Rummy, is there a picnic area/fire pit off the beaten path at Elk or am I remembering that incorrectly? Near the upper parking lot? Yes .. about the middle of the West slope, skiers left. Locals call it the halfway house. It can be accessed from the upper lot, but getting there is tricky and you cannot park there.
