  1. It looks like about half of the lazy river is filled in and the pile of snow over by ski school is higher than the pump house for the water slide. The piles of snow on whistler are at least 15 feet high also. Even after 4 years, I am still amazed at Sno's ability to lay down the white stuff.....

  2. My wife and kids went up this past week, they had a ball and are definitly going again. They have a repeat pass. You can buy a return pass for $17.00. We are also thinking about buying a familt pass, they will have to go 9 times to make it worth it. We have a busy summer already so we are trying to figure out if it would be worth it.

  3. Elk

Pros: Long blacks, good atmosphere, good snow, great tree runs on snow days

Cons: Expensive, farther drive, hardly any lights, bad park, in the middle of nowhere

    Sno

Pros: North Face, 2 big parks, right outside of Scranton, no lines, snow stays good all day,

Cons: Slow lifts, steep trails are not as long.

Shif, come to sno on a snow day, we won't see a trail all day long. Sno has excellent tree skiing if you know where to look. My main reason to ski sno/ montage is its location. Elk is another 45 minutes, tough drive if you have a couple of beers. also you have Scranton and Wilkes Barre afterwards for some good night life. No such thing at Elk, they have a couple of bars but not the clubs that the 2 cities have, not that I have been out much since my kids were born. And I really think the snow quality is much better since the installation of sno's new 8 million snow making system.

  4. Where was this at, Sno??

I didn't even hear about this .. thought you were talking about the Stegmaier/Lion Brewery one until I noticed the date on the post.

I was at Sno last Saturday. I would have changed only 2 things. I would change the pick of bands, they have metal bands instead of some german bands and the should have had a grill outside cooking the bratwurst. But other than that I had a real good time.

  5. He will be doing the program at JFBB. Right now he has a pair of skis that he has already used 2 seasons. He has gone about 20 days each year and I have only gotten them tuned/sharpened in the middle and end of the season. If he wasn't joining the race program I would not be buying him new skis, but I guess he really needs them. Since I am getting him new skis, should I be getting race skis or just another pair of all around skis?

I will probably take shifdawgs advice and get him a much better pair of boots, either rental or purchase. Thanks for the help, Sib.

Barb, I have 2 sons and feel your pain as far as getting equipment goes. I relly think you don't need to consider "race" skis or boots. Kids really don't develop the angles at this age. Besides all the skis are basically the same with different graphics. I would contact the ski team or race director to put you in contact with some other race parents to see if they have any skis or boots. I buy boots for my kids because I was renting for $40-$50 a year and you could buy a pair for less than $100 and each one of my kids will get a year out of each boot. Be careful that you don't get the boots too big otherwise his skiig will really suffer. If the team dosen't pan out, eBay is a great place to get equipment cheap.

  6. Right on!!!!

Considering I don't even have a girlfriend..I don't have to worry about being whipped..

I never had a serious girlfriend after I turned 21. Not being tied down and going where I wanted when I wanted was the best. The only serious gf I ever had taught me everything I didn't want in a spouse. I did not meet my wife until I was almost 29. I had a rule, a gf had to last 2 ski seasons. Since my winter job is skiing, the first year was always great, it was the second season was the real test. well my wife was so good through 2 I change my rule to 3 seasons. Well after 3 ski seasons and we were still together and more importantly skiing together, I just had to marry her b/c i really believed i was not going to get any better. And I was right, I am very happily married with 2 wonderful kids and a really good life. My single friends do less than me and when we do do things like golf, the get more grief then me.

  7. If I had a wife that wouldn't let me go skiing out west every season..I'd kill her!!!!

GSS, choose your words very carefully. I have about 10-12 friends who skied with me 90 days a year, now they don't even own skis. I know some guys who talked like you and now they have to ask to take a shit there so whipped.....

Money is the real issue, this is the first year my wife is not working so we have to see how our businesses work out in relationship to our bills for the year.

Also the kids are not ready to ski out west yet, close, but not yet.

We are planning to go to Tahoe in March 2010

  8. Would love to, but I think my wife would kill me if I went out west again. '08-9days, '07-8 days '06- 9 days, '05- 11 days. She said if I go again she is filing for divorce.....

We are thinking about taking our 2 boys to whiteface around the middle of march.

The Scranton Ski/drinking Club use to go every St. Patrick's day weekend. We went about 7 years in a row. The trip just fell apart b/c we all started having kids. So some of the old guard are thinking about starting the trip up again since all our kid are starting to ski better than their parents.

  9. Sno Mountain usually has bumps on the bottom of the mountain. Not the longest there is but decent. I think the best bet for you would be Tunkhannock at Elk.

I agree here, Sno's bumps on white lighting are good and they usually let the right side of boomer to bump up. A good thing last year was that the blew a lot of snow on the bumps on thurs and fri nights so sat mornings are real good.

But as good as Sno's bumps are, Elk on the Tunkhannock and Lackawanna are far better and way longer.

  10. I would like to add: all the trails have lights! :wiggle

I agree though, sno is doing alot to improve the mountain and I think this year is going to be a good one for them. 550 is not that bad if u go enough, and for all of us who live in Scranton, it is so much more convenient than to driving to elk, especially when the roads suck. (and all the trails have lights)

    :yes:yes:yes:yes:yes

  11. Adult - $550 early rate - for only sno mtn.

    hardy har har har

    O.k $650.00 for Elk ????

    Sno $550, Closer, less gas,

8 million dollar snowmaking system with 200 snow guns, Better coverage and quicker recovery from thaw cycles,

    White lighting, excellent steep trail

Can order more than 2 beers at the bar at one time

    All new rentals

    new food area

IDK seems like a deal to me considering I bought my first pass in 1988 and paid $350 early bird. The price is way less than double in 20 years????

