  1. This sounds sick, as more plans develop I might join. I'm a backpacker in the summer and don't think it would be that much a problem... keep updating your plans as they are made.

The hike isn't that hard, just try to remember to stay as light as possible. It is 2.2 miles but straight uphill, if you don't plan to ski the same day you hike up you got like 8 hours so I think anyone can do it.

  2. I've done it twice. It's a fun thing to do but the skiing/riding is nothing spectacular. But its the whole experience. I wouldn't bother with doing it again but it was fun when I was younger.

Nothing spectacular ? where else do you find 40 degree shit with a 1000 vert to ski in May.

We will be there in late April early May there are five in our group and we will have plenty of beer stop by if you around and share a brew it gets boring as hell at night.

  3. If your one that complains about the cost of skiing being ridiculous, this is why. Lawsuits aimed at squeezing money out of ski areas because of someone elses stupidity or carelessness.

Ummm no, the Bird regardless of the outcome of this case will not be in any financial trouble. Additionally, the insurance premium dealio is massively exaggerated it can be rough for some resorts and alot better for others. Regardless some of the numbers you hear tossed around are straight BS, think about everything that goes into running a mountain like Snowbird and then think what that must cost. Even if you have never been there compare it to say a Bear Creek or Camelback and then multiply.

  4. If the object isn't marked and isn't covered by enough snow to safely ride over it then yeah, it does matter. To quote the article;

That's going to result in possibly tens of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills. One of ski patrol's major jobs is to close any unsafe terrain and with what I read about the case it sounds like the resort was found at fault because the hazard wasn't marked.

I think what makes this article a little strange is that that they're saying he "collided with a wall." Usually when you say something like that it means you run headfirst into a wall, whereas the rest of the article makes it seem like the wall was mostly buried except for a small section that was disguised by new snow. I could easily see how someone would be cruising down the mountain and hit an unmarked object like that.

Read the article again, the ruling has nothing to do with the merits of the case, rather the legal question regarding the waiver of liability and other laws Utah has protecting resorts.

My buddy knows this dude and he is a good skier. I don't like the idea of suing the resort, yet I can understand why he feels the need to try to get a payday, ten of thousands my ass, dude has had years of PT and very serious injuries.

I agree with your reasoning except you don't know where the wall is. It will be difficult to describe where this is but it is on one of the birds infamous cat paths near Emma. The retaining wall was put there a long long time ago to prevent the complete erosion of the cat path. Additionally the retaining wall isn't on the actual cat path. To hit the retaining wall you would have to duck a rope and travel approximately 100 ft before you hit the wall. The current dispute revolves around the rope, he says there was a gap and he thought it was an entrance to trees, the bird says it was up and he went out of control under the rope and kept going into the wall.

Ultimately, the bird will probably settle out of court. It would cost more to get this to trial than it would to settle and the dude isn't paralyzed and generally still likes skiing.

  5. Nice ! May you be blessed by endless face shots

Was Y chute open at Snowbasin ? Let us know, if you would, about honeycomb and Fantasy Ridge, word from my friends is that its quite dire but the snow charts seem ok.

  6. I don't "practice" right now--I have a government appointment. I've only been at my job since August, so I don't know whether things are slow or busy right now. We have enough work to keep us busy, but it's not super busy or anything. Litigation, in general, is always busy. Right now, though, nationally, structured finance is really, really slow!

Government work, that actually sounds kind of cool. Litigation is always cyclical from a personal perspective but lately things have been really slow in Philly. The way I can always tell is when we start doing asbestos work. It is so unbelievably boring with the 10,000 plaintiffs and all that you always save it for last, like I can't make hours last.

Structured finance slow No Way! I mean we are totally banking on some of those SPV's.

  7. If you don't mind me asking what time of law do you practice in the Poconos/Scranton and is everything really slow right now there too ?

If litigation didn't pay so well no one would do it, 60% of the time your odds are only slightly better than flipping a coin and I am only partially joking.

