Season Ending...

A reality we all must face sooner than later.... but at least we don't have it this bad:

http://unofficialnetworks.com/sandia-peaks-ski-season-118129/

"The Ski Resort of Sandia Peak,
NM (not AZ) is already calling it quits for the 2012-2013 ski season.
The resort has only received 32 inches of snowfall this season resulting
in a base depth of just 14″. It has been such a dismal season that only
the resort’s beginner lift and slope were able to open at all this
year.

Sandia Peak typically has a shorter season than most ski areas but this season the resort will be closing a full month ahead of schedule.

The resort will remain at the ready to reopen the ski facility if the
area receives a late season dump but the long range forecast is not
looking too good."

Interesting. I grew up 5 minutes from the base of the tram, and can tell you this area is almost entirely dependent on natural snowfall. The snowmaking capabilities are very limited, not because of temperature, but water. All the moisture has missed this area to the north this year. Kind of a funny little ski area, but super convenient for those who are too lazy to drive an hour to Santa Fe or 2 hours to Taos.

I've skied and snowshoed there in the middle of the night on a full moon and it's a very cool experience.