What more do you want plus there are many other pass options to ski and not spend $550.

  12. I'm looking at some head boots for my son because they seem to have some of the best boots out there for people with a forefoot width over 98cm

The ski shop I normally goto doesn't carry head products = (

I will look into finding a shop for you........

  13. i've heard nothing but bad things about foam injection liners actually. i guess it totally depends on how much/how hard you're skiing. at a high racing level, i can see where they're beneficial, in that you get a perfectly custom fit, but in a recreational level where you're realistically going to have a pair of boots for several years, i feel like they'd pack out beyond the point of being useful. whenever i get new boots, i go slightly tighter than what's comfortable sitting on the bootfitting bench, because 10 to 15 days down the road, they pack out and end up being pretty spot on. if you're lucky enough to be able to afford new boots often enough that packing out is not an issue, then i'm jealous, but even working at a shop with access to all sorts of tools and equipment whenever i need it, i still prefer a hand-sewn liner.

p.s. lange's banshee boot for next season is the best boot i've skied in thus far. if it fits your foot, check it out.

I totally agree with you also on the off the shelf boot fit, tighter is better, but not to an exterme.

I was foamed 2 years ago. I ski 65-75 days a year. I ski pretty aggressively, I race 2 nights a week and ski bumps as much as I can. I have some issues with my feet as far as width / length relationship and some bone spurs. Also in my research is that the new foam does not

  14. a lot of factors come into play besides just the shape of your foot. for example, someone that doesn't have great range of motion in their ankle will often times be more comfortable in a stiffer boot, because if they are putting pressure on the boot to flex, and it has enough pressure to flex more than their ankle is accustomed to, that can be uncomfortable. in my case, the opposite is true. i'm a strong skier, and very aggressive, but like a softer boot because i have a very flexible ankle, and the softer boot allows my ankle to flex as it naturally wants to. if you're fine with the flex of your boot, as in, you don't get ankle, heel, or shin pain from overflexing and bottoming out the boot, then i'd say its not too soft. if you do run into problems where on difficult terrain, you find yourself bottoming out the boot and causing discomfort, maybe you do need something stiffer. as far as the toe box, you should still be able to stretch/grind it a bit more to alleviate the issue. also, if you don't have any kind of aftermarket footbed in your boots, you might want to look into a pair of those, as they're bring the inside of your foot off the boot a little bit and get your knee/ankle/foot back into alignment.

Right on Justo. I feel the same way, I ski Head S12 with a flex 8.6-9.6. I cut the cuff and took the flex screws out of the back so I could flex it more. You have to understand that the ankle is the most important joint in the body for balance. If you cannot flex your ankle, your balance will be off. Like Mr Miagi says balance good skiing good, balance bad skiing kaput....

As far as fit goes, the best investment I ever made was a fully foamed liner and custom orthotics. But make sure you have it done by a excellent, reputable boot fitter. Not some clown in a local shop. Canting and alignment is the next best investment. If you are on a flat ski and your lower leg is aligned, you will be able to ski better and longer because your muscles will not fatigue from trying to balance yourself.

I had my boots done about 3-4 different times. Bill Kaplan set me up 2 years ago and really did the best job I had done in years. I realley believe that a good fit, being canted and aligned, can really bring your skiing to the next level.

Bill is in the Langhorn area, PM me if anybody wants his number.

  15. Was up the mt this afternoon. The north face lift was running. a lot of equipment around but no workers visable. the towers are in for the zip rider. you can see the structure where the wave pool is supposed to be but the pool part is non existent. There are some type slide being built near the shuttle lift. the lazy river still has dirt all the way around the permiter. They did install a very nice set steps from the parking lot to the main entrance.

They do seem like they are a long way from opening, I hope not, but I really don't see it.

  16. I was at Sno yesterday, they have a lot of activity going on but it seems opening is not in the near future. The Zip Rider poles are in, I was walking near the shuttle lift and the pumps are installed for the lazy river and concrete for a slide in and they were stripping the forms. There was a lot of work being done over where the wave pool is supposed to be. Also a new set of stairs are being installed and a 6' vinyl fence was installed around the parking lot.

I got my hands on some pic from the last snow at Sno. the pic were taken 5/29/08. I can't figure out how to post them though.

  17. We used to do this back in the late 80's in jenkins down by the 8th street bridge. We had 200cm Dynastar Coupe DeMondes. They didn't turn as well as the big feet these guy had on. We had to do more of a hop turn and ride the bottom of the turn out. Still looks like fun, brings back a lot of memories.

  18. Well i'm back and what a week, simply unbelievable. The skiers in the tryout, the snow, the other people I got to ski with, seeing old friends, just awesome. BTW, the blue skiers should be stoked, Eric Lipton ski instructor from blue made the national team. Big props to him and the ski school staff at blue to have one of the 15 best skiers and teachers in the whole country. Great job. :bravo

I will have pics when I catch up with my businesses and all the work I missed, hopfully soon.

  19. sean jordan is headed out soon also - he is leaving may 4th. If you are still there Check out the Salomon Jib Academy Finals, Sean from Sno Mountain and stands a good chance to win the whole thing.

I will be there until may 4th and then heading up to squaw til may 6. I'll see if I can stay to see some of the comp.

Mammoth's base is 4-6 feet with lows in the 20's and highs in the high 50's low 60's.

  20. I was driving on the other side of the valley today and noticed that you can see alot of bare areas on the mountain but the pipe still looks like the day it was built back in Jan.

So I was wondering when you do the PASR's think all the snow will be melted from the half pipe.

I say the end of july, I'll pick my birthday July 26th.

Remember, no snow visiable at all.
