I like Gore. Definitely on par with S VT. Whiteface (although not even close to where you were looking to go originally) is my favorite in the East. You and your wife should head up to Lake Placid ski during the day, enjoy the night life in town. Have a good time. It's far from the Catskills but worth it.

I've never had a bad day at Elk. It's fun. It's the references to Vermont, the high ticket prices and the signs that say "ski fast or lose pass" and "no tree skiing" that kill it for me.
