  1. Getting back on the original topic...to finish my answer to BDK's question. The polecats at tubing are being sent to Mount Snow...JFBB is getting carriage guns to replace those...which can be used in the places that BDK mentioned. JF put carriages in some unique spots at the end of this season to help out thin spots such as T-Bolt and East Mtn. Next season, JFBB will have more flexability on where to use fans.

TT C6...I found this out in a conversation I had with the mountain manager at BB.

It's wrong to send any of our snowmaking to Mt Snow. Should stay right where it is. Also, clear the rocks out of the area between Challenge and East Mtn where it goes under the East Mtn lift. stick some snow below River Shot so you can ski right down to the river (and walk back up of course!). Lower the price (just some) of some of the cafeteria food. Build a sundeck at the bottom near the two triple lifts.

  2. I don't usually read the Blue board, so sorry for being uninformed. Blue actually agreed to do the Ski Patrol show? That is being shot in season correct? I just want to make sure I have my facts straight before I say anthing.

Yup looks like they filmed for at least a month. They did a reality TV show about their Ski Patrol. I heard it will air in November.

  3. Yup..very sad..The runs at Blue are about as short as I can tolerate..I was at Camelback two days ago and got my fill..I've never liked the place..the rest of my skiing this season looks to be in VT and NY..

But in November when Big Boulder is open earlier than Blue..I'll pay the money to ski there because I'll be feening for skiing so badly..even if though the runs are only 15 seconds long..and the liftrides are 5 minutes..

And if Xanadu is open in late summer/early fall..I'll pay whatever I charge to ski 130 vert..lol

skiied at CB yesterday and it was real nice. Will buy my season pass there next year or sooner!!

  4. If that works for them, then more power to 'em! That perception=reality move cost them multiple thousands of dollars. If I were a season passholder there I would want them to explain why they are wasting money which in turn drives the price of my pass up. My .02 worth.
You do make a good point - however - my .02: I would think that JF would want to engage a long term strategy to both attract future season pass holders, and remain competitive in a difficult, at best - "flat" market. Blowing snow on closing day is just an illustrative example of a long term "perception" issue. Cleaning up the woods so you can ride/ski them without wrecking your equipment is a good thing. Ditto with appealling to a younger market, aggressive group sales etc. JFBB doesn't have big vertical, so it's the "extras" that would seperate JFBB from Sno, Blue, Elk, and others. Thanks,
  5. Well whoever is in charge of that mountain must hate making a profit. Running the guns is super expensive and to turn them on at this point in the year is not only foolish, but really just like pissing in the wind.

"that mountain" makes a hefty profit year after year. Their business people are astute enough to realize that perception = reality in the minds of their customer base. The fact that they had a couple of guns lit up on closing day was simply a calculated business decision that supported a very positive perception.

  6. If Mary still works there..she owes me a free pass..

Went to Blue yesterday afternoon - the blew snow all over and the coverage is great - much more of a base than other mountains. They could easily stay open into April if the $$$ was there

  7. Woke up a little late this morning so I didn't hit the road until just before 8. I actually didn't have a specific plan where to go this morning so I let fate decide. When I got to the 476/80 intersection at white haven I flipped a coin. Heads - camelback; tails - blue and if it landed on the edge - JFBB. Since I'm posting in this forum you have a pretty good idea how the flip turned out. It was tails and I headed south for my first time at Blue Mtn. Through a series of unfortunate events, over which I did not necessarily have control, I actually didn't hit the slopes till about 10. I was pretty bummed not getting there early to try to find some PASRs, but I did keep my eyes open. Didn't end up seeing anyone b/c I figured they left around 10 or 11. Oh - well
  8. What's their incentive..they're closing in two weeks..

the incentive is to provide optimal skiing conditions for customers so that they buy season passes next year - or - at least come back again - in March. I was at "another mountain" on closing and they had the snow guns on nearest the lodge and the parking lot just to show patrons that they would blow at every chance.

  9. this is true. most ski areas in PA don't close because of a lack of snow, they close when the people stop showing up. boulder has enough firepower to blow enough snow to stay open well into may if they wanted to. It just doesen't make economic sense to do so. my guess is JF will close 3/30/08 and BB will close for midweek skiing the same time, and open on weekends through 4/13/08, then of course, there is mayday.

    Jordan

Maybe it doesn't make economic sense for those who think short term only. but November 10th - May 10th. Could you imagine the publicity that a 6 month season in the mid atlantic region would generate? And the impact on future season pass sales? Group Sales? Limit the days open to weekends only, Limit the parks and trails to two or three. And advertise a 6 months season on the Northeast Extension for all to see!

  10. you're right a 6 month ski season is totally unheard of for a mid atlantic ski area. Maybe for places up north like Jay or Wildcat or Tremblant. Could you imagine the publicity if they could actually pull this off? November 10th to May 10th - RAD!!! I'm looking at 1 million vert this year so this would pretty much guarrantee it!!

  11. you mean like a park ranger? as in outside all the time dude. maybe next year i'll try to become one of those national ski patrollers and stay out all season get lots of vert too. i think Jack has some that are not national patrollers but you may as well take the tests and do it right

  12. I know there's a skiing test and 60 hours worth of classroom training...Concussion Ted said it was like taking two college courses..but I think it's worth it for the Commaraderie and the fanny packs..

maybe next year. i wouldnt mind being a member of the National Ski Patrol - those are the dudes that know their stuff.
