I shouldn't have to reserve a time slot as a season pass holder. They can think of other ways to manage crowds.

Remember, JFBB is Vail now.  This is their corporate policy.  Seems insane to impose this on these small mountains.

It seems to be designed to allow pass holders to reserve the big crowd days in advance - let them have first crack at X-mas, MLK, etc....

Then they will control crowds via the regular reservation system.  They haven't announced capacity levels yet.  Nor have they - I don't think - explained the plan for teh lodges.

I'd just reserve every timeslot I might possibly ski in the upcoming 2 or 3 weeks.

You only get 7 priority reservations.  When you use those reservations, you get one back.  And you can make reservations in teh general pool as well.

I think.  It's all very confusing....

  3. Hey all -

My daughter's planning to do a little backpacking before school starts.  Does anyone have any experience with the AT section at blue?

Are there good camping sites if you set out NE from the trailhead?  Is it a ice hike there?  maybe she would go 5-6 miles the first day, 8-10 the next and maybe we would pick them up somewhere after they hike out day three.

Any info on that stretch would be appreciate.  Most curios about suitable camp sites.

    Thanks.

I'm so fucking slow and shitty at DH that there would be a line of people behind me. One of the reason's why I stopped. That, and multiple concussions.

    me too...

Hey, anyone have a dual suspension bike they want to get rid of?  Kind of getting into the sport on the trails around me.

That’s exactly what my friend who sends her kid to catholic school said. She also said kids can’t spread it.  I told her that Dr. Fauci said younger kids don’t spread it as much but kids 10+ years old spread it as much as adults they just don’t get as sick from corona generally.

Where did people get the idea that kids can't spread it? Fox and Friends?

The Allentown school board votes tomorrow on if the school year starts virtually. Based on discussion seems like they will vote for virtual schooling.  Such a divide between democrats and republicans on this. Democrats are more likely to be urban folks and minority as well and female..more cautious about things.  Republicans don’t want the economy slowing down any more.

    very difficult decision.

The 'we need to open the economy' line of thinking is, IMO, faulty.  The virus is killing the economy, not the shutdowns.  FLA and TX are proving this in real time.

assuming you're wearing a helmet (ideally a full face) and a mask underneath it, glasses or goggles, and gloves, i'd think your exposure risk is pretty slow. i'm guessing they're recommending you only ride the lift with someone you came with, and not just allowing random singles to hop on together, but it's blue so who knows. they change their chairlift rules every two weeks for the bike park it seems. don't go inside, keep a little bottle of hand sanitizer in your pocket for emergencies, and keep your gloves on and don't touch your face. i can't imagine the "sweat trail" or whatever they're talking about (exhalation stream?) is gonna be that large and dispersed from someone wearing a full face helmet. you could also just go up on a rainy day when no one's there and any droplets fall out of the air quicker from the high humidity/moisture content, in theory? the biggest risk at blue is always the loose rocks haha

    Here is the quote:

    • Rider spacing of at least 20 meters is encouraged to avoid the “slipstream” of exhalation

All three are in quarantine.  Obviously my boss had contact with her, so he felt its best he stay home.  We took the test Friday,  i got my results last night, i assume all of the results were in last night as well, so, from what i have heard, i think thats pretty good turn around, considering it was basically over a weekend.

We had 2 employees on the same crew call out sick on the same day, with the same symptoms.  we sent them to get tested, and it took forever.  in fact, longer than 2 weeks.  so my boss went and hired this company to handle our testing.  this was a "test run".

    sounds like a good boss.

Does your good friend know how they got coronavirus and how sick is he/she?

No - he's a pilot, but he claims that is actually pretty safe right now.  Like 5% of regular airline traffic, and strick airline rules about distancing etc...

So most likely some where in an airport during work, but he can't remember being close to anyone for more than 5 minutes.

He feels like utter shit.  Flu x 10 is how he described it. And he's a week in, so we are hoping the respiratory stuff doesn't show up next.

    really scary shit.

  10. What do you guys think about the safety level of blue mountain bike park?  I'm not much of a biker, though I am slowly getting into it.  But just looking for things to do.

I read something on their website about maintaining distance on the downhill to stay out of other riders sweat trail, or something like that, and that kind of freaked me out.

i tested negative for Covid-19.  Yippee.  Obviously this is good news, of course, but really it just means that i didnt have it prior to 9:15 am Friday.  Not like finding out my test was negative changes how i currently do things.  No one in the office or shop tested positive, but my Boss's daughter did, and the accountant ladys other son has now tested positive.

    Good news.

What compelled you to get a test?

A good friend and client of mine just tested positive.

Good point. I don’t think about lodges cause I don’t use them but some of the indoor bootee uppers are in the lodge a couple times everyday.  They have to provide bathrooms otherwise the lots will be filled with piss puddles and look like the slums of Calcutta

Yeah, it's not so vital for the poconos.  Handful of days cold enough to not to be able to hang outside.

But further north, and out west....

We ate at the Yurt in Big Sky - couldn't get a seat inside.  It was about 15F I suppose.  That was a chilly lunch.

  13. We were at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush one year during a polar vortex.  It was like -14F at the bases.  I just can't really imagine how you manage that without a lodge to thaw out in....

    Hell, even single positive digits..

Have to put your lunch in a color to keep it warm and eat in your car???  I guess that's a possibility....

Which mountains?  I’m thinking about doing a lot of midweek mornings at Blue this season and three trips out west or two out west and one to Vermont.

We're all over the road with this.  We might start out with a seasonal rental in the catskills.  Ski Plattekill and Belleayre.  Me and my daughters are kind of pushing for S.Vt and ski Magic, Broomly, Stratton... but it's another 1-1/2 up the road. And who knows if the mountains will evn be open all winter.

On top of this, we 'won' a ski chalet in the French Alps at a charity auction last fall.  We were supposed to be skiing there this X-mas, but doesn't seem likely we will be making that trip.  So the money we were gonna spend on that trip might fund the rental plan.

Then, if we use it a ton, and find it all manageable, try to figure out a way to afford our own place somewhere.

That's kind of the plan...we'll see how it shakes out.

Where out west?  JH again? Where in VT would you go? You don't go north much, do you?

We’ll be skiing it just could be a little jerky jerky and where the heck are you gonna use AT equipment around here.

Blue is offering scenic lift rides and even has a camp happening. If amusement parks can operate ski areas surely can.

AT equipment would require weekend trips to VT to skin and ski resorts closed for COVID....Maybe even the catskill if they made enough snow before hey have to close.

Blue's mountain biking is also open now.  I think the difference is, the virus is gonna come raging back in the fall/early winter, as the air dries out and people spend more time inside.

I think we can safely ski....mountains can safely open the lifts.  It's the lodges I question.

I’m still trying to figure out why outdoor gatherings like pro sporting events are banned. After all, I’ve been told you can’t get it outside in a crowd of thousands as long as roughly 75% of the people wear masks

Yeah, like a stadium at 25% capacity seems kind of possible to me.  But I guess you still would have bathroom lines, food and drink lines, indoors on the concourses...

I don't know...I just want to know if we are skiing this year, or if I should buy an AT set up and forget about lifts operating.

For me yes for most people probably the narrower considering the upcoming JH conditions. Are the 94mm stiff skis?

the 94s are Blizzard Rustlers, so a little stiff under foot, soft tip and tail.  The 112s are Liberty Origins.  Very soft playful ski.

The rustlers are probably the better call, but I just put the LIbertys in the bag....
