EdBacon Posted February 24 Author Report Posted February 24 Fun morning at BC. Pretty hard underneath but not too fast. That 4 or 5 inches of snow helped the surface out which otherwise is granular from all the melt and refreeze. All the guns are still hooked up. Maybe they’ll keep resurfacing through the week. Icecoast Posted February 25 Report Posted February 25 Just got a notice about their spring sale $132 for three lift tickets. if you buy you can deduct 132 from your season pass purchase for next season season passes for next year go on sale on 4/1 for $509 (377 if you bought the 3 spring tickets) Tough sell when montage is 399 for rest of this year and next, but I would probably spend much more than 100 in gas if I went to montage vs Bear.

Not sure where you're coming from, but the distance alone is more than worth it imo. $400 for Montage is great but coming out of the Philly metro you'll ski a lot less days when you have a two hour drive one way. BC is smaller, yeah but its maybe an hour drive and its worth it to get more days in for me. Plus with the Indy add on I can still get to Montage a couple times if I want anyway. I’m right across the river from Philly. Not Camden but, to quote Sarah Palin, “ I can see Philly from my house” bears climate worries me a bit. Again, I am getting more days on the snow at bear than if I was doubling the commute so the value works out. If we have a lean year it’s gonna affect everyone. 1
EdBacon Posted February 28 Author Report Posted February 28 Nice and warm. Soft spring conditions. Big crowd today and long lines. They only had B lift running in front. I left around noon and they were starting up A lift. Don't think they anticipated so many people today. Upper lot was filling up. Drove home with the windows down. 2

Mixilplix Posted March 14 Report Posted March 14 Couldn't make Blue this morning due to some family business, so bopped over to BC for there closing. Just the park and one other run open. Beginner chair trail was also open. Conditions were pretty good with a sorta creamy top layer. Rode for about an hour or so then called it. Full sun and blue skies made it enjoyable.. 7

Maybe use another day at Montage next weekend and then pay for some spring riding at CBK if they make it into April. Edited March 16 by EdBacon
Kyle Posted March 16 Report Posted March 16 Bear has always shot themselves in the foot with the snowmobile races, especially in years with extended winters. Not much they can do about it, but with the upcoming weather they likely could’ve made it another weekend. Those races killlll the snowpack on Kodiak.

I can't remember a season they stayed open longer than the third week of March. Maybe there was a year where they opened again on the last weekend in March but its just never been in their gameplan to stay open longer. Its rare that they have the conditions for it though so it just may not figure into their calculus for scheduling things late season.

Back when I was at KU, 2011ish they had a few seasons with late cold and ended up closing the day before the snowmobile races and never opened back up, even though they had enough coverage to Open another weekend or two. granted, at this point in the season you’re operating on a daily loss essentially as 95% of the people out on the hill are passholders but they have definately had some seasons they closed early and could have pushed it out a bit.

The operating culture was always to assume you were at a disadvantage given their location and try and meet the holiday rushes. After that fell off there was never any push for spring riding. Some mountains just have that culture of pushing the season and bc never did that I remember. It’s a shame because they have an advanced snowmaking system now and they probably could get an extra week or two. I suppose it’s a lot of cost though for an extra couple weeks just for the PR.

Do people tailgate at Bear creek? I only skied there once in 1995 when it was Doe mountain. 1
