Yeah if I remember correctly, both high speed lifts were purchased from Sunday river, and were both in service for years there first. Not sure what the standard lifespan of a chairlift is, but the 6 has been a mess all season. Chairlift issues don’t excuse the VIP like nonsense though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Snow on lazy, paradise, and upper main was awesome. Can that become the new norm, please? Also, wtf is up with the lifts. 6 was busted on saturday, and intermittent yesterday. VIP line gate for the quad seemed to let anyone through, not just passholders, and the VIP line for the 6 seemed like it wasn't scanning at all, causing people to break through to the left, which it looked like everyone and their mom caught on to that shortcut thus rendering the VIP line useless. Why can't we have nice things?

Depends what you consider dumb. I haven't skied king, but if the climb up to the base of the actual ravine is anything like tucks, it's like skinning up something the equivalent pitch of lazy, maybe switchback at the steepest. It doesn't get hairy til you actually get up into the bowl. Smart call on knowing your limits and not skiing the actual ravine with the ice bulges and weather conditions. Looks like mandatory crampons and ice axe terrain, which at this point in my skiing career, i'm definitely not prepared for, and even if i was, would definitely not want to do solo. If you're talking about the car camping part, it's not my idea of a great time when it's this cold out, but with the right gear you're probably fine. I only have a 10° bag so i'll save the camp-to-ski adventures til it's a little warmer out. @Nipples did you ever find that TGR thread?

wish i knew about this one ahead of time. i took off work for the last one that looked to be a washout, but just got back from vacation so don't think i can swing another day off this week

I've had good luck the first weekend in may every time i've been up there. Definitely don't need skins and touring setup, but I'd rather have my skis on the ground for as much of the climb as possible instead of my back. Probably cause I have heavy frame bindings on heavy, wide skis, though. Something 90-100 underfoot with a lighter binding would probably make packing em not nearly as bad. I have yet to actually get to the weather station at the summit, so that's my goal next time. Bowl is fun, but if there's enough coverage in the snowfields up top, that looks like it'd be super fun.

they've had the tech to do some sort of leaderboard thing (I assume like epic mix) for years since they switched to RFID passed. Always wondered why they never actually did it, as it would give them something to differentiate from the local competition. No more fudging your stats on PASR!

Sweet. My 110s met their demise yesterday at frost so the quiver overhaul is getting out into motion sooner than expected. you don't for some completely random but not at all surprising reason have a set of P14/18s with CAST plates laying around, do you? I'm slightly curious about the boots, but haven't tried anything from tecnica on in years and i dunno if i'm gonna enough to rock the bright orange ski instructor's choice boot.

What'd you get? I'm looking to replace my touring setup (see photo above) with something much lighter, but I'm being very slow on actually pulling the trigger and buying anything. Need new boots, too.

North Conway is pretty mellow; I think there's a brewery there for aprés entertainment and food. Where are you flying out of that you're finding $100 flights to manchester though? Even after paying for a rental car, I don't think driving myself, if I were to go solo, would really be all too much cheaper after accounting for gas, tolls, wear on your car, etc. Also, I applaud you for trying to tackle your fears on your own terms. While flying to new england is certainly not my preferred method of traveling there, if it works to get you over your fear, then it's worth it for you to get yourself off the east coast in the future and enjoy some better skiing.

I would expect conditions to be nothing short of epic. That's a bummer.

I’d agree on an average day. Getting blue on a legitimate pow day mid-week if there’s already a base off trail is pretty fun though.

I don’t understand the JF hate, really. I’ve been a blue passholder literally my entire life and will both defend the place and talk crap about it in the same breath, but I dunno why so many on here think it’s worlds better than blue. Blue has a little more vert and faster lifts, and I guess arguably some more interesting terrain, but on a 6” day, I’ll take frost over blue as long as there’s already some coverage in the woods. Their snow quality and grooming is consistently better than blue’s, and even on holiday weekends, crowds are nowhere near as bad. I think a lot of people are maybe slightly blinded to the fact that MOST people do not get to the lower lot at 7am and stand in line for opening of the 6pack and try and cram as many laps as they can into an hour and a half or two and then peace out. All that said, I’m very curious to see how this season pans out, crowd-wise, with the ownership shakeups in the poconos.

Based on what information? I’m fully expecting it to be some random investment group at this point that gives absolutely no tangible benefit to skiers.

Stowe and Okemo is Epic pass, which gets you a bunch of options out west as well, if you wanna go that route. Cannon and wildcat look pretty cool, and I'd imagine are gonna be waaaaay less crowded than Stowe. Unfortunately I haven't made it up there this year, but have friends who are local there and they said the crowds since stowe went epic have been pretty bonkers on weekends.

Keep checking their snow reports. It should be great coverage based on how much snow they've had this year, but if it warms up quick, things start to melt out and could change pretty quickly. That said, the scene on superstar at that point will be stellar. Top to bottom bumps, people from up and down the east coast all congregating on that one trail to get some prime springtime bumps laps in. It's super fun. Unless you've got a crazy good deal on the grand, don't stay there. I stayed there with my wife last time we were at killy and it is absolutely not worth the upcharge. It's unlikely you're gonna be able to ski in/ski out at that time of year anyway, and it's a long-ish walk to the lifts. Summit lodge is one of my favorite places up there. It's usually cheap, has awesome breakfast for a slight upcharge, they have a bunch of hotel st bernards hanging around the loungy areas, and it's a smaller family run place. It's on the access road, about a 5 minute drive to the K1 parking lot.
