Well, I had a day off from work, thank goodness, on a day when the visibility was outstanding. Of course, I had to put up with six to seven minute lines, but the view was worth it.
I hope when ole2planker visits next week he gets the view without the crowds!

Could someone give me their pass barcode. I just need the barcode. I think If I take my pass from last year and then put 04-05 on it and then put someones barcode from this year I would have no problem because when they scan it it would beep.
Why would someone risk getting their pass revoked? That barcode in all likelihood leads to a name. It may even display the name of the holder to the liftie. (It certainly does here where I am.) Anyone letting you scan their barcode would be in danger of getting THEIR pass revoked as being in collusion with you.

today around 445 id say there were about three fire trucks over at the northridge houses so me and my friend went to check it out and we smelled smoke but we didnt see any fire. it was rite next to the terrain park. anybody know of anything.
That's not Northridge, that's the Village at Camelback. Northridge is across the road from the mountain.

I have no trouble giving the dude credit, I am just arguing with the way you presented his achievement, it's misleading:
The 'Dude started with bib #117 out of 124 racers, which is waaaay the hell back. Finished in 39th place, with 194.12 points.You didn't talk about course conditions, you talked about positions. The dude did a great job, no question, but not a leap from 117 to 39.
I can't remember the specific races where I have seen two separate courses right alongside each other, one for men, one for women, but there have been quite a few of them. Also, when the siblet was at Mammoth, the girls went second for both slaloms. The NorAms here last year the men went first at least one of the days as well. I certainly wasn't at either Brantling or Swain, but I wouldn't assume anything. Interestingly, both races give the start times of the races of both the men and the women as the same. I am going to assume that is sloppy bookkeeping on their part, otherwise it would look as if that could only happen on two separate courses.

Results are in from Brantling, where he also moved up. Started 62, finished 47th.
Normally when you finish better than your bib number, you're moving up. This doesn't apply to the top starters, who start in random, not points, order.

Assuming he had all those ruts and they didn't have their own course, the rut part would be true. But you can't say he started 116 and finished 39, you're comparing apples to oranges. He moved up 19 places.
Also, girls don't ALWAYS ski first. At least not out here. It depends on the course and conditions.

I feel a little better after skiing with him a few early season days knowing that he's faster and that I haven't necessarily gotten slower.

He may have had bib 117, but the first male bib was 60, so he really started as man #58. Still a great result, tho.

I unofficially opened our home hill, but got sick of hiking...so no, not really, this is first day out in PA. And I'm forbidden from letting my kid cut school, can you believe that? Freakin' pre-K!!! My wife even said she was going to call the school to be sure I didn't lie and take her anyway.
And, Skifreak, don't ever let these guys talk you into doing something that might get you chained to the trailer hitch of a Jeep and dragged down a highway.
God, if she can't cut pre-K, how's she gonna do the FIS circuit when she gets older? I mean, preK's just babysitting, when she's doing FIS there will be actual learning and grades involved!!!!!

Four Pennsylvania men spent a subzero night and day in the woods after getting lost outside the boundaries at Killington Resort. They were rescued after a helicopter spotted their campfire.

"I had some Christmas cookies with me I gave them," said Game Warden Donald Isabelle, one of the first rescuers to make contact with the four missing men in the woods late Monday afternoon. "They were pretty hungry. It didn't take them long to eat."
More than three dozen rescue workers launched a search around 4:30 a.m. Monday when the four men were reported missing by another man, who told Vermont State Police his friends had skied out of bounds at Killington Ski Resort around 12:15 p.m. Sunday and never returned to their hotel room.
Searchers battled frigid temperatures and the clock Monday, combing the trails and back woods of the ski resort. They were hampered by about 4 inches of freshly fallen snow.
It wasn't until around 3 p.m. Monday that a Vermont National Guard helicopter that had recently arrived at the scene spotted a campfire and the men in the woods.
The helicopter crew directed rescue workers already in the woods to the four men, who were able to locate them and guide them out of the woods.
The four missing men and their guides emerged around 5 p.m. Monday, nearly 30 hours after they were last seen skiing out of bounds.
William Sharp, a climatologist with the National Weather Service based in Rutland, said the temperature dropped to between 20 and 25 below zero.
The lost men, all from Perkasie, Pa., included two snowboarders and two skiers.
Jared Rush, 22, and Michael Styer, 23, were the snowboarders. Jared Raytek and Thomas Arnold, both 23, were the skiers.
The men were treated by paramedics and then taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center for checkups.
Vermont State Police said they were notified at 4:30 a.m. Monday that the men were missing by their friend, Joel Barlow, 23, also of Perkasie, Pa. He told police he and his friends went skiing Sunday afternoon at the top of Killington Peak when they traveled off the trail, out of bounds.
Police said Barlow made his way to the base lodge at Rams Head and took a bus back to his Killington hotel room. Police said he awoke around 3 a.m. Monday and realized his friends were still missing and called authorities.

