  1. Hey guys, I was the park guy at shawnee about two years back and now im finishing shool next fall in Killington VT (Green Mountain College). While being at school I was able to get money to build some jibs and even started up a new program called the "Jib Yard". The jib yard gives students the chance to shred (yea and ski) after the mountain closes at four. Its actually in the front yard of the housing building called the lodge. I just finished a video on MM (so the quality kinda sucks) tell me what you think.

  2. I think Killington (if open) will be brutally crowded, and certaintly less terrain. Also only one lift most likely, where as at Mount Snow you have 3. I wouldn't be suprised if they had deer run or snowdance open. If killington gets a window to make more snow, so will Mount Snow, and Mount Snow has a lot more terrain under full fan gun coverage to open. Once they max out that terrain they will go back to the slower air/water guns and Killington will be opening stuff faster since they have more water, but while it is fan guns vs old style, Mount Snow is going to win.

Plus, you have all season to go to killington if you have a house, try something different for a weekend when you know it will be superior.

Strongly dissagree... Hit up K-town this weekend. Employee passes are not valid friday-sunday. Especially take into account that most jobs have not started, but a ton of people who already went through orientation with the mountain already have their passes. Killington has excellent snow coverage at the moment and yes my boys from GMC were at MT. Snow and told me it was kick ass, but we will be open top to bottom with a park. The entire northridge side has a massive amount of snow coverage so trails like rime, reason, double dipper, Great Northern, East fall will be ready to go. Also a bunch of trails like bunny buster and mouse trap on Snowdon will be open.

Here it is fresh from the web-site:

    Report News:

Snowmaking has been underway on 19 trails as we gear up for opening day on November 16. We'll be skiing and riding off Killington and Snowdon peaks. We'll update you with a projected trail and lift count later this week as we approach opening day. Check out the new filtering functionality of the snow report by clicking on "Trail Report" below.

Our Park and Pipe Crew is welding, grinding and painting new features that will debut opening day at our early-season terrain park on Reason.

The first event of the season - the Loaded Turkey Rail Jam 4 2/3 - takes place on Sunday, Nov. 18.

Killington will offer Blue Square and Black Diamond Trails only, and all skier/rider services will be available at the K-1 Lodge.

MT snow has 12 trails in operation now.

  3. Already after being in school my second year at GMC, Powdr means business. Pure and simple. A resort the size of Killington will make money no matter if they open first, second, third, or fourth. Because of environmental impacts and the decreased skier visits in recent years, Killington wants to focus more on the customer

  4. every park gets run down...

No Park should ever get run down. No potential guests should see a park when its "down." Professionalism comes above eveything. You never know who rides through your final product. I think what you meant to say was that snow melts... but thats when you put in overnight hours and revamp a few features at a time. Get the job done.

  5. Keith,

ANy idea of who is running the show over there now? I heard snow planet was being hired to get them started, but who is maintaining after the initial set-up?

I'm almost positive Mark (the assistant under Shaun) is heading day to day operations for parks this year. They are already in the shop preparing features... haven't heard a word about Planet. I'll keep digging.

Yea i was right Mark is running the show... http://media.intrawest.com/mountaincreek/i...iblab_large.jpg

  6. Too bad for everyone... I'm the new RA for next year :snowpee:

Oh yea and one more thing... I start construction on the lodge's stair set tomorrow. I think you guys are going to have a blast. Pics will be posted dont worry.

  7. Well I do go to college and I am earing a Resort and Hospitality Degree... from an Environmental Liberal Arts school... In Killington VT. :halo And K2 is absoultly right. There a major factors at play that day to day skiers can't even fathom. Powdr Corp and SP land will do a great job... Regarding the interconnect (pico/killy) they have been paying $5mil a year in land development permits to complete the project, but we all know ASC ( ) Here is some more helpful info...

    Killington sale CLOSES! Thank God!

  8. I didnt like that box at all, and i dont like sucking hard things to get down at all.

...weird choice of words, but anyway... Its good to experiment with new setups, you can gather opinions and adapt to peoples preferences. That is how parks have progressed and continue to make newer, fresher standards.

