Widow all the way to Midway?  Either way i will take it, but i will be impressed if its to Midway.

I do feel like they are throttling back the snowmaking at times, whether its their call or not.  It might be some KSL influence too.  And it could be directly proportional as to how many cars are parked in the paid parking.

All the way to midway, when I rode the quad nmdw didn't have anything but maybe I missed a whale up top

They didn't have anything going earlier when I checked, now just ambiance guns going.

Why aren't they going hard on Challenge and/or Switch?

They need to make snow while the temps are down, not piss them away!

Rode today from 905 to 11, dudes on the lift said Blue doesn't want to pay the day rate. Seems dumb to me but who knows, they did turn the yellow fans on at 1030 pretty much everywhere.

Snow was not as good today, too much blowing made for some hard stuff and cookies.  Upper main was glacial from the start but about 1/3 down it went to a carpet. Lazy and dis continue to be very good. They opened Widow though it was a hilarious field of cookies and glacial.

Coming Soon was rotd as the headwall was ratty but had perfect grip to let them go.  They were working on pushing out razors and had come around pushed out but not open. Someone on the lift said switch is next but take that with a big grain of salt.

Good day and with some natural tomorrow am could be very good.....now all I have to do is get out of work

I've long heard he's an agile mofo, this proves it.

If I remember right he was the only one with game,  little nick told me was full play on player.

Many moons ago I saw Doug work his magic at a bar in kop, its just like skiing if you underestimate him its to your own disadvantage.

The snow was amazing with the full sunlight. Hump and Asp felt like western groomers at times. 10/10, would recommend for sick turns.

Damn, I figured today would be perfect after it got more time and another groom. It's been a bit since I've been there but the little bit steep one skiers right is le tits when the snow is good.

  5. Fucking stoke !

I'll preface this by saying for the boarders I'm sorry they don't let you ride there, to be fair alot of the stuff worth skiing would suck on a board but still.

I love to ask people what they think about Alta because it's the fastest question to know what they are all about.

DV peeps for the most part don't like Alta, the other day when they had a 4hr redsnake up LCC all the ikons went to the bird which in some ways is a more challenging mtn but critically more comfortable. (Tram not included )

Alta is for skiers, actual skiing, not taking pictures for the gram in a 4k Goldberg, you can get beer and shit but they don't have signature cocktails. There is no spa or 100000 endless real estate scams. All of the good shit you gotta work to get their and nobody is going to help you find it. The true Alta peeps are god damn Billy goats, a 85 year old dude will make you reconsider how good of a skier you think you are as he's faster on the traverse and downhill.

It's insanely beautiful, the opposite of telluride/Silverton which I still say is number one in the lower 48 but you get up on high rustler and sup is all big and gnarly in your face, the sun is going down behind the mtns perfect picture frame view all the way down to the valley.

You either get it or you don't and every true skier, the givers, the adventurers get it........ the nipple deep diamond dust that falls out of the sky seemingly constantly doesn't hurt but they are right it has a soul in an increasingly soulless ski industry.

Here is a crazy idea... Maybe they could turn the lights off after close to save a few pennies.

Insurance ? They turn them off right at 7am no matter what they are doing which says to me insurance said keep the lights on until daybreak and we'll take x off your policy.

As much as we complain about the price of electric, its pretty affordable in this area.  if you look around like out west, it might be almost double what we pay.  When i bought my house in the Poconos, i was amazed at how cheap PPL was.  its caught up to Peco a little these days, but still cheaper.

Delmarva Power is considerably higher in a tiny, completely flat state that almost always has better weather. We are lucky in that we have a shit ton of installed capacity, we also produce alot PA is second to Illinois if I'm not mistaken.

Some places out west are insane and TX is the absolute dumbest, worst system ever invented. It's like 3 to 4 cents more expensive than PA and it doesn't even work.

  10. Before I forget Lower Mount Bethel which is a 600mw NG plant above Easton I know for a fact is all outside.  Rf sends teams to plants all year to inspect and assist with winterizing the plant and I know they went to LMB specifically to help them get their shit together.

Martin's creek is also old as shit and had a fire a year or so back but that's 1700mw that is considerably less reliable when it's cold.

BEC is pretty new and as far as I know is good during the cold.

Blowing at JF and Montage as well, but just because they are, doesnt mean it isnt a PPL thing.  it could be a Palmerton grid thing, or just a straight up Palmerton thing.  If the grid around Blue is overloaded with Palmerainians charging up their Teslas, and electric heat, they will shut down or fav mountain.  Who knows, maybe electricity has trouble getting over the mountain when its cold.

The grid at total must be balanced, Palmerton isn't alone, all of ec up into Canada is all the same grid. In an overall sense it's kwh in vs out that 31 agencies in six regional entities mange.

