic Pass will start off at $783, and the Epic Local Pass will start at $583.

What this story doesn't detail however is the company's direction when it comes to regional pass products such as the Northeast Value Pass and the Northeast Weekday Value Pass. The price cut makes the Epic Local Pass cheaper than the Northeast Value Pass was last season, but not the Northeast Weekday Value Pass. If that pass was eliminated, a number of Northeast passholders on the weekday pass product would actually end up paying more, though overall most Epic Pass holders would be paying less.

This move by Vail continues two main strategies; 1) sell on value, and 2) lock as many people in as possible on passes. The obvious question though is whether people will want to go ski at a resort that looks like a Walmart at midnight on Black Friday. Surely a record number of people will next season at least.

Epic Pass Price Slashed 20% for 2021-2022 Ski Season

The duel between ski industry titans over season pass sales took a stunning turn Tuesday when Vail Resorts announced that prices for next season’s Epic Passes will be 20% lower than what it charged for those passes this season.

The Epic Pass for next season, which goes on sale Tuesday, is priced at $783. That’s $196 less than the 2020-21 Epic Pass when it went on sale a year ago, and $216 less than rival Ikon Pass is charging for a comparable 2021-22 season pass. Ikon announced its 2021-22 prices on March 11.

The more limited Epic Local Pass is priced at $583, which is $146 lower than last year’s price of $729. Ikon is charging $729 for its comparable 2021-22 product, the Ikon Base Pass.

Both Vail Resorts and rival Alterra Mountain Co. (Ikon Pass) are headquartered in metro Denver, and there was no immediate response from Alterra to Vail’s escalation in the season pass wars. Epic passes haven’t been this cheap since the 2015-16 season, when the Epic Pass was good at only 11 U.S resorts. Now it’s good at six resorts in Colorado alone, and more than 70 destinations around the world.

“The main driver here is, we want to move ticket buyers to a pass,” Vail Resorts chief executive Rob Katz said in an interview. “That has been a strategy of ours going all the way back to the introduction of the Epic Pass back in 2008. We’ve made huge inroads on this front. We started looking at some of our learning over the last couple years, and we thought we could actually reduce the price, bring more people into the program, and actually have it be profitable and a good decision for the company.”

Katz said Epic Pass sales for the 2020-21 season were strong, helping the company withstand the challenges that came with COVID-19 capacity restrictions and the reservations system it employed to control numbers on its mountains. That helped drive the price cut for next season’s passes.

“We’re not cutting the price of a lift ticket,” Katz said. “We’re cutting the price of a pass, which means you have to buy it before the season. That, we believe, is the crux of how you ensure stability and economic prosperity for the entire skiing and riding ecosystem.

Katz said Vail Resorts sold 1.4 million Epic Passes for this season. That meant lots of money in the bank before the first snowflake fell. That triggered us to say, ‘We’re doubling down on this strategy,’ Katz said. “We think skiers and riders can be the beneficiaries. It’s actually making a great trade with our guests to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to keep providing you more and more value to help us make this business and this industry more successful.'”

Vail Resorts business declined this season because of the pandemic, which included operating lifts at 50% capacity or less. Katz sent a letter to pass holders last week, saying the company does not plan to use a reservations system next season.

“Obviously this year was not as good as previous years,” Katz said. “But given the environment that we were operating in, and all the challenges that we all faced around COVID, we feel like this year has been absolutely successful. I think it’s been due to a few things. One is pass sales, which was very strong going into this year.”

Epic passes are good at all resorts owned by Vail Resorts as well as “partner” resorts owned by other companies. Those destinations include Telluride, Sun Valley in Idaho and Snowbasin in Utah. Ikon Passes are good at Alterra mountains, including Winter Park and Steamboat in Colorado, as well as partner resorts that include Aspen Snowmass, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin and Eldora.
