Pizza Wedge

Pizza Wedge (2/10)

  1. They usually leave the skiers right on Northface and Upper Face bumped up along with the skiers left on Plunge and Blockbuster, and usually they don't groom Freefall at all, but after they had their powder day on Tuesday they groomed almost 100% of the area. I have a bunch of bogo coupon, so I rarely spend more than $29 per ticket, on holiday weekends if I go I get my ticket from liftopia or iskiny, the advertised w/e rate is $59. I have only skied Belleayre once on a weekend, never again too crowded, same for Hunter and Windham. Saturday was the crowd-est I have ever seen Plattekill, on the holiday weekends the lodge and bar are crowded and occasionally a short lift line on the triple chair. There was never really a lift line Saturday but the chairs were full and the trails had more skiers than usual. The reason I ski at Plattekill and Burke is that I don't like crowds and the majority of my ski days are on weekends, my job doesn't allow me to get out too many days during the week.
  2. Day 6 & 7 at Plattekill this year. Arrived Saturday at 8:30, two buses already there, we were on double chair by 9:00, conditions were fantastic everywhere, light snow the majority of the day probably picked up 1" to 3". Big crowd Saturday for Plattekill, both chairs were full all day but no lift lines, had to wait 6 to 8 chairs once or twice on the double. They had groomed the majority of the mountain on Thursday or Friday, even Freefall was groomed but the bumps built up fast, but were very soft. Hard to say what was the run of the day, Plunge, Freefall, Northstar or Blockbuster. Arrived Sunday at 8:45, on the double chair by 9:15, much warmer than Saturday, light snow overnight 1" to 2", conditions were great all day, decent crowd mid-morning but nowhere near the skiers as Saturday, conditional were just as good if not better than Saturday. Skied over 21,000 vertical Saturday and just over 25,000 Sunday. I'll post some photo's later.
  3. Conditions: MG/PP On lift by 9:15, skied until 4:00, over 29,000 vertical feet. 2nd day at Plattekill this year, holiday weekend, decent crowd for Platty, but not crowded , no lift lines. They were making snow on Lower Face and Upper Plunge. Bumps to Blockbuster was the run of the day, on the skiers left nice soft snow all day. Upper Face to Lower Face and Upper Northface to Lower Northface were fantastic all day, couple of areas got scratched off late in the day. Plattekill is one of the best kept secrets, nice terrain with a consistent pitch, no crowd even on holidays.
  4. I think its a good idea, how many will actually take advantage of the offer? Maybe a couple of the passholders at BC will purchase season passes from Blue next season instead of BC, not sure why they buy a season pass from BC in the 1st place.
  5. Whats the deal with the Long Haul Triple? Can't pass inspection?

    CB 3-18-08

Was Cliffhanger open today? The condition reports says 32 out of 33 trails open, but the Stevenson quad wasn't list as open and if the Stevenson chair isn't open how do access those trails!

    Elk TR 3/18

Took a quick trip to Elk before the rain came. Was on the lift at 9:05, conditions were firm and fast, coverage was good. The place was empty, less than 75 people skiing. The best runs today were Slalom, Tuscarora, Lackawanna, Chippewa & Susquehanna. The lift attended on North Quad said the last day for the season would be this Sunday.
  8. look at this!!!!! how sad!!!!! it must of hurt. http://media.newschoolers.com/uploads/memb...Gaper_crash.wmv
  9. The vertical is 430 feet according to Skilift.org, chair lift is over 2500' long http://www.skilifts.org/install_na1972.htm (American Landmark) They do have snowmaking, currently beleive 5 Areco Supersnow units, decent grooming Pister Bully 260 which is a few years old but in good condtion. For the last 10 years they have been only using 1 trail (intermiate), the have nice variety of trails (two nice expert trails) but they only blow snow on the one trail. During the 70's & 80's it was always 100% open. The people that live in the community now don't appreciate what they have nor the potental money maker they have for there community.
  10. From the Pocono Record http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/.../NEWS/802180315 Arson hits Winona Lakes ski lift By Beth Brelje Pocono Record Writer February 18, 2008 A bizarre act of vandalism spoiled the weekend at Winona Lakes in Marshalls Creek. Someone poured a flammable liquid inside the drive terminal of the ski lift and set it on fire, damaging wires and gears inside. The drive terminal is the large bull wheel that chairs turn around.Winona Lakes has just one chair lift and run for members use only. The association's mountain man was grooming the trail early Saturday in preparation for the biggest snow event of the year there, Ski Fest Weekend. When his headlights hit the chair lift, he noticed the lift was scorched. Ski races and related events were cancelled for the weekend, but a planned banquet went on. "There was a great deal of spirit for the skiers who stayed for the banquet," said Winona Lakes secretary Edith Berenbaum. State police, the fire marshal, Marshalls Creek Fire Company and Bushkill Fire Department inspected the damage to the high- voltage wires inside the chair lift. The fire happened between Friday night and Saturday morning. The lift will have to be inspected this week before it can be known how extensive the damage is. Until then, the lift is closed. "The community is divided about the ski slope. Some say it is too costly, some moved here for it. It was a blow to the community. To me it just divided it more," said community manager Bill Powell. Dues and assessments at Winona Lakes are $900 a year. The arson will likely be covered by insurance. Winona Lakes is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction or the person or people responsible for the fire. Anyone with information should call state police in Swiftwater at (570) 839-7701.

There just padding the open trail total, no matter how you look at it there four ways down on Hunter West not counting Wayout, and only one trail open.

Its a great family place - not a big place but a nice variety of trails, no crowds except MLK & Presidents weekends, good snowmaking & grooming also has a nice new lodge. I started going there 6 years ago, i was looking for a place where you go with the kids, never a problem finding a table at lunch. I'm a skier not sure how good the terrian park is, but that where the kids hang.

My daughter had the day off from school, so I decide to take the day off and take her and a friend to Hunter. On the chair by 9:30. stayed on the front side for the first 8 runs. The day start off sunny but by 1:00 the snow moved in and the wind picked up. Overall conditions were very good, Lower K-27, Claires, Eisenhower & Racer Edge were great, Upper K-27 and White Cloud were a little icy. Only compliant is that the condition report shows Taylors Run on the West side as open and as usual it wasn't. Looks like Annapurna has enough snow on it to be opened.
