  1. ok, so now I need to pick some brains, anyone who knows and is familiar with elevation and how it effects you. If we stay at Flagstaff elevation 7000 feet couple of days, how long does it take your body to get used to the elevation? I really want to go to the top of Mt Humphreys- elevation 12,600 feet. Would staying in Flagstaff couple of days help with altitude adjustment? Last year we stayed in Phoenix- elevation 1,100 feet. Drove up to hike Bill Williams Trail outside Flagstaff. Hiked around 2 hours, then my legs felt like lead. My son pointed out that we were around 9000 feet. Duh... oh yeah. I guess my question is, if we stay in Flagstaff 3-4 days, would it be easier to go to the top of Mt Humphreys?

Depends on what you mean by effects.  The pure lack of oxygen while exerting yourself is going to take it's toll on you.  There are people that move to a higher elevation and it can take them 6 - 9 months to get fully acclimated.  The best advice is to drink lots of water (an extra liter per day at minimum) at least 1-week prior to your trip and continue to consume while on vacation.  As Barb said, on the hike just take your time and take lots of breaks.

  2. Costa for Colorado trip.

Airfare: southwest airlines look at about $300

    Baggage: free

    Parking: $120'

    Rental car $370

Hotel $600 for 7 nights..at 2.75 star on the Kelvin scale.

Tips..not just the tip. $3 each for car rental shuttle peeps and parking spot peeps.

Lift tickets $159 2- day at Abasin..yeah I know a spring season pass is $210 or some shit. Loveland $65 and $53..and copper $79 and $69..we at $430 total lift tickets for 6 Days so $1800+ for all the expenses plus eating and Drinking but free coffee and free breakfast. But all worth it when locals are like who's that guy??? And they aren't referring to the bowling scene from grease 2. If you split rental car and hotel room also save some Johnny Cash but be forewarned farting is immense above 9,000 feet

I didn't think Jews tipped?  :dunno

  3. ABasin is going off!!!attachicon.gifimage.jpeg

I heard that the east wall was skiing pretty incredible last week.  We went to Loveland with my sister-in-law Friday and unfortunately she's not that strong of a skier.  We took several runs with her on some of the ungroomed blues and then when she puckered out, we went up and hit some of the steeper stuff and a few tree runs.  Snow was great and we had a blast.  Wanted to stay longer but we had family obligations back down in Denver.  This weekend should be good with some more snow coming mid week.

  4. Killington will probably make May and ABasin prob June.

I'm actually happy camelback isn't open cause I've gone three years without skiing there and now will be at least four.

ABasin projected closing is June 5th, but they will stretch it as long as they can.  When I moved out here last summer we missed it by 1 week and we got here July 3rd.  They've received 28" in the last week so that should definitely help things.

  5. Where you going we should meet up and talk about the Killy/PICO interconnect

A Basin or Breck ... would love to get to Vail but have family in town and they close Vail pass too much. Don't want to risk getting stuck out there.

I've moved on to bigger and better ... starting to think about why there's no Crested Butte/Aspen interconnect.

    Denver airport is shutdown

I dropped my wife off at the airport last night .. the winds were incredible.  I heard they were running on generators most of today when they were open.

  6. That could help Barb by raising real estate values.

This last weekend was a holiday weekend???

Yes, more like a holiday week ... Easter break out here started last weekend and continues through next.

Kragan why no pics? Step it up. Hope you enjoyed yourself. How did you like the Monarch Mountain Lodge?

The Lodge was decent. Only spent one night there, but the breakfast was good and it had more amenities than I expected.

  7. Yes in town, not Mt. Crested Butte.

Just spent the weekend down there.  Considering it was a holiday weekend the mountain never got too crowded.  It's a great little town and the real estate is still somewhat affordable.  I wonder if the expanding direct flights to Gunnison are going to change that.

  8. When I used to work in CC Philly, there were so many good options for lunch.  I guess I wouldn't call them fast food, but lots of take-out/delis/restaurants/etc. within walking distance.  I ate lunch out everyday and the wife and I went out to dinner at least 2-3 times a week, but we lived in the city and walking to a restaurant was more convenient than grocery shopping.

Now that I work from home, I never eat lunch out and grocery shopping is much more convenient when you don't live in the city.  We cook at home and eat dinner out maybe once a week. However, the food out here is NO WHERE as good as it was in Philly, so I don't have the urge to eat out as much.

  9. I love hearing stories about companies actually being nice to their customers. I stayed at the Monarch Mountain Lodge recently to ski Monarch Mountain. I booked 2 nights but after one night my kids were calling and texting with some crap that forced me to come home. I just told the desk I was leaving early to take care of some "kid drama." I would not have asked for any kind of compensation. They refunded me my second night stay. I left them a nice review on Tripadvisor. It is an older hotel but they seem to be trying really hard to stand out.

Glad to hear that.  The wife and I are staying there on 3/20 and skiing Monarch 3/21.  I read mixed reviews about the Lodge, but we didn't feel like staying down in Salida as we will be coming from CB.

  10. Sorry didn't see this. If you're looking for slope side, you could try the alpine village suites. I prefer in town since it's an easy drive though. I've stayed at the Wyndham world mark and kachina lodge recently. Kachina lodge was super cheap and kind of run down but not terrible. There's the snow mansion hostel in arroyo seco. The sagebrush inn is popular but I've never stayed there.

Mountain knowledge I could go on forever, but try all the steeps off of lift 2. Hike both ridges. Don't overlook the "Bambi ridge" where you can find sir Arnold Lynn, the Bambi chutes and Lorelei. Also the what chutes if you're into crazy shit. Go into hunziker bowl, but keep traversing even beyond where it seems like it makes sense and go into high noon bowl and el Funko. If the snows good you'll be rewarded. Don't miss longhorn and North American if it's open. If you ski longhorn tell anybody bragging about Al's run that they are a pussy. Much longer and steeper.

Thanks, NMSKI.  We are looking to go the 1st or 2nd weekend in March and are pretty much going to head where ever the snow is best.  If there's good snow south of us, Taos is where we will end up.

  11. Might head to Taos in a few weeks if conditions improve since my brother is not coming out now.  NMSKI, I'd appreciate any pointers you have as far as lodging goes, options don't seem too plentiful.  Also, any mountain knowledge would be great.

  12. Very nice,  Their Cat skiing is supposed to be incredible, but it's a bit pricey at $350/day.

I'll be heading there at the end of March ... 2 days at CB and 1 at Monarch.  I didn't know about that $40 deal but I got a 3-pack of tix for $100 at Christy's PowderDaze.

  13. Three highlights on this trip:

    1) Showing Toast around for 4 days

    2) Only telling GSS to STFU up twice

    3) Skiing the best run of my life.

I love JH, and having Toast out here for his second trip many years removed was great.  I wish more PASRs skied this awesome mountain.  Even non powder days are awesome here.  It's amazing how steep the groomers are here.  Day 9 in the books...back to the rat race tomorrow.  16 more work days (with a trip to Germany in between) until I'm in CO for 14 days ;)

Where in CO? ... and how do you have so many vacation days!?
