  1. Hey folks,

I took another trip out to Blue Mountain today. I got off to a really late start, which threw me off the whole day, but that's not important right now....on to the TR.

It was 10 degrees when I left my house. 12 when I pulled into the Velley lot. Got on the mountain around 9:30ish. No lift line, just a bit of congestion because nobody knows how to count to six there. In retrospect, they probably should have installed a 5 person lift so the guys in the Eagles jackets could just use their hands. So after forcing my way up through the lift line, I decided to start the day off on Challenge. It was awesome. No ice or death cookies. Perfect packed powder. Nice wisps of smokey snow coming off the backs of everyone's skis. I hit Challenge about 5 times straight. The flat light area was still a bit of a problem, but the sun had finally started to hit the skier's right side of the trail. The wind was blowing right up challenge, and at times it was quite the headwind.

After Challenge, I went over to Lazy Mile. It was unbelievably fast today with a nice coating of powder. I'm also really glad that I used my better judgment last night and put some cold temperature wax on. Zoom!!! I did a a bunch of runs alternating Challenge and Lazy before I decided to hit Main Street. It was also super fast today, but as usual, a little choppy on the bottom third of the trail. I cut through the park on the way back to the lift, it was ok, nothing special there.

Challenge was getting really wind blown, so I spend a lot of time skiing Lazy Mile into Falls. Falls was also a little wind blown by mid day, but this really isn't worth mentioning since it's so short. Headwinds were also pretty strong coming down Home Stretch as well.

I got bit by a snowsnake on Lazy Mile, and almost slid into the woods, so I decided to change it up for my next run. I skied Lazy down to the Main Street double and then skied Raceway for the first time this season. Raceway was really fun and there were about 6 other people on the trail when I was going down it. I took raceway into Burma. Ski Patrol had a speed trap set up right after the 1st right turn. They were busy punching holes in two other kids tickets and didn't notice me flying by them. I slowed it down a bit anyway.

Snowmaking was happening on Razor's Edge (upper and lower) but was totally ineffective at building anything resembling a base. Actually, the way the wind was blowing, more of the snow was hitting Dreamweaver. Around 11:30 they turned the guns on upper Razor's. The guns were running on lower Razor's until I left. Paradise had snowmaking going on top to bottom. Snow cats were moving the snow around, leveling it all off. I saw three snow cats working it. There was some snowmaking on Switchback but that was turned off at 10:30. Massive amounts of snowmaking on Sidewinder Park with some whale approaching 6-8 feet deep. I rode the lift with two kids who claimed to poach it. By judging the amount of snowmaking snow they were wearing, I believe them. More snowmaking on the half-pipe and in the tubing park. There was also evidence of grooming on Chute, but still mostly on touched.

I had such a blast today. Everything was so damn fast. It was more crowded than I expected for a Monday. Perhaps the schools are on Christmas break. I skied 22 runs for a total of 25290 feet of vertical. No pictures today, it was too damn cold.

Anyway since I was so late getting started today, I didn't get my Boston Butts in the Orion until 8pm. At 10:30 I'll have to add some charcoal. I'm not expecting them to be done until after12:30am. Then I'll have to transform them into some Christmas PulledPork. Good thing I'm working from home tomorrow.

  2. JFBB gets more people from NY/NJ I'd say.

Not that I want Blue to become more crowded, but I wonder how much that has to do with advertising. Being an official Dirty Jersey representative, most folks I talk to, tell me that they either go to Camelback, JFBB, or MC. One of my co-workers takes his kids tubing at Blue, but that was only on my recommendation. I do want to see Blue do well financially.

  3. Race team kids whoring the trails..stopping in the middle of falls..WTF??? But that's always been the case...

This really needs to be addressed. Skiiers code applies to the racing team as well, even if lift line rules don't. Ya hear me Blue??!!??!! While we're at it, lets address the race team retards doing high speed runs down Burma Road this weekend, practicing skiing on one leg! I'm sure the day tripper noobs appreciate that.

  4. Excellent report Root..I was at work earlier thinking,"Root must be getting wet out there"...then I thought,"Wait a minute..Root is skiing and you're here assisting customers and funeral directors"..:wacko: I had a nice session this evening skiing with Atomic Jeff and AngryHugo..I'll post a report in a little bit after I get my bearings. I stopped into Grumpys BBQ on the way back from Blue and the guy getting next to me was getting married and I bought him a shot and of course had to take a shot as well....Tullimore Dew..well anyway..I'm home safe and feeling the dew..I need to start saying I'm engaged for free shots..lol..

