  2. They Just Now Up and Closed for the Season! Bummer!
  3. Looks like Sat. 3/29/14 is Elks last day - from their ski conditions page" "March 29 will be the last day of the 2013/2014 Season!"
  4. Camelback offering a free Camel Card to passholders from other mountains, starting March 3. First lift ticket is free. http://skicamelback.com/ski-areas-pa.aspx#trader
  5. First - Greek Peak was recently sold at a bankruptcy auction. The new owners are 2 younger (40's) gentlemen form Elmira NY. One owns Chemung Supply company and the other owns 4 businesses. They picked up everything - The entire ski area, the adventure center (mountain coaster, zip lines, tubing center, lodge building), Hope Lake Lodge/waterpark and land (HLL is only a few years old and cost like 34 million to build, and 25 acres on which a golf course could be built, and several condos/townhouses directly across the street from the ski area. They are long time Greek skiers and have a condo there. They have young kids that ski. Anyway they only will pay a total of 7.5 million for everything - bid was for 6.75 million. (second highest bidder was a Hotel owning entity out of Canada and 3rd highest was a construction - road building company from Towanda Pa, Mr. Dirt). (speculation was that a minimum bid of 12 million would be required and everything would probably go for about 25 million). So 6.75 million is almost a steal. The Bankruptcy Judge from Syracuse and the FDIC both approved this sale. Seasons passes for next year are only $299 if bought before April 21. So skied Greek on Sat. 4/6 from 10:00 til closing, which was 6pm. Upon arriving, I ran into Camo-John (he always wears camo pants skiing), and I asked him if the base had softened up yet and he said yes. Then I asked him if he was coming back tomorrow (Sunday), and he said "THEY ARE SAYING THEY WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW BECAUSE OF THE FORECASTED RAIN!) Greek says they will try to open on Sat. 4/13 - seems unlikely, with next weeks weather forecast. Anyways skiing was GREAT, warm, no clouds, sun pounding down. Here are a few pics:
  6. Nice report. Sounds like great skiing. I think you may be skiing with Cornhead and Scotty. I live near Cornhead and have skied with him at Greek Peak, Elk (last year), Plattekill (last year) and at Snow Ridge. He tends to ski fairly FAST. I think those two are characters... you sound like a nice guy.
  7. Today is Thurs. 3/21/13. On the front page of Elk's website, it states that they are open daily, through Friday March 29th, from 8:30 till 4:30.
  8. I got out my calculator. Seeing as how Elk opened on Dec. 18th - as of March 24 Sun. they will have in 97 days. So if my calculations are correct Elk will have to go to Wed. 3/27/13 to reach 100 days open.
  9. Was wondering when Elk might close. Seems like Sun. 3/24 maybe. But if the 100 day guarantee for seasons passholders hasn't been met they may go a little longer. So does anybody know the date when 100 days open is complete? (Greek Peak as of Fri. 3/15 was on day number 86 and Sun. 3/24 would be day number 95)
  10. On Sat. March 23rd, season passholders from other ski areas can get a free lift ticket to Plattekill in the Catskill Mtns. This is a great deal. I did it last year and it was great. From the Platekill website: http://plattekill.com/events/winter-events-calendar March 23 - Season Passholder Day - FREE lift ticket with a season pass from any other mtn!

    Alien pass

http://www.skicamelback.com/Tickets-and-Passes/Discount-Ticket-Offers.aspx Had trouble finding the Alien pass info. on their website, finally found it, by searching the net.
  12. So - checked out Sno's facebook page and some dude is asking if it's true that they are closing for the season on Feb. 28th. GEEZ!
  13. Could some of you guys tell me how Sno compares to Elk Mtn.? The closest ski areas to me are: Greek Peak - 34 miles (40 minutes). Elk - 45 miles (50 minutes). Sno Mtn. 57-60 miles (probably about an hour). If Sno's trails and skiing are on a comparable level to Elk, Maybe I should try to check it out on one of those $10 Tuesdays. I always buy a seasons pass to Greek Peak but they are also in bankruptcy now and the FDIC told them to try and find a buyer.... rumors have it that Jay Peak, Windham and Bristol may be interested in buying and a few others. Anyways the news articles way back said Greek was 36 million in debt, but the actual figure seems to be 50 million - WOW!! All this debt is from building a huge Hotel - Water Park complex and an Adventure center with a mountain coaster, Zip lines, and year round tubing center geared mostly at 14 year olds.