Like I said, I just wanted her to finish the race. Now, hopefully today she can actually run a good race.
All the Northern division girls had a tough time as they haven't had any gate training to speak of. In fact, someone told me most of the other resorts in our region aren't open yet.

why do you race?
Actually, I interpreted this question differently than the rest of you. Atomic had said he took the advice of skidude and ski999 when he bought his skis. Therefore, as I understood it, bcboy wanted to know why he was getting advice from racer-types, he was asking if Atomic was a racer.
If he had used a question mark where he should have ("Why? Do you race?") it might have been clearer. By leaving out the question mark and making it all one sentence, it sounded like he was asking the reason for Atomic liking to race.
At least I think that is what is happening here.

Ya got Ray Panella still skiing at, I think, 89, so what's the issue with a woman ten years younger still skiing??

Out here I have to ask if it's alright if I put the bar down. Very few people do it, although I've had a few who said THANKS.
When you're on a chair that rises 2100 feet, then that's a lot of time for your legs to be dangling and it's tiring.
I hate places that have the bar but no foot rest!!!

Yes, tell her to win
That ain't happenin'. I just want her to 1) FINISH the race, and 2) improve her start position. She's up against people who almost all have points in the low hundreds or below a hundred. If she can just hold her own, I'll be happy.

Naturally, she is off to a set of ferocious FIS races and she hasn't had ANY gate training yet this year. At this point, all I hope is she finishes and gets back to me in one piece.
If you're out there skiing Dec. 18-21, head toward the course for me and cheer her on.

Hey Sib, where are those vertical feet?
I'm already over 200,000...though only loosely following vertical this winter.
I'll be catching up, I'm only behind 40,000 from where I was last year at this time and already averaging more each time than I was at this time last year.

Where you place doesn't matter, especially racing out of state. It's how close your time is to the fastest racer. Like NASTAR in a way, since in NASTAR nobody really knows what placed they finished, only what their handicap was.
In Vermont races, you may have 40 guys within a second of each other on a 50 second course. The better the competition, the more clumped together at the top they are.
USSA racers are racing against every other kid in their age group in the US. 'Dude started this season the 3021st ranked slalom racer in the US among 15 to 19-year-olds. There are 6000 or so in his grouping. He probably moved up 150 spots with today's finish.
The advantage to being a PA racer is that the top 2 or 3 earn invitations to the Junior Olympics. Although they are heavy underdogs when they get there, it's still an opportunity to have the race of your life and get looked at by the US Ski Team.
Ski, just to bring you up to speed, once he hits J2, JO's will be even less likely. There is now only the National JO's, no regional JO's once you hit J2 and above. The reason I am told is that the best racers at that age are doing FIS races at that time and were skipping regional championships. The result was the best racers weren't at the JO's anymore. So, now there are just the National JO's this year. That is the word from our coach out here anyway.

It must be nice to ski there everyday
Well, unfortunately, for December I am mostly working. Also, this place is also known as Big Foggy. For three days of skiing, two have had terrible visibility with great snow. Then this third time, great visibility with terrible snow. And I decided I prefer visibility.

First, let me emphasize that we had views today, but lousy conditions. Two days of rain and temps in the 50's, followed by a sudden drop to the teens produced hardpack and lots of "chicken heads" and larger chunks. But, to a CB skier, it was "normal". These westerners complained a lot, though!!! The K2 XP's handled it in stride. They are not just a powder ski!

yea, a few members of the board have them. Sibhusky skied 1.5 million verticle feet last year, but shes out west. Skimom had over 1 million mostly skiing here in PA. I was going to buy one, but decided against it. But I would like to see how many verticle feet i ski.
Hey, a few years back I also got within a few feet of 1 million skiing mostly in PA. The trick is to be among the "less employed".

We have had practically NO SNOW so far. It's only coming in three to six inches at a time. Last year the whole place was open by now. We are still not entirely open. BUT, we are the only place with this much snow in the area. Ski teams from Washington state and elsewhere in Montana are coming here to train because they have even LESS snow than we have!!!
