  1. Wonder if they are trying to move their customer base to other mountains and plan to close Frost and Boulder eventually. Can't have been too profitable this year and no reason to expect future years to be much better.

Seems like a short sighted business plan if so. Surely the mountains are worth more as resorts than selling off the lifts and equipment. Maybe I could see selling them as a whole, but why drive away your customer base making a sale less attractive?

Unless the real estate is worth more as land than as a ski area. I can't really see that though, just judging off the Split Rock timeshare resort near there, it's pretty low budget. Doesn't seem like developers are beating down the doors.

  2. No names on them but on occasion (about a third of the time) a ski resort will ask me to show my ski club membership card when I use these cards.

Another benefit you can get from your ski club membership is Windham sells a $30 ski club card to ski club members good for one anytime lift ticket and discounts every other day. So if you go to Windham once that pays for your ski club membership right there.

My goal for the remainder of the year is to get in a day each at Blue, Shawnee (tomorrow) and Windham to get full value for what I have paid for. May also try Big Bear.

Tried Alpine last year with the kids, who mocked what passed for black diamonds there based on their experience at Shawnee. Will not be back there.

    Great info, thanks

  3. Yep December is where I blow most of my ski budget. But this year it was at Killington and Belleayre.

Mountain Sports Club always offers $25 tix to Shawnee with no black out dates, so I usually pick up a couple of those for December skiing with kids.

Just checked. The actual name is the PMVB Ski and Ride Card. I imagine that stands for Pocono Mountain Visitor Bureau. The clubs order all the cards at one time, so you need to order them before they put in their order.

Get in on it early next year.

Do they come with names on them? I'm wondering if I can order and give a couple to my dad. Not that I'm trying to short the club out of another membership fee, but . . . Okay, I guess I am. But the cards would literally be the only benefit we would look for from the club.

  4. It is called the PA Ski and Ride card. It is offered through clubs affiliated with NJ Ski Counci. Don't have to live in NJ to join. Pay $30/year to join princeton ski club and order as many cards as you like. It is the best deal in PA skiing unless you work for a mountain or ski one mountain enough to bring your per day cost for a season pass under $15/day. That would be about 35 days at Blue for a season pass to be as good a deal.

Princeton Ski Club called it the "Pocono Card" when I inquired about it, but they had already stopped selling for the season

  5. Enjorales do you have an all days pass or weekday only. Most of the PASRs park in the lower lot. TheDude4Bides doesn't cause he has a sports car and Matt Edge doesn't cause he's superstitious and lost his phone in the lower lodge.

Lower lot is so much better as its a real quick exit.

I've got the all days pass, most of my skiing is on weekends since I work M-F and don't get home until 6, sometimes later. And I can only justify being away from the wife and kids every so often on week nights after work.

Rode last night too, Dude and friends, GSSucks were around. Was real fun, gotta get the days in looks like next weekend may be it.

Nice. I'm sure we crossed paths. Probably while I was standing on the side of a trail resting, lol. Yeah, I thought the base looked a little ugly in some areas on the trailsides, but my inexperienced eye don't know shit. I hope we get at least this weekend and next, locked into Camel on Sat and want to hit Blue at least once more

  6. Time to start making that season pass pay for itself! Headed up solo after getting off work, 20 minutes door to door and I was parking in the upper lot. Wanted to park down low but had to check out what night clam night is at Slopeside because my wife was gonna bring the kids up for dinner if it was Tuesdays, but it's Thursdays. Wish that info had been online somewhere. Tuesday is kids under 10 eat free in case you were wondering.

On the snow by about 6:40 pm and put in a solid hour and 3 quarters. Started off with Lazy to Falls, conditions were mashed potatoes soft but not too torn up down Lazy, and same on Falls except there were some significant piles to be avoided. I'm working on my ability to read the bumps and ruts well, I get caught off guard hitting some of it and throwing me off more often that I would like.

Six was running with no waits to speak of, no quad. Took the express back to the top and decided to run Paradise. A groomer must have made a run up the right side because there was cord there with only 4 or 5 tracks through it, so stayed over there and had a nice run to the bottom. So nice it was like a shampoo bottle, I had to rinse and repeat. Back up again for Nightmare to Dreamweaver. Caught a ski in a pile and went down coming to a stop for a break at the transition between the two, but otherwise a fun, uneventful run.

Next up decided to run Switchback, probably the run of the night for me. Same soft conditions as everywhere else, trail broken up but not so bumped that I had any trouble staying in control. Fun, fun run. Burma Chair running so took that back up and ran down Widowmaker for the pow shots. Didn't like the look of Chute so ran down to pick up the bottom half of Burma Road and back to the double. Up one more time for last real run of the night, down Main Street. Thinking about it. maybe that was the run of the night. Great run, stayed out of the muck, picked a good line down the clear parts of the trail. Great last run of the night.

