I was just reading my friend's weather update on his weather blog. (the dude is really into this stuff and usually accurate) Well to add to my snowstorm comment above. (its kind of a cross post between the other condtion reports but this seems important enough) ***UPDATE 02/09/07 1430*** Well, FULL WEENIE MODE has been reached. After reviewing the major model noontime runs, my pulse went from a nice resting rate of 76 to I am sure triple digits. ALL of the major models, and even some of the more obscure models show a storm. Not just A storm, but a storm with a shitload of precipitation. Now, I am not saying that this is going to be the outcome, but the models and their outputs are as follows.....GFS (American Model) trended further north, puts us in significant snows 6"+. The Canadian Model absolutly destroys us, dropping between 2 and 3 feet....YEAH! And now, the latest major model out is the European model. I had wrote this morning about how the run last night was so far south, well, needless to say, it has now trended with the other models and destroys us as well......1-3 feet. Also, one of the funnier things I looked at today was at a model that historically is not that reliable, the JMA (Japenese model). This model has never really been that great, but back in 2003, this model was the first to predict the Presidents Day storm from 7 days out and never waivered.......and now, this model has the same track as the Canadian model and the Euro model. There is a saying too, that when all the foreign models agree, LOOK OUT! We have struck that period and we are now looking at a VERY SIGNIFICANT THREAT for MONDAY, TUESDAY and into WEDNESDAY....yes, this could actually be a three day event!!!!!!!!! I dont want to have my panzy meter fully pegged, but I will tell you all, this is the most excited I have been in a while for snow.......this very well could turn this winter into a very memorable winter. if things keep up, and the models are showing the same outcome Sunday Morning, I will officially be HONKING MAJOR STORM!!!! Until then, I am trying to control myself and keep composure. Wait till you watch the news tonight, they will be honking big time!!!! You heard it here first!!!!!!! Stay tuned.....I will continue to monitor the situation!!!!!!

One of my friends who is really into this wether stuff wrote the following today at 230 p.m. What he wrote was for Central Jersey/Trenton. Usualy the Poconos get a good one from stuff like this too. I'll have to ask him to write a Pocono update for his blog. He has been talking about this storm for about a week now. ***UPDATE 02/09/07 1430*** Well, FULL WEENIE MODE has been reached. I was there all day today and the conditions were excellent especially between 12 and 4 when the sun was out and warmed things up a little. Hopfully this storm (or 2) develops next week to make things even better.

At least 3" when I left last night at 7ish It was snowing hard when I left so maybe they got a total of 5" at the top. ....and I should have stayed because everyone was driving like a bunch of idiots last night. Went home the "back" exit at CB and a few people were driving crazy on there and then when I got down by Barley Creek there was one car off the roadway. Plus some people could not see the lines on the road or felt more secure driving on my side of the roadway and in my lane.
-
On my way home last night there were a whole bunch of people in there doing stuff, so it looked open. They have to bring this stuff down off the hill so other people can watch it. (non-park pass holders and the like) So for now it does seem like a start having this kind of stuff at CB, so go with it and it will get better.
-
This could turn into a good thing, my pass number last week was in the #500 range. (not sure if they started with #1 or not) But if they handed 500 since last week then another 500 that would be pretty cool. (I would imagine if they order something they probably ordered in 1,000 quantities) By knowing what kind of market there is out there for terrain parks and the like, maybe they will invest a lot more money into that area of the mountain in the future. I still think that whole Glen lift area should be fenced off with one access gate for when the Glen chair is not turning. Increase the size of the half pipe, with walls a little taller and steeper. Shut the area off at near east and send non-terrain park types down raceway, close Upper Moores Ramble and make that a terain park too. To access the terrain park you would need to ride the Glen lift and have to show a park pass to even ride that chair. Also allow one access gate at the top of the terrain park by the 1/2 pipe so you could access the entire park from that area when the Glen chair is not running.

A lot bigger than Camelback's old standards. Took a cruise by the park today and it really looks good. Still working on setting stuff up and should be done by morning.

Only you would be able to find that on the Internet.