  8. Dear Friend ,

After much contemplation Taos Ski Valley has decided to open our slopes to snowboarding beginning March 19, 2008. It is in the adventurous spirit of Ernie and Rhoda Blake we welcome the challenges and anticipate the opportunities that this decision implies. While there are many reasons why we have chosen this season to make such a significant change to our company

  9. In my haste I forgot to mention that even if I was the most self centered skier on the planet, I would be insane to not acknowledge the fact that skiing is infinitely better off since the introduction of the snowboard. Skiing actually owes Jake Burton a favor. Snow sports as a whole would not exist as they do without all that snowboarding has created, new school skiing's culture which is the fastest growing part of skiing, was to some degree taken directly from the great culture surrounding snowboarding.

  10. What the fuck are you talking about? I've worked at a shop for 5 years through high school and college, met our rep every year, been to every clinic and demo day, if you go into a shop and they tell you you can't buy it one thing without the rest of the package - the shop is lieing to you. That shot all your creditability to hell because you just don't know what the hell you are saying.

Stop being a burton-hater and advertising-hater. Burton does more for this sport than any other snowboard company, Burton boards are made in North America for the most part - only GNU/Lib Tech, Santa Cruz (I believe?) and Arbor can say that. They are one of the oldest companies, and they are still independent. They are nothing like Walmart. Sure their stuff is the most popular, but that is not without reason.

And opening for new brands? Go look in a good shop, there is more choice now than ever. As Ride and K2 have faltered, GNU/Libtech, Arbor, Rome, Batteleon, 32, and Flow have started growing. There are more independents than ever.

Relax dude I have no sword in this fight, I could care less what Burton does, but you do know that Burton requires relativley insane buying minimums. I don't know what shop you worked in but if you were there five years you would know this. Here is a thread on PSIA that talks about buying minimums and snow sports, the point of the posts are not important but you can clearly see buying minimums exist. For what it is worth, which is nothing, but I think Burton is cool but even you have to admit they are the biggest player and they let that be known.

    http://www.psia.org/forum/forums/thread-vi...=50&start=1

How is my creditability shot to hell, Kachina is sick, its at Taos, Alta is on federal land, MRG did allow snowboards and DV is filled with rich gapers. All of this and the buying minimums are independtly verifiable. Lastly I don't care how anyone gets down the mountain, with the possible exception of those weird spring short skis with breaks in Yurp, as long as you are a nice cool person you are fine with me.

  11. And how is this getting burton an "image" it's a contest to see who can make the best video of poaching a snowboarderless resort... I don't see where you get your ideas from.

Than your an idiot..... if someone has to explain to you how this is all about image than you need to take Marketing 101 again, notice how they deleted 10 pages of negative posts off the Burton message board. Burton is the 600 pound gorilla that swears to you that its a rebel and all that bs.....Burton is the wal mart of snow sports ask any shop people about there policies. If you want one piece of Burton gear you have to take the whole deal crap and all, kind of leaves less room for other brands don't you think.

Regardless I always love the alta "poaches" dumb shits think poaching is coming over to albion base, happens every f**king day. Here is a clue, Alta is on federal land if you want to poach Alta throw sick methods off Supreme lift. Regardless Alta would suck on anything other than split boards since you can't traverse to save your life. Snowbird is the better mountain just skip the whole Alta deal.

MRG was actually one of the first places to allow snowboarding, but it derailed the single chair all the time so they restricted it to the other chairs. Snowboarders rightly bitched about terrain and she said f it and banned them from the mountain all together.

Taos is sick with snow, Kachina is as real as it gets your missing something here.

DV is for rich gapers which can be good fun, also they rarely leave the groomers. If you have ever been to Alta and at Collins on a good day you know how fast the pow gets killed never underestimate a place that holds snow.

Overall the whole thing is just stupid, these resorts aren't restricting snowboards because they have some bs vendetta. The fact is that there is a market out there in that some skiers bought into the whole 90's skier/boarder bs and will go to these places for this reason alone.

What would be crazy interesting is to see the reverse....Brighton would be a good canidate but there entire patrol are skiers, still people would be pissed.

  12. ^^^ oh my god I had a pair of white 1260's from 200 years ago that just desinegrated......the only thing I could figure is that one of the presses line used had/has a bad heating pad so the epoxy inbetween layers never set right.
