Got out for a flat tour around the parks by my house tonight. Not much breaking trail since this route sees a lot of hiker traffic. It’s pretty cool since there are a lot of little bridges across small streams. The lake that the one trail loops around is almost totally frozen, which made for some nice scenery. I also managed to not almost fall in the river tonight, very much unlike when I biked this route last week. Are dynafit toes always a pain to step into, or am I doing something wrong?

  2. I'm sad I don't have more boner cities to give. @Benm nailed it. The untracked stuff might not have been quite as deep today as yesterday, but with coverage so good everywhere and everything in play, you could just ski so much more freely. You know it's gonna be a good day when you're standing in line waiting for the lift to spin and patrol announces to the crowd that they didn't groom everything, there's 4 foot drifts, and "just don't ski in the woods alone". Saw a few patrollers poaching some bike trails, so then all bets were off. Quad liftline hotlaps were 💯.

That’s the shit I do like!!!!  Ski trips are grate. My first overnight ski trip was in 1993 with my dad to windham and I ate sausage pizza with root beer and no powder.  Stayed at the windham arms.  I could go through every ski trip I’ve been on since then but I’ll save that for another time.  It’s awesome going on ski trips that’s why it’s been so fun having various PASRs visit Jackson hole with me.  I even met VTMark in Stowe the one year...enjoy. These are the best of times!!!  And don’t check your work email. I made that mistake an hour ago.

I support you creating a thread with the chronological history of every ski trip you've ever been on, just to see the sheer rain man factor of it all. I definitely have a few fond memories from each trip i've been on, but i definitely do not remember what I had for dinner on the first trip I went on. Well, now that I think of it, I think we got mcdonalds at some point cause it was right next to the hotel we stayed at in Rutland... carry on.

From there we went to coming soon which held plenty of untouched. The top part is flat but amazingly fun since it was deeeeeeep. The headwall hit and it was boner city to paradise. Skied that twice.

I'm putting forward a motion that the lower headwall of coming soon from here on out be referred to as Boner City.

No good photos from me today. Too busy getting lost in the woods.

What time? I can't promise anything with time since it will depend on the conditions. I was hoping to be on the snow by 11:00. I can't imagine it would take more than 90-120 minutes for a full loop. If it does than I should really just stop skiing.

Wish i could join ya. If things get a little refresh on Friday I'd be in for another round on Saturday if ya want. I'll bring the hiking carrier so I can put rose on my back since she doesn't have skins. 😒

Still in the market for xc skis if anybody comes across anything.

you have skis with touring bindings... get some skins! not exactly the same, but it's a thought.

Haha, my current boots (and all the various things that have been done to them) are from the boot doctor's other location in Taos.

Anybody know how to tell what size last my current boots are?  I forget if they are 97 or 100.

If the cuff has the "L.V." graphic on it, it's low 97mm. If it doesn't, it's 100mm.image.png.22397ed29f0cfd90df193dbba185337e.png

Going to get some new footbeds this afternoon.  Only masking the problem of needing new boots but I can't figure out where to buy from or what to get so I'll continue procrastinating.

You still in the RX130s? If you like them, i've seen some deals on RX/XT 120s and 130s floating around on the interwebs... not stellar deals, but ~$400 range instead of like $700+ retail.

Tuesday whenever the roads are drivable. Since I'm already off work Tuesday I'll try to get to Blue for epic powder conditions and stay there til the Interstates are passable.

Getting to blue will be harder than driving any interstate. NY does a good job with the thruway. I better not have to pass a sonic clogging up the access road.

that's a google maps car, no? the ones on 476 definitely have more crap on the roof than the other photo posted. I'm waiting for a letter in the mail; i think i mighta got popped this weekend. anyone remember the google maps snowmobile rig from a few years ago?

