Will they blow snow???

The upcoming forecast looks good and the 15 day accuweather forecast has cold temps at night :rock . This Sat and Sun it's supposed to be 26 at Lake Harmony at night, and on Mon. it's supposed to get down to 28. Also, lows are listed below freezing from Nov.1 on, according to accuweather. If JFBB is serious about a Thanksgiving opening, this might be the time to take advantage of the temps. Highs are listed in the mid 40's, which man made snow can last through.

if JFBB is serious about shooting for thanksgiving, which they appear to be, they will blow snow every chance they get. I dont see any reason to believe they won't fire up the guns as soon as it gets cold enough, as long as there arent any major warmups forecast...

When was the last time JF/BB was open for Thanksgiving? Temps are in the 20s up there as I write this..I don't even know if Killington started blowing yet... :( In October it's already been below freezing 5 nights in Allentown...no smowmaking though...19 inches up on Mansfield...no snowmaking...we'll be skiing in PA in December like normal..The only PA ski area I see open Thanksgiving is Seven Springs..

well, as much as bash PEAK resorts, they seem to be pretty committed to the ski industry (early opening, late closing), TP upgrades, snowmaking upgrades ETC. This is unlike blue ridge, because their primary business was SELLING REAL ESTATE, NOT SKIING. Honestly, blue ridge probably didnt give a shit when they opened or closed. They didnt make much money with JFBB, and the only real reason they kept the mountains running was to increase real estate value in close proximity to the ski areas. Now that PEAK took over, blue ridge can put all their efforts towards building and selling a shitload of condos in all that undeveloped land off of JFM road, and around their new golf course for top dollar, just because there is a ski area right there, and they dont have to worry about running the ski area.

Peak on the other hand, their only source of income is skiing. They are going to do everything in their power to get more customers. They need to increase skier visits, because JFBB, historically is not very profitable. Blue ridge didnt care, because most of their income came from selling real estate, but PEAK definately does.. (though I still dont quite get the season pass validation thing, which may drive some pass holders away)

Well I just got back from the Ski Patrol Meetings at JFBB. Peak Resorts is very positive about when they want to turn on those machines and get the snow onto the mountains.

I just found out that Peak Resorts placed 3 of the New Fan Guns on River Shot to help stop it from getting skinned off like it usually does. They may also widen River Shot another snow cat length or so this season, so you don't get stuck behind someone that shouldn't be on that run and can actually ski the run.

How can they really widen river shot? Elevator is on the right, and the chair lift is on the left... unless they plan on taking out the trees between rivershot and the chair lift... Is that the deal?

As always the JF policy is still in play if it doesn't say closed you can ski it. The entire property will be open unless specified. They plan on having the glades more skiable this season as well.

That is amazing news :) I was afraid PEAK would take away free domain

They also mentioned they would like to open Elevator again. They want to try and put some snow on it and make it skiable again this season.

UH OH, that is not good news.... They should really learn from what happened last time, they basically made an ice chute, and the groomer couldnt get up it again after the first time. They should really just let elevator be, and open it up if and when there is enough snow. ... Unless they plan on blowing snow on it and just leaving the piles.. IE not grooming it.. then i'd be all for it :)

also, whyd they take the sign down and take it off the trail map if they are gonna re open it again this season?

Peak has also said they will allow moguls this year.

If I remember anything else I will add it.

Looks like it's going to be a great season.

Have Fun and Be Safe!

good news, JFBB has been mogul-less for years now. I hope they let huge ones form on draufganger at boulder and t-bolt and floyds at JF :)

Thanks for the update :)

I forgot to add, that even though the entire mountain is skiable that doesn't mean all rules are gone. I know you know but remind your friends(it's amazing how many seem to forget). If you are skiing out of control or dangerously fast and put yourself or others in danger, Ski Patrol will decide if you just need a warning(and a system between patrollers is now in place so all patrollers know you have been warned so you cant get warned twice) or you will be escorted off the mountain.

I know you all will be safe and probably hate the people that are doing this but I just needed to say it.

thats what ski patrol is there for, and should be there for, to make sure people stay safe :) A lot of PA ski resorts seem to forget that, and all of their patrollers are on power trips *Cough CAMEL cough BACK cough** I still remember the day that i got yelled at there for hitting a natural feature (a little jump) on the side of one of the trails there :rofl

JF ski patrol rock :) they keep the assholes in check, while maintaining leniency for people who know what they are doing.

One thing i want to ask you though, is it technically legal to ski that narrow run in between challenge and east mountain at JF? That has always been my favorite thing to do on a midweek powder day, but i was never sure if it was technically allowed. I do know that ski patrol have seen me before and never said anything. I know there is a line at the very top, but no closed sign. (kinda like the risk it cliff....)

Did they put any more than just three fans on the East Mt. side? I thought that entire area should get a lot more fans that just three. 150 fans is a lot of fans, and I hope they didn't just concentrate on using them in the parks, because there are a lot of people who don't do parks.

:rock:rock:rock . I like everything except for the moguls. I value my knees and I think part of the problem that I sometimes have with my right knee is from falling in moguls, a couple years ago. I stay away from them like the plague.

I Love JF :) BB gets too much credit around here. JF is clearly the best ski area in PA, (one of those treasures not many people even know much about) even if its just because of their amazing free domain policy.

on second thought, stay at BB, jack frost sucks ;)

65 additional fans at BB seems like a lot, considering they added a bunch last year. I would have thought that JF would get more than 85...unless if their theory is to flood BB, since it is a smaller mountain and not spread out as much as JF, which would make BB easier to build a deeper base :confused . 85 is still better than what JF had. Is there any word out about if they plan on opening BB again, after the snowmobile races in March?

there would be absolutely no point in investing in all this new snow making if they didnt. As it was last year, they could have kept a couple things open till mid april

I love JF and there is something different than any of the other resorts in PA. It might be that it is surrounded by more forest and trees than most resorts, or the fact that it is spread out wider than the other resorts. I don't know if I would rank it the best, though. It is definately more "speacial" or distinct than the others.

NiftyShifty,

From what I have seen at the mt. and heard from other employees and patrollers they all seem to be SMI Fan Guns. I haven't heard of any Wizards being installed.

SMI makes both the Pole Cat and the Wizzards...that's why I asked. I know they're all SMIs, I was just curious if they were all the same model. The Wizzards are blue, and you would probably notice them quicker than the black Pole Cats.

I am a patroller at JFBB so I mainly know mt. protocal at those resorts. But I am a member of the National Ski Patrol as are the majority of patrollers in this country and we all follow similar protocals. If you ever need me to answer any questions

Here is a question. Do you guys get training on identifying off axis spins in relation to a resorts policy of no-inverts?
