  1. Gotta agree.

Getting rid of 'Checkpoint Charlie' up top was a huge improvement, too. If it's the new RFID tags that made that possible, then they were worth it.

There are some other things being done this year that aren't noticeable to the "seasoned skier". One of them is called the roving instructor program. Doesn't matter to any of us on PASR, but will make a big difference to some first timers. Basically, the ski school, oops, "Learning Center", sends an instructor out on Vista and Burma with some free lesson vouchers. They are looking for the noobs who can't ski 10' w/o falling down and offering a little assistance, as well as a first time lesson voucher.

I have spoken with some of the instructors who've done this and the reaction by the customers has been extremely positive.

Anyway, props to Blue for making an effort to grow the sport.

  2. XNick don't show up at 11AM during the Holiday week....I can't wait for New Years morning..usually empty till the Jibhonks start rolling in..

I think crowds through New Years will be worse than a normal holiday because it was empty Sunday and Monday was closed a good chunk of the day...most goobs wanna get out one day during the Xmas holiday maybe MLK day and one day in Feb.///Living the dream...

    This ^ quoted for truth.

We were there today and 15+ minute waits at the six pack and quad both, were common. And from what I can tell, the new ticket systems has noting to do with that. I did see several six pack chairs going up with less than 6 people, sometimes only three. Especially in the morning when Razors was closed for race training (lots of racers going up on less than full chairs).

For as long as the wait lines were, the trails were relatively crowd free (stay off Paradise and Lazy). Made a few laps on the double-double side and waits there were tolerable.

We left around 3:30 and conditions really were staying in good shape.

  3. Hahahahaha...ok, we're going. TR later.

    Anyone else gonna be there?

I'll be there. Up top will be crunchy in the morning, likely. Tonight, it was below freezing up top, based on the ice observed on trees my last lift ride up. But forecast for afternoon says going up to 45, so going to end up soft. Sure was wet there today.

  4. Wasn't bad up until noon. After that, all the crowd had finally made their way thru the rental shop and hit the slopes. I left Summit area around 2:30 and there were no spots available. Cars were parked almost all the way down to the Blue Mountain Drive entrance.

  5. Swix is selling a "lint-free paper towel" that they want you to put between the wax iron & the ski base on the last pass that you make when you are hot waxing. They claim that it makes hot waxing easier. Is there anyone out there that is doing this? If so, what's your opinion re: the claimed ease & the performance of the wax job?

    Thanks!

Sibhusky has it right. Using the Fiberlene paper makes scraping easier. That's not a big deal until you start using the harder waxes, like Toko Blue. But, don't need them much here. The only other thing it does is protect your bases from direct contact with a hot iron. But,crayoning does, as well. I always crayon a layer on first, even if I follow up with dripping some wax on. Sometimes I use the Fiberlene, sometimes I don't.

  6. Looks like the lights may finally be on at Camelback. A little hard to tell for sure, because the web cam is zoomed in on the trail map at the base. But before it was in the dark, now it's not.

  8. I'm guessing this means that there are none around here?

You should have left your skis with Lionel at Happy Tunes.

Ask PhilPug on AlpineZone who he recommends for someone closer.

  9. Thanks. I hope my work schedule lets me do it next year.

maybe about a third or so of the maybe 20-22 people who started out wear protective gear. I was a little nervous the first night booting up watching the guy next to me put on his spine protector! After a week or 2 of getting beat up i got some pole guards. i be lying if i said i didn't get a few bumps and bruises on the shins and arms. figure i'd add a piece of gear or two each year as i get more aggressive, next will be some better padded gloves as my hands seem to be taking the most punishment attempting to block

It is mostly slalom training. The hill we train on, Raceway, is not really wide or steep enough to train GS on. Also, even when they try a GS set it is with breakaway poles. If you are at all aggressive I would minimally uses pole guards as mbike mentioned. Shin guards are also a big help. I do have a chin guard as well but didn't use it for the Tuesday night stuff mostly because I was always running late and never had time to attach it to my helmet.

It is a VERY laid back format. You can get as much or as little coaching as you want. Some of us just ran the gates while others went off to do drills. It's pretty much up to you what you do.

I would highly recomend this program!

  10. It was a blast and i definately plan on doing it again next year. first few weeks did more drills than worked our way to more and more gates. sets were mostly slaloms with a few gilalolams (between a gs and a slalolm) thrown in, full gates with some stubbies here and there to mark turn initiation/fall line position on the set. coaches were very helpful and the group was a great bunch of guys ( and gals). pretty laid back structure and just alot of fun. alot of folks do this every year, i think one guy was in his 7th session.

Did everyone have slalom armor (shin guards, pole guards, chin guards)? Or just the more serious ones?

  11. There are a couple of us interested in doing the Blue race clinic next year. Can you describe the kinds of things you did this year over the course of the clinic?

    - drills?

    - run brushies or stubbies?

    - full gates?

    - slalom or gs sets? Or both?

    -other?

  12. Just wanted to make this the top thread. I know not as many elk skiers/riders on this board as the other mountains but how many people are planning on hitting the slopes this weekend? (or if local tomorrow?) with all the snowmaking last week and some more hopefully to continue they should have a good amount of terrain opening shortly, much more than their normal early season stuff

I'm probably gonna hit Camelback on Saturday. After Elk gets a decent amount of terrain open I'll be heading there.

  13. Daily Conditions

Camelback Mountain Resort is thrilled to announce that it will begin making snow tonight, November 17, 2008. Coupled with one of the more favorable forecasts in recent years, Camelback's newly upgraded snowmaking system will have terrain available this weekend should temperatures hold. This milestone will mark Camelback's earliest opening in its near fifty year history.

  14. My foot is really narrow that is why I needed the 95 last. I may end up with some boot heaters if it gets unbearable on the really cold days.

I have the Dobermann Pro 130's and they haven't been as cold as I was prepared for. But, my liners are a bit beefier than yours.

A big help will be having the boots warm before you even put them on. And you can then use a "bootglove" to help hold that heat in while you ski. They do make heated boot bags, but they are kind of expensive. A cheap route is to get some of those corn bags you heat up in the microwave. Throw them inside the boot shells (liners out) while you drive to the hill. Presto, toasty warm shells.

  15. I actually tried on the Doberman Aggressor WC 130 this weekend and that fit better. That boot as well has the abducted stance as well but from what I understand Nordica's offset is measured from the heel. I will be picking the boots up when I got to Vermont this coming weekend.

That's a nice boot. How wide are your feet? It's going to take some punching and grinding unless you have really narrow feet. They're going to be a bit on the cold side, too.