Rode back up the chair and took the short run to the lodge. That's the worst part of using the upper lodge, you end your day with a chair ride and crap run back, either across Connector or down Easy Out/Vista. I think I'll be a lower lot guy from here out, unless there's a good reason to be up top like a $40 Slopeside voucher or something, haha.

A good night, 7 runs, a quick 6600 vert and 8 miles skied. According to Ski Tracks, hit a new personal top speed again and broke 40mph for the first time. Unless the wife really wants clams on Thursday, probably looking at Saturday at the Camel for next time on the snow. Have one more day we have to use up there before they shut it down on us.

  7. I know, thanks. I was planning on posting up on Craig's, just figured maybe I would try here first, share a deal with the people here. Especially since people here know what these things are, there's nothing on the card that even says what it is. Little bit of trust needed, random guy on Craigslist might not have it, lol.

  8. Nice that you have an activity you can do with your dad!!! What kind of a journalist were you?? Like newspapers and magazines?? I'm friends with a few reporters!!!

Never made it a career, but I was a journalism major for two years at Penn State main before lack of funds forced me to drop out. Wrote for the paper while I was there though, it's a pretty impressive operation. I enjoyed doing it but print journalism is dead or dying, so not real sorry it didn't work out.

  9. Had a great day today at Blue skiing with my dad and a guy from work. Arrived at about 9:30 to the upper lodge to find no windows open and tickets being sold out of the rental center only, but after standing in line for about 10 minutes we spotted them line a few people up in the cattle chutes out at the window so we jumped over. Procured season pass and were on the snow by about 10.

They had a bunch of the fan guns blowing all day, and it seemed like the snow they were blowing out was very sticky. It made Vista and Paradise a bit of a challenge, as I found I'd be skiing along and hit some of the sticky snow and slow down so much a few times I almost pitched over face first. Worked through I and just avoided those trails for most of the day. Conditions on other trails ranged from soft and sugary, especially in turns, to hard with some small marbles on some others.

Really ratcheted up the ambitions in today's session. After running a Vista to Burma to get a feel for conditions we jumped on the six and headed back to the top. Main St chair didn't open until about 11 or 11:30. Took a trip down Paradise, then back up for a run down Lazy. Top half of Lazy was probably the run of the day, I thought the conditions were just awesome. From the 180 down to the double double was a little softer and chewed up, but nothing terrible. Next up was Paradise to Dreamweaver, another nice run although my dad had some trouble with the weaver.

Another Lazy run and we noticed the double was open, took it to the top and I decided to try some new to me terrain so went down upper half of Widowmaker and popped out to meet my dad and we ran Burma while my co-worker broke off to run some more advanced terrain before lunch. Had a couple minute wait for my dad which was good because it gave me a chance to get all the snow out of my jacket pockets from the chest deep powder on Widowmaker.

My dad's heel was bothering him (apparently an old tennis injury that flares up) after he tweaked it in a fall on Dreamweaver. We popped in to the shop in the Valley and picked him up a footbed in hopes that the better heel cup would help, he said it did. 40% off too, nice. Ran Lazy and we decided to cruise down Lower Sidewinder, that was a mistake. Giant sugar piles in the turns, pops wiped out good on one of them, and then again on the first of the 3 rollers. I felt bad for suggesting that route.

Headed into lunch at Slopeside. After the usual calamari app I had the South Philly Special, roast pork sandwich. Can't reccomend it. It was messy, which I expected with the generous helping of jus, but the pork felt like a deli meat rather than fresh carved, there was no bitterness in the broccoli rabe (and the stems on it were way too big) and in addition the Provolone was not sharp. It wasn't horrible but there are better options.

After lunch we took the Vista lift back up and split up again, with pops going Vista to Burma and we went Widowmaker to Little Gap to catch him halfway down Burma. Came wound corner and he was getting back up from a fall after a confrontation with a sugar pile. Tweaked the heel again and he was done for the day. After that my coworker and I had about an hour left and hit it hard. Went Lazy to Falls, then Nightmare to Dreamweaver, Upper and Lower Main Street twice and finished with a run down Switchback. Since we had to take the Main St chair back up to get to th lodge we ran out the upper part of Widowmaker to the Connector cut. Just couldn't resist the titty deep.

Just a great day, major expansion of my comfort zone. According to Ski Tracks app set new personal highs for speed and steep. Looking forward to getting back out.

Sorry my shit is so long, I was a writer in a past life (journalism major) and tend to ramble.

  10. So each park ticket comes with the ability to use 3 FP's per day?

Yes. You want to make a profile at Mydisneyexpwrience.com and add a guest for everyone going with. After you buy your tickets you'll assign one to each person. Then you can go on there and choose 3 fast pass experiences for each guest per day that they have a ticket. You can do this 60 days before the first day of your trip if you are staying on property, and 30 days before if you don't have a Disney hotel reservation

  11. Thanks for the Disney tips. I like the idea of staying near Epcot so we can finish our days there and have dinner in one of the country's.