  9. Whaaat. They reported 100 trails open today from 167 or so yesterday. 67 down in one night? Not complaining though, all the parks are open.

i do work park crew here in ktown. the main park has some 25-30' jumps, other trails on bear have some 40'+. park has 7 new features, flows great. snowmelt is a problem.

  10. Anyone been up to Killington recently? I'm going over break (first week in April). They still have a bunch of trails open but it doesnt look like alot of coverage. Any park reports? Their pipe looks a little sloppy too.

We took a beating this week with all the rain... coverage is deminishing quick, as for parks we still have some tricks up our sleeve. Should be sweet :naughty

  11. ^are you keith? just wondering

different people have different definitions of what "half assed" is.

yea thats me. "half assed" - Not performing in a job to full strength or ability, do to lazyness. (Basically my whole Highschool GPA :rofl )

  12. awww stevo, thats cute. memories

I don't like to settle on anything, or do anything half assed. I see a potental at shawnee for growth, development, and improvement with their parks. Who knows what could happen in two years.

  13. Just a little attempt to try and explain a few things. First off, it is impossible to make up for the lost revenue from the beginnig of the season. The vacationers that were coming for Christmas (who account for a LARGE portion of revenue) aren't here and they're not coming anymore this season. Every financial decision at a ski resort, just like any other business, is based on ROI- Return On Investment. If we were to light up the mountain now for three days and spend a hypothetical $15,000 on energy costs, that $15,000 would have to show some sort of monetary return , which at this point in the season is not likely to happen. Think of the snow on the ground as if it were money. If a ski resort closes April 1, which most in the Poconos do, and there is three feet of snow on every trail, that is basically money laying on the trail. An ideal situation would be to close April 1 and have all the snow melt on April 2, which means that you made the exact right amout of snow for the season. Some larger ski areas with large real estate holdings don't have to worry so much about earnings from ski resort operations because it is more of an amenity for their real estate owners. They make the bulk of their money from these real estate transactions. However, stand alone ski area like Shawnee and others, really have to watch operational costs and expeditures in order to stay alive. The only way to try and negate the affect of the early season lost revenue is to cut costs and watch expenses.

    Adam your so smart

  14. i think they were open 100% this time last year

    idk i might be wrong

They were this time last year... guys you need to think buisness. Most resorts (even Killington) only maintain snowmaking operations until presidents weekend because they rent extra compressors during the good well... "typically" good snowmaking months. At this point in time during the season with skier visits deminishing, its not wise to keep spending thousands of dollars in snowmaking. Its buckle down and ride with what you got. Considering how bad this year has been, you need to give all of the resorts a break. There is always next year (hopefully  )

  15. Hey parkbuilder - whats the word on the street up there about Killington being sold?

And I'm assuming you say you liked Shawnee better because you had a hell of a lot more control over it - I remember going end of the season (last weekend maybe?) last year and having so much fun in that park despite how fast the snow was melting, you had it going off. The up box to flat-down box was perfect.

control plays a big part for sure... it was my dream job, but im up here for a reson and im greatful. The word is that the mountain was already sold, we will see after the presidents week.

  16. Now that american ski company has finally sold Mount Snow, what should we expect from peak resorts. ASC has basically ignored Mount Snow in Vermont. We have seen very little in the way of improvements. The lifts are old and the snowmaking sucks. Mount Snow is close to getting finaly approval for access to Somerset Resorvoir which would give them unlimited water to make snow. Will Peak Resorts spend the money to build the pipleline and add additional snowmaking? How does Peak Resorts keep their other mountains, do they put money into their properties. It seems like they did a good job with crotched in New Hamphire. Looks like Mount Snow will be their flagship resort.

I can only hope ASC gets rid of killy, if it hasnt happened all ready. ASC blows

  17. After working up here with the Killington parks, I want my old job back lol... basically one year under the belt with two more to go.

Adam hears your thoughts guys, and if he lost two full time guys its really hard to maintain a park with a single guy... damn near impossible when your trying to run a whole resort. Please make sure you keep your thoughts and opinions respectful and place your input on everything, the best thing a park a manager has is the input of the public. We build for you! As for the pipe... I would like my old job back in a few years, so no comment haha :sprint:halo
