Bear Creek and Chapter 12

Hey I don't know if this is true I was told by the owner of my shop today that bear creek filed for chapter 12 (bankruptcy?) and I was wondering if anyone has seen or heard anything about this true or false; Mark do you have anything for me on this little bit of information?

I highly doubt they would be in bankruptcy. Maybe when they were closed for a month. But with this cold weather, it will attract ALOT of people and it will be good income for the next month or so.

too bad income for one month doesnt make up for being closed for the busiest month of the season... you shouldn't highly doubt anything unless you know how much they actually lost.

I completely agree with you, toast. Also what makes me a little suspicious is the fact that the last few years have not been good weather wise. They had been forced to close down several times during the season because of the weather. They lost customers each day they were closed. This year without a doubt, was by far the worst.

I hope it isn't true, but its not impossible. I know last time people brought up how they were owned by a large company. I don't think that really matters with the loss of not being open long this year, and the last few years they had to close down throughout the season. They maybe owned by a large company, but thats irrelevant because you can only go so many times before it catches up to you. They can't afford to keep shelling out money everytime mother nature doesn't cooperate.

like i said before... while they were closed they kept employees busy by letting them start ripping down the brand new lift and knocking down the brand knew hotel. tell that crazy shop guy to check the damn webcam. they already started the housing development over on timberline.

bankruptcy doesnt necessarily mean you go out of business. donald trump files bankruptcy pretty much every year so he doesnt have to pay alimony to his 20 bitches and doesnt have to worry about if his casino is a loss.

I know how the rumor mill works and we have heard this from so many sources including a students in Quakertown that tell us their teacher has an entire unit based on the fact that Bear Creek is bankrupt. It is never a good thing to lose money but we are a far cry from going bankrupt.

It is true that the revenue we have lost so far this season will likely never be recovered. Having said that, the owner is investing another $20 million in more hotel rooms and banquet facilities, a day spa and another restaurant and bar. We are all working on researching summer activities to drive more off-season revenue in the event we face another year like this one. Our business plan is to cover all annual operating expenses with non-ski revenue by the end of 2008. Skiing and Riding will then be pure profit.

Before the rumor spreaders start twisting this message and spreading a new rumor that we are abandoning skiing and riding altogether, let me just say that we had a meeting, including the owner, on Wednesday to discuss improvements to the snowmaking system to deal specifically with years like this one. There are not many resorts I know of that are willing to build out a snowmaking system to deal with a weather pattern you see maybe 2% of all winters.

The plan now is to double our pumping capacity, nearly double water storage and increase our gun count by nearly 20%. In addition, we will be implementing cooling strategies for our two primary ponds. Going into the meeting we tasked the guys at SMI and Ratnik with a goal of opening the entire resort with the exception of the pipe and tubing in 40 hours. They came back saying that is impossible but we can accomplish that goal in 60 to 70 hours at 28F wet bulb, the highest wet bulb that allows snowmaking production.

A lot of the planning and preparation for the expansions had already occurred internally. We have the permits in hand for the pond enlargement, the design for the new pumping facility is 95% complete and 1/2 the pipeline changes were made this summer. We will be receiving a new gun layout that involves adding guns and repositioning a few existing guns by Feb. 15th.

As you can see, these actions are not indicative of a resort that has filed for bankruptcy. Now it is up to you guys to spread the good word!

Mark if you really want to boost non winter revenue i think you guys should look into getting snow flex. I realize that it would be very expensive to put somthing liek this in, but think abou the revenue that would be generated... People would come from 3- 4 states away just to rdie the snow flex and while their here they would be staying in your hotel and eating at your restaurants. I guarantee you it would be crowded almost every day, and then during the winterr you could just blow right on top of it. Im not sure but i think this would be the first of its kinda in the united states as well.. just a suggestion

We are investigating a lot of options, one being a summer terrain park using snowflex. The downside is you can not groom on top of snowflex so it would have to be a slope that is not covered in snow in the winter. We should have an idea of the options we are pursuing in the next 4 to 6 weeks.

That is a great idea. I vote for having the snowflex park offsite though. I know a great place in North Coventry.

Obviously, a firm believer in the "it takes money to make money" theory.

Mark,

How about a Mountain Creek/Diablo Freeride park like Freeride park. run the Quad, shuttle mountain bikers and build stunts. I know a ton of people from the NE Philly region buying passes to Mountain Creek. I'd be much happier driving to Bear Creek then hauling my crap up into jersey.

But it'd have to be big from the get go or it would never make it. You won't get the revenue you need to sustain it by just opening the left and cleaning up the single track, the freeride park is the key.

downhill dave? hey i think i met you at steel city sometime...

for how many people showed up for the DH race at bear, even though most of us knew the course was lame, raced to have a good time and it proved support for bear creek. the place has sweet ass potential for huge stuff. the cross country loop isn't cuttin it for people who want to bomb down the hill. considering lehigh is only 20 mins away and the scene is bootilicious mudda fuggin crazy over there with south moutain crew! shakin their ass and showin people what's up, i'm sure people would be willin' to drive over for some liftie access. especially if they hire a liftie crew of ex-miss americas and maxim models wearing bikinis and rollin around in kiddie pools full of jello. def. attract the crowds.

good ol' business degree from MOCO, know how to make da dubs

You start drinkin' early tonight Boyer?

I would love a freeride park closer than Mt. Creek. There is ENORMOUS potential in this. I even know a shop that would be a huge sponsor. Just PLEASE don't build a waterpark. Keep your mountain outdoor sports oriented...