For us the regional agency is Reliability First for NERC, basically after the big nyc blackout in the 80s the connected everything in the EC and appointed load balancers so it couldn't happen again.

Everyone here is also PJM so it's probably a mix of rates and capacity. Basically they could produce more juice but nobody wants to pay x per kwh so they don't produce.

So during the fracking run up basically all the drilling companies had to be producing and finding new plays at all times due to their high use of credit. This meant no matter the price they kept pumping out NG, the price got so low Limerick power station could barely compete on price in PJM and bam 1000mw is offline.

The other big one is retirement of something like 6gw in the MISO district which is the Midwest. Again we all have to be balanced out so overall for 2022 we had a 17.6gw shortfall which is huge.  Nerc says since 2021 winter the reserve margin has fallen by 6 or 7% although installed capacity is 3x the reserve requirement.

What does that all mean ? Basically the Midwest is low on output so particularly when load is high we send them juice, up to 13k GW. Additonally because they cant generate enough they purchased interconnect agreements which also limits the total number out there across all districts. Now we can produce mad electricity, plenty for everyone but and this is key not at the prices PJM wants to role at so instead they take the big loads offline until nighttime when the load generally drops.

Lastly a shit ton of plants aren't winterized, there a mad plants were the boiler, turbine generator enclosures are exposed to the weather. Additionally a lot of valves, gages, instruments that are necessary for running the until aren't protected at all. The big recommendation is for enclosures and wind breaks.

If you want more info read this, particularly pages 9, 12 and 24 - https://www.rfirst.org/resource-center/2023-01-23-winter-and-long-term-reliability-assessment-presentation/

  12. I got fucked by work but could get an hour in,  like Ridge said best snow of the year so far. First run down upper main was a carpet of perfection and everything except for a few glacial spots skied well.

A little weirdly busy but the best is seeing big ass whales everywhere.  They blown on rasins forever and finally now it's getting somewhere. Should be a really good weekend on tap.

  13. It was a good day but snow definitely took a dive after yesterday's hero snow. First run down main there was so much debris and the right side was pretty uneven.

Lazy was the best run again but suffered the same fate as dis, with all the people at highly variable speed if you chose the wrong school of fish you were absolutely closed out.

Super good to see them pound razors so that can be done with. Forecast looks to be Gucci Gold so should be a dope week coming up.

Had to stop at the store on the way home, people were losing their minds on the wind but I think it's kinda fun to see. My front door seal is whistling Dixie which it's never done before.

Had a excellent session at Blue The True today!  Arrived around 8:30 to be pleasantly suprised by a fairly empty lot.  I figured the rain would keep people from coming early and it did.  My car read 49 which was also suprising as the forecast I saw said upper 30 or low 40s at opening time.  @Johnny Law was in the house as I spotted him on Lazy and gave him a pound in the lift line from the VIP passholder side of the fence. 🤣 Snow was exactly as you would expect wet but still fast.  Spent most of the day lapping lazy, or main to the park finished off on Paradise.  Things are getting thin in spots but that doesnt matter with the snowmaking that shall go down this week.

    20240113_095641.jpg

Are you a front side parker ? I keep my eye out for anyone I know but even when I see you around I couldn't figure out if you were coming out up at the top lot or what.

  15. Super super good day to be out and about. One of the best snow conditions in my opinion, main first thing was arc arc arc arc and lazy was maybe even better and held up nicely.  Dis is dis its good but that run out is getting spicy for the beginners which is the cherry on top.

Parking lot was tip top, beer Jesus had zombie dust which is like an instant flashback to my early craft beer days and lo and behold a CBI trip was in order.

The juggy maiden has long since moved on to the glitter and glam of the west end saloon but it was most nice to get back in their with even better company.

I cannot fathom how there is a way in which tomorrow isn't mad brick, all the semis were really struggling on my way home so super glad to make the most of today.

Always had a great view of them from chair 6. That was as close as I would want to get.

Climbing Mt Marcy with a full pack on was one of the stupider things I’ve done.

Marcy is amazing, particularly for an EC mtn it feels big. In all the times we tried the conditions were never good enough to ski it from the top. The ski trail was super cool but always wanted to ski off the back, I think it's called lions head area but I'd have to get my green book out.

Whiteface? Was he going to run the slides? Have you run them? Think a beacon is my son’s next bday present.

Yes and some of the ones in the high peaks, many moons ago there was a TR from Peggy O

Saw a boomer being loaded into the ambulance near the patrol shack when I quit today about 11. Bunch of concerned boomers looking on. Don’t know if it was one of the geezer regulars or a club.

Oh fuck, I saw them bring in the ambulances and I didn't see BFG's crew at all but hope those dudes are good, they are good people.
