  1. 12/18/20. Opening day.
    23° Overcast, No Wind

On mountain around noon after clearing driveway, shoveling decks and gearing up.

No liftlines, ski right on most every time. Only a few not wearing masks. Looked in lodge and only a few people inside

Standard opening day trails open. Beginners, east, west, susquehanna, tioga. In addition lackawanna spur, hiawatha, and Seneca...the natural trail under the C lift.

Surface soft and cut up. Susquehanna was moguled up inconsistently. Seneca was down to grass and dirt in most places.
Poachers were boot deep in natural on Slalom.

    Snowmaking on Delaware and Tunk..

For Friday.....East, West, Beginners, Tioga and Susquehanna. Possibly Hiawatha, Lackawanna and Tioga Spur.

In addition they have been blowing Upper and Lower Tunk and Delaware, so there may be more open T-B....

  3. There is nothing posted on website about which trails will be open. Check tomorrow and they'll be posted. We're going up tomorrow morning to open the road to the cabin and take a few runs...

I was told Union Dale had 12-14" ( about 3-4 miles away from Elk)....

Montage likely got a decent snowfall. If this stuff compacts a little and we get another good storm the trees at Montage will be phenomenal and you can really go explore off the map

Channel 16 weather had just shy of 12" and their production studio is outdoors at the Montage exit off I81.

  5. I saw from NWS the possibility of "Thunder Snow" early Thursday morning. Twice I've skied in a TS.

First time riding on a high speed quad at Park City..... Snowing all morning and intensifying rapidly, suddenly the snow lights up all around us and a tremendous clap of thunder cracks. Suddenly the lift stops but the lightning flashes and thunder didnt... We debated whether, if lightning strikes the cable, and we're between the strike and ground, are we toast?

After about 2 minutes the lift began to move and we unloaded and hurried to the lodge on top to wait out the storm. 20 minutes later, a ski patroller entered the lodge, climbed on a table and announced "we're closing the mountain in 20 minutes and if you don't know the way down, meet out front and we'll lead you back"

We knew the way back, so we geared up and clicked into our skis. As we started down, the person leading disappeared within the first 30 feet.... A very scary decent until quite a bit lower and visibility improved....Something we'll never forget and recall often.

The Second time happened on our first ride to the top on the gondola at Snowbird.... But that story is for another time...

Anyone else have a TS experience??

The downside is weekend weather forecast shows temps in the mid to upper 40s with > 50 % chance of rain.

Yes they won't groom, they'll leave the whales until after the rain...

  7. I have a research scientist friend who is developing a therapeutic treatment to eliminate the spread of the virus in a person's body, once infected. Essentially attacking the disease on the molecular level. His process effectively constructs a wall around the diseased cells not allowing them to infect any other cells within the body.

His process focus was originally designed to attack cancer cells, but since March his team has turned their attention to fighting Covid 19. Last week they began limited clinical trials in Singapore, his main research center.

This man is a genius and I fully expect him to win a Nobel prize someday.

His company name is Hummingbird Bioscience and was featured on CNBC last weekend.

  8. Please Use this thread for Elk Posts..... Elk Has Not Been Sold....

Overall Pricing for Season Passes and The Big and Friendly Book remain the same as the last two years.

Overall the Management and Staff are doing their best to maintain their excellent skiing experience in this very trying year.

THINK SNOW!  (and/or good snowmaking weather).

Summer party is gonna be Lit!!!  Wow..I’ll ski at Ski Cooper..I’m hitting at least a few new places this season.

We skied Cooper.... It's small and up around 12000' feet in elevation (?). 10th Mountain Division had a training center there in WWII days.

The bar area had about three tables and four bar stools.... No Coffee Mug for our collection.