Yea those guys are so "selfish", ski patrollers pay for their own training and training materials, pay $56. for "membership" each year, they have to buy their own backpacks and stock them with their own supplies, they have to buy their own jacket and other gear. Spend 4 months in class for initial EMS training (about 120+ hours same as EMT), an 8 hour refresher each year for EMS, and another 8 hour day each year for lift evac and mountain operations, for the new people another month or so depending on how good you are with toboggans and skiing/snowboarding level. All that for some free skiing while your patrolling or a pass for one of your friends, family members or for a day when your not patrolling. The minimum time you must put in each year is 13 days and one night a week. Sounds like a great deal to me it would probably be cheaper and easier to just get a season pass rather than patrol. People who patrol don't do it for the money, they do it because they like it.
-
Another positive of snowboarding boots while patrolling. Snowboarders wear comfortable boots and can stay in their boots all day. Many skiers ski for a few hours and take their boots off and walk around in street shoes for a break or if they have patrol room duties. Having your boots on all the time your always ready to respond to a call. Running the toboggan is probably about 5% of what a patroller does. I even drive the truck and snowmobiles without having to switch boots.
-
Skiing is so much easier for getting around and remaining in control which is what patrollers need to do. ----------- Snowboarders have same or more control especially on the steeps. Snowboarders also have better traction on their boots and don't slip around while not snowboarding. (moving patients, lift-evac, etc.) There is a lot more to ski/snowboard patrolling than running toboggans. Flats are a pain in the ass for everyone, skiers and boarders. If you get the same medical care and everything else with snowboarders as skiers why does it really matter? Ask the person on the slope who is injured and I bet they don't care as long as someone shows up. Seems like a lot of people on here have an opinion on this subject of who has more control and getting around but those same critics have never done the job or even pulled a toboggan.
-
I hate when people get off the lift then hang out right in front of the unloading area for a good 5 or 10 minutes and chat about what trail to go down next.
-
I figured it was someone else because of the hat and jacket and I know what BB was doin today.
-
and the patroler was better than 90% of the people at cb. Hey Atomic I wonder who that was?
-
Is that BB in the pipe on the tellis?
-
But IF you could do both equally - I think 90% of the time you would want to ski instead of snowboard on the days you are patrolling. I would rather patrol on a board than on skis. Yes I ski and board.
-
If snowboard patrollers are so "awful" maybe you should just go places that don't allow snowboard patrollers. (So stay away from Blue, CB, Hunter and Killington to name a few that do allow it) Maybe you'll feel safer and more secure at Deer Valley, Taos, Alta or Mad River Glen where they don't allow snowboarding at all. If you ever crack your head open and a snowboard patroller just happens to show up first, tell them you don't want help from a snowboarder and you'll wait for the next available patroller on skis. 90% of resorts will not hire snowboarders for patrol duties. I wonder why that is? Discrimination

Power failure strands Hidden Valley skiers on chairlifts
mtnbiker99x replied to mtnbiker99x's topic in General Chat
It took almost an hour to get back up generators working....that is pretty sorry. I would rather rope down, its not that bad. -
From http://www.nj.com Power failure strands Hidden Valley skiers on chairlifts A power outage in Sussex County this afternoon left several hundred skiers and snowboarders stranded on chairlifts at Hidden Valley Resort in Vernon, where they dangled in frigid gusts for roughly an hour, officials said. A main power line snapped at about 1:35 p.m. when high winds knocked over a large dead tree, said Jim Siglin, a spokesman for Sussex Rural Electric Cooperative. Using back-up generators, Hidden Valley officials were able to restart the chairlifts by about 2:30 p.m., said Roni Mattiello, the resort's snow sports director. While the skiers and snowboarders - between 200 and 300 of them - were stranded, temperatures hovered around 27 degrees, and winds gusted up to 25 mph, leaving a wind-chill of 16 degree, according to the National Weather Service. Sussex Rural Electric Cooperative had power restored by 2:45, Siglin said. Contributed by Joe Ryan

I was not there today so I can't say for sure but my guess would be that they are probably recovering and blowing the snow pretty deep so there is no chance of it getting thin if we run into weather again. Then they will expand to the east side and open additional stuff. That's just my guess. On the CB/Blue war, I like CB's set up a lot better than Blue. I do like 1 or 2 of Blue's trails but the rest are all the same PA trails. But all this Blue/CB crap has been debated to death. If you like Blue go to Blue, if you like BC go to BC, and if you like CB go to CB, its easy as that. I just accept PA mountains as they are and if I want a better ride I head north to NY or VT or out west and avoid PA.

Forgot to mention that I have seen Camelback's security in action and they are pretty good at getting some of the crooks. Still there are a number of boards that walk away from any mountain that you go to and you should still lock your board down with a high quality lock. I mentioned in a thread last year that I use the Kryptonite one, seems to be thicker and harder to cut than some of the chepo locks out there.
-
At CB I don't let the board out of my sight and if I do its locked down. About 6 years ago my friend had a board stolen at MC then they tried to hock it at The Loft. The guys from The Loft told the kids to leave the boards and come back in an hour to pick up their money. Well when they returned the State Police were waiting for them. Luckily my friend recorded the serial number and had a good description of the board. The kids were charged and we had to stop at the police station the following week to get his board back. So where ever you go lock it down with a good cable, not the light ones you can clip with cutting pliers.

"Radar Love" coming to a mountain near you
mtnbiker99x replied to mtnbiker99x's topic in General Chat
At CB I haven't seen any Rangers on black trails (last year or year before) enforcing anything except people that should not be on there. I seen rangers get on people that are on their 1st day of skis trying the blacks with the ever familair look--"snowplow of death" I have seen rangers get after people flying down crowded green trails. On the black and blue trails I have not seen anything like what is talked about. Maybe things are diffrent at Blue or some of the other mountains. -
That sounds cool how much is the discount? and is it limited to just Camelback or all season passes? Never been to Jay but I hear its worth it.