It is. I'm just slightly concerned about a potential snowstorm Monday night into Tuesday. Was planning to leave early Tues morning

Yeah, I know I'll get "STFU salty stop complaining about snow on a ski trip". I love snowstorms when I can easily get to the mountain, but I'm not driving 6 hours in a blizzard. So hopefully it comes before or after my trip if we get some purd.

Regardless I'd only lose 1 day out of 4 probably.

to be fair, i wouldn't wanna drive the NY thruway in a blizzard in a chevy sonic either

I would expect if Blue did join Epic or Ikon it would likely do the following:

    1. Increase crowds at Blue

    2. Increase pass prices (I expect them to go up sharply anyway given increase in day prices)

    2. End VIP lines - VIP is one of very few resorts may have them and mountains on Epic pass (don't know about Ikon) tend to homogenize operations.

So if I were a Blue pass holder I would only be rooting for it if I hoped to do a substantial part of my skiing at places other than Blue.

For myself I would be likely to next year get whichever of Ikon or Epic added Blue - as I prefer Blue to the current PA options on Epic (or the lack of any on Ikon).

Blue doesn't choose to "join" Epic. Sure, there are a few resorts that have agreements with Vail for a few days on an Epic pass, but Blue is not gonna be one of them. Zero incentive on either end for that sort of arrangement here. The only way Blue becomes part of epic pass is if they get bought. It didn't pan out last time there was hype around it; I highly doubt it's gonna happen for next season, especially after such a turbulent year where epic resorts, who make a ton of their money on the retail/hospitality portion of their business, is probably already stretched thin and has seemingly cut quality and services at some of their less prestigious properties to save money.

I guess Ikon is a possibility, as they don't have the same "owned by Vail Resorts" operating structure, since Alterra doesn't actually own all the resorts on the Ikon pass. I see the business sense there for Alterra in being able to attract away some of the crowd that jumped ship from local passes to Epic passes for this season and are now pissed off with how things have been going at jfbb. I'm not sure how much it helps blue though. If there was a blue + ikon add on, that'd be pretty sweet and check the boxes for me, since I do like the northeast options it provides a bit better than epic (stowe aside). Just not sure how much it would really benefit blue. Doesn't seem like they've really been hurting for business the past few seasons, honestly.

I'd say Peak and then Epic pass pricing has driven down what Blue can charge as - apart from folks who live within ~an hour of Blue - they need to offer a price that is attractive compared to the price of a pass that includes NY and VT options in addition to a PA option (Western options less relevant since Covid has folks reluctant to fly).

If I were Blue, I would wait to see Epic price point (and Ikon's if they add a PA option) before setting their price - which needs to be at least $200 less to be attractive.

While I'd normally agree with this, I'm not sure what a "normal" ski season looks like anymore. For passholders at blue, and most PASR members in particular, aside from slightly longer midweek lift lines and not packing chairs, it's been a pretty normal season. The weather in PA is still finicky, everyone still parks in their normal spots, boots up at their cars, and have some beers in the lot after skiing for a few hours in the morning.

The wildcard is Epic's reservation system. Does that continue for next year? Epic is definitely appealing because as others have said, there's locations outside of PA that are day-tripable, and even more that are relatively easy weekend trips. Having to reserve days makes it much harder to storm chase, though, which is realistically what interests me most about a multi-mountain pass that's good multiple places in NY/New England.

Until the kid is skiing full days and wants to be there, blue is gonna be easiest for me due to proximity to babysitting, so I'm all but locked in there regardless of price. I'm very curious to see what prices end up being for various different options. In a super weird year, blue's done well for their loyal season pass customers while we all hear the endless complaints about vail properties and the epic shitshow associated with some of them, so that's gotta count for something.

Yeah it snowed but visibility was terrible and my friends didn’t want to buy day tickets so we snowshoed instead. I def think skinning is so much more efficient. Snowshoeing wears you out.

I'll have to deal with standing in lines on Sunday when skiing with my brah. He'll want to ski longer than 90 minutes and we only ski together once a year at most. He didnt make it last season due to having a baby.