Beach Club or Boardwalk can't be beat for that. like 5 minute walk from either and you're at the International Gateway entrance to EPCOT -- if unfamiliar it brings you in right before France.

Fastpass+ Pro Tip: the My Disney Experience app is pretty much a must while in the parks. You can check all the wait times for rides right on it. You can also modify Fastpass selections on there, but you can't use it to actually make any choices. Once you use up your 3 for the day, you can make more but have to do it at the touchscreen kiosks set up at a couple locations in each park. It's much faster to just grab the first FP you see when making these selections at the kiosk, then go on your phone to check for availability to change it. The kiosk is slower and clunky to click through, and the screen is all kinds of worn out (sub-tip: use your fingernail). So just snag whatever gets you off of there right away, then change it in the app.

FP Bonus Tip: If you get to a ride that you have a FP for and the wait for standby is 10-15 minutes or less (unlikely in summer, but it could happen), consider just getting in the standby line and changing that FP with the app. Could very well be a time savings over tracking down the kiosk after and getting the next FP.

Since you mentioned restaurants, if not aware of the reservations situation, DON'T sleep on that. You can make dining reservations for 10 days of your trip 180 days out from the first day of your trip. The popular table service restaurants are usually gone the very day that they become available. Some people with shorter trips find that they never see availability at some of them because their whole trip falls within other peoples 180+10 and they are all booked up before they can even see availabilty.

  12. Been there a bunch of times. First time for my middle and youngest so I'm really stoked for them.

Nice. Assuming you've been in the past few years, since the changeover to Fastpass+? If not, do a little reading on making the most out if that system. Especially in summer, the parks are miserable these days without it.

I'm heading there in August. Where's the best place to stay in the park? We usually stay outside at the Vistana, Hilton or Waldorf.

Best place to stay on-property is tough to answer. A lot depends on budget, since Disney has Value, Moderate and Deluxe resorts. In the Deluxe realm, Boardwalk and Beach/Yacht Club are nice for adults with the EPCOT proximity, and the pool at B/Y Club is the nicest on property. For families that care more about the parks, Contemporary is hard to beat. It's on the monorail for MK and EP access, and is really the only resort in true walking distance to MK. Polynesian is also nice and o. The Monorail, but the feature pool has been under construction and I'm not sure it will be reopened by this summer. Wilderness Lodge is nice but is under a bunch of renovations for the foreseeable future as they expand the Disney Vacation Club there. Animal Kingdom Lodge is very nice for families that like to spend some time at the resort, the rooms with savannah views are sweet, and even if staying in the lower priced rooms there are lots of community animal views and the pools at both lodges are super nice.

The only moderate I have stayed at was one night at Coronado Springs and thought it was really nice. Sprawling resort, very nice feature pool.

I've not stayed at a Value resort, but understand that Art of Animation is the gold standard there. In fact, many consider it it's own category, like a value plus. Beyond that, Pop Century is a notch better than the All Stars.

If proximity is more important than the "extras" that come with staying on property (busses, free MagicBands, extra magic hours, 60 day window for booking Fastpasses, charging privileges in parks) Bonnet Creek is supposed to be REALLY nice. It's withing Disney borders but doesn't come with the extras because it is not owned by Disney. The pool there looks awesome.

  13. you would think i would have been smart enough to think of that yesterday and just buy it while im at blue, but unfortunatley im a fucking idiot

That's a violation on everyone that was there with you yesterday and didn't remind you. I had hoped you would see my post before you headed out and it would remind you to grab it.

  14. Hit up Camelback today using second day on a triple ticket for there. Would have rather gone yesterday, but it was blacked out. Started out running some of their top to bottom greens getting a feel for the conditions. Started out hard and icy but softened up quickly and were nice through lunch. After lunch maybe a little too soft, only made a few runs after lunch. Partially because of conditions, partially because of fatigue, and partially because they closed all the fixed grip lifts (or at least the convenient ones) while we were in having lunch leaving longer, annoying lines at the quads.

Ended up with about 25 runs for just over 20 miles skied, my longest day thus far. Quads are paying for it right now. Covered all the greens and blues, and a couple runs down Pharoah to mix in a black. Runs of the day for me were Nile Mile and my Pharaoh. Took one spill, on Big Pocono. It was bumped up a little and I wasn't ready for it, misjudged a couple and ended up getting thrown in the backseat. Caught the left ski and couldn't power it back on just the right, went down soft and slid 25-30 ft down the slope on my back, which was actually kinda fun, lol. Got up and finished the run with no issues.

Was a good day. Next day on the snow is a play hooky from work day this Friday at Blue.

  15. So since I'm planning to buy a season pass for next year which give me the rest of this year gratis, I have a triple ticket that I only used one day off of. I'd like to sell it offset some of the cost of the pass. Like to get $80, it's the weekend version so $40 a day for 2 open-close any days tix seems fair. Paid $180 originally.

My dad is in the same boat and offering one up as well, same deal.