What a great start to the season at Blue and Root's BBQ and ski TRs are great.. :band:clap2

    Time to update my vert..

Thanks. Yeah it was wet, but I was skiing so what does it matter?

  5. THE RESULT IS A POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY SNOW ON FRIDAY INTO FRIDAY

NIGHT. SNOW SHOULD ARRIVE BY DAYBREAK ON FRIDAY. WARMER AIR MOVING

IN ALOFT MIGHT MIX OR CHANGE THE SNOW OVER TO SLEET AND POSSIBLY

EVEN FREEZING RAIN. THIS IS MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN THE LEHIGH

VALLEY AND ALONG THE INTERSTATE 80 CORRIDOR. THE HEAVIEST

PRECIPITATION SHOULD TAPER OFF BY FRIDAY EVENING. THE FRIDAY

AFTERNOON AND EVENING COMMUTE WILL BE DIFFICULT AT BEST.

INITIAL ESTIMATES FOR SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS ARE 6 TO 12

INCHES WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN.

I'm going to go clean my self up now...

  6. I went to AC. Screw skiing in the rain! You blew a vacation day for that?

Ok, well I'm not a fair weather skier. Fantastic skiing today. :downhill: Too bad you missed out on it.

    who blew a vaca day?

I did. I still have 3 more to blow before the end of the year or else I loose them.

    Lost about $300.

Oh yeah, loosing $300 is WAY better than skiing in the rain :banghead:screwy

  7. Visibility was pretty bad, but the good thing was there was nobody there so you didn't really need to worry about hitting anyone.

When I first pulled the pics off the camera I really had to think hard and try to remember where the hell I took them.

  8. Date(s) Skied: 12/17/2008

Resort or Ski Area: Blue Mountain Ski Area

Conditions: Groomed granular, but very soft under the top layer

Trip Report: I had a bit of a rough start this morning, first over slept and then as I was loading up the car, I saw the my wife left her interior light on all night. Fortunatly, I didn't need to jump it, but I had to run back inside to make sure here car would start as she was leaving for Dallas today.

I pulled in the lower parking lot around 8:40 and there were only 5 or 6 cars there. I was able to park right next to the fence post that has all the stickers on it. By time I got booted up on the 6 pack, there was a light mist falling. Lifts were coated with ice in parts. Some of it was over 1/2 inch thick.

First run was Tut's to Lazy Mile to Falls. Super fast and carvable today. Lazy was so sweet man. Best part was I could really lay the speed on because the place was deserted. I looked around for Toast, but since I was late, I couldn't find him.

Second run was Challenge. Eh...nothing special going on there today. Very crispy run of frozen corduroy, again carvable and very fast. I probabily skied Challenge 3 or 4 times to see if softened up at any point. It hadn't.

Twice I had to duck inside when the rain was really coming down, which was ok by me to dry off a little bit.

Rest of the day I was lapping Lazy Mile. Super sweet today. I never made it over to Main Street or Burma. For my last two runs, the clouds finally lifted and visability was much improved. On a side note, they were exercising the quad lift today. Getting ready to open Paradise maybe??? As I was leaving, the sun came out and there were maybe 25 cars in the lot.

Total for today was 15 runs for a total of 16,496 vertical feet. I had an awesome time. I'm glad I took a vacation day today. I didn't take many pictures because I wound up putting my camera in my pack as not to get it wet. Here's four though. Enjoy!

  9. I'll be there after work...I'm hoping it stays all snow but I'm pretty certain it will be raining in the AM..I hope I'm wrong..anyway you'll be skiing instead of working..

I should be on the snow by 4ish....I've got an exam and then my office xmas party :)

I'll be long gone by the time you guys show up.

  10. Since we're getting a decent snowfall, I thought I'd post up a roll call thread for tomorrow. I'll be there as early as I can, depending on the roads.

I think that Toast is going, anyone else going to help us break in some sweet Pocono powder?

  11. We stayed at The Inn of the Six Mountains and it was a crap hole. Hopefully The Killington Grand will be better. Why can't VT resorts be better?

BTW at 30 the hair and balls are still fine. 40 however is a different story. Anyway what's so bad about a little sag? At least as a guy you can kinda get away with it.

Really, cause I've stayed at The Inn of Six Mountains 3 years ago, and found it pretty nice. Well, the pool was a little weird, but the hot tub and bar worked well. Breakfast was pretty decent also. Restaurant was ok, there are better places on the road.