  14. Never skied Sno Mountain. My question is - on those non-holiday $10 Tuesdays, is the whole mountain open or do they not run some of the lifts therefore limiting terrain on a typical Tues.?
  15. Small print says not good on holidays. They have Tues. 2/19/13 listed as a holiday period - presidents week.
  16. GSS, do you have a pair of Line, Sir Francis Bacons? I understand they don't have any metal in them... I am a cruiser and wonder if they are stable at fast speeds with no layer of metal. I demoed the Line Prophet 100's and the newer 98's and they both have the layer of metal and are very stable at high speeds.
  17. We originally were either going to go to Hunter or Plattekill on Fri. I think if we went to Hunter they would have had their snowmaking system blasting away. I imagine on a cold day it would not have been enjoyable to get blasted in the face with those machine made snow crystals. It was snowing quite hard on the drive up, but just before we got there it cleared up and the sun came out for the day. Then 30 minutes after we left it was snowing again. This little Snowridge is just great if you can hit it after a good dumping of lake effects snow.
  18. 2nd group of pics: Don't know why they came out so small on this forum Groomer, grooming a pre-beginner slope near the base lodge. We thought it was a rope tow, but it is a handle tow on a cable. We tried the handle tow at the end of the day, for kicks. You just ski up to it with your skis parallel to the running cable and grab the handle. My friend had his skis facing across the cable and grabbed the handle, he was yanked right over hard onto his side. lol
  19. Here are 1st group of pics: Cornhead
  20. I guess, I have to upload my photos to photobucket so that I can get an URL designation for them then put them up.. will take a few minutes.
  21. I was skiing the trees, caught an edge and bounced off a tree... said never again, don't want to end up badly injured or like Sony Bono RIP.
  22. Oh I forgot, there is both in and out of bounds tree skiing there. (I don't ski the trees). Here is a trip report from NY ski blog which shows the tree skiing: http://forum.nyskiblog.com/Snow-Ridge-1-5-13-tp4023028.html;cid=1360004441055-130
  23. The thing is that, this week would not be the best timing for me to do a Free GSS thread on Alp. Zone, because that Nick guy is busy with his Alpine Zone sumitt at Sugarloaf Maine this coming weekend. My friend Cornhead is going to that. So I could do a Free GSS thread next week or the week after - better timing. Your - What are you eating for lunch today??? thread is still going from 2007.
  24. I noticed that you sneak in there once in a blue moon with a user name like "dougie or douglas" or something.
  25. Cornhead and I skied Snowridge on Fri 2/1. Snowridge is located in Turin NY on the Tug Hill Plateau about 1.5 hours northeast of Syracuse NY. They often get decent dumpings of Lake effects snow off of Lake Ontario. Took about 3 hrs. from Binghamton. Snowed hard from Syracuse to Turin where Snowridge is located. While on the short stretch of NY Thruway saw a car in the opposite lanes go into a massive power slide and slide down into the median. Looked like the guy may have been able to drive it out. Went through Rome NY and Booneville. Seems like lots of snowmobiles in Booneville. Got at Snowridge about 9:10 am and they opened the base lodge at 9:30. Lifts start at 10 am on weekdays. If you present a seasons pass from a New York ski area you get a lift ticket for $15. (normal rate for a weekday is $21 for 6 hours and $37 for a weekend ticket). They had 13" of fresh fluffy powder. Takes 5 minutes up the lift and about 2 minutes down the 500 ft. vertical. Did a lot of runs. Cornhead was talking to a family that came down from Canada at lunch break. Also talked to a guy from Albany who tries to ski Snowridge after they get a dumping of lake effect snow from Lake Ontario. Couldn't get the photos to work so here is a link to my post in Alpine Zone: http://forums.alpinezone.com/showthread.php/118339-Snowridge-Fri-2-1-13 If you can not see the photos try this report from New York Ski Blog: http://forum.nyskiblog.com/Snowridge-Fri-2-1-13-tp4024284.html;cid=1360004441055-130
