Nipples Freestyle Competition Training

Recommended Posts

This is an attempt to squash a rumor floating around that Nipples is being punished.

Nipples (Steven) wants to compete in freestyle. He needs your help and here is why.

As a parent, I will not allow him to continue to compete on the level he is on, nor will I spend the time and money carting him all over this region without cross training, body awareness, balance and strengthening drills.

Last year, he placed 2nd several times at the NextSnow Qualifiers. Last year, the PA kids who went to the National Competition were cut on the first day of qualifying at Keystone CO. Want to know why? The first day consisted of Slalom, Interview, and Moguls. None of the local PA NextSnow qualifiers rated the kids on those skills last year or this year so far. It showed in last years' results. It probably will show again this year, that the PA kids suck in that competition.

The reason you go to the National Competition is to try and get on the NextSnow team. You have to make it through the first day, then the second day, (park skillz) then onto the team. THAT TEAM (from last year) is going to be featured in a one hour special on NBC on February 11th just prior to the opening of the Olympics. Lofty goal and aspiration.

His agreement with his mother and I was to get race training, so that he has a better chance while at Killington. We got a USSA number, paid a bazzilion fees, now he has to live up to his end of the bargain. It would be much easier and cost effective on his parents to just let him run in the park, believe me when I say that there are a lot of times when I wish he didn't want to compete. We travel way too much.

He thinks it is cool to hate on racers and racers like hating on park rats amongst his peers. He may think that racing is not doing anything for him, but he is painfully aware that all of best freestylers came from different disciplines other than the park. So rather than have to answer from peer pressure about being on the race team, he can say he is being punished. It makes him look cool, I guess? :(

What is not cool is adults advertising or announcing publicly, that he is being punished.

So for those of you who agree - your support and encouragement would be hugely appreciated. He has mad park skillz, no doubt, however the competition in Killington is about being all around good on the snow. Matter of fact, if he was really smart, he would get his snowboard out and get better at riding. (bonus points for having skills in both areas) He forgets that, when he is having fun on the snow and it is time for race team practice to start. If you see me on the slopes, talk to me. I appreciate hearing anyones thoughts negative or not.

Just to add a bit of weight to your side. One of the racers here, the coach's son, WON the Rail Jam competition back in December. He also scored very highly in the Slopestyle comp. I've been looking for those results to have something to post, but haven't found them yet. So race training does help with freestyle, because they work on skiing fundamentals, NOT JUST GATES.

I think that any sort of training regimind that keeps him on his skiis will benefit him across the board. I also believe that skiing/riding is about having fun and getting excercise. so i guess in my opinion just let him do what he wants to do.

i understand you see the need for the cross training, but why force him to do something he dosen't want to do. i've seen kids forced into things or aspects of a sport that they don't really like very much and they always end up just getting really frustrated.

if you are concerned with his balance and other fundamentals, perhaps find another way of cross training. maybe another sport (preferably summer) that works similar muscle groups. no need to force more skiing onto him if he dosen't want it. don't make him OD on the sport before he has the chance to get REALLY good. trust me i did it with ice hockey.

Fun Fact: 1/3 of a Canadian Junior Race Training Video shows the racers in the pipe, throwing 3's off jumps and various other park activities. No rails though I am sure that edge damage outweighs any benefits of balancing on the rails

I am - he wants to go to the competitions

Simple, if we wants to compete and win, then he SHOULD enter a training program.

I agree - keep in mind that we have been recreational skiing for 9 years together. That has been the largest concern that I have had when they decided that they wanted to compete, knowing that they don't know what all is involved or should be involved. I don't mind putting them in a program as like a baby sitter service. But both seem to have a desire to compete to win.
if you are concerned with his balance and other fundamentals, perhaps find another way of cross training. maybe another sport (preferably summer) that works similar muscle groups.
He surfs, skimboards, fruit boots and skateboards, rock climbing is a favorite activity
no need to force more skiing onto him if he dosen't want it. don't make him OD on the sport before he has the chance to get REALLY good.
Oh yes there is... There is no point in spending the money and time carting him around to NextSnow events only to have him disappointed and bad mouthing because he didn't win. I have no problem "pulling the plug" and letting him stay at Camelback in the park.... BTW I compromised with him.. He only trains with the CAT team 1/2 days (about 3 hours) when he is there, which is not that often. Quite often CAT team training has been cancelled due to weather. I think.. out of 24 days he has had .. maybe.. 7 half days of race training...

Let me put it another way.. The kids that won last year over steven have all told him that they didn't know that they needed race skills. I am not going to take another week off and go to that competition if he doesn't respect the format at the finals. Forcing him? no.. All he has to do is tell me that he doesn't want to go to the finals in Killington and I save thousands of dollars. He is happy and so am I!

i play other sports. training can be really hard somtimes but the really hard stuff gets u better physicaly. but then there is the part of u that doesnt want a hard practice or what ever. so u have fun. if ur not having fun then it is going to seem like u have been there forever. i dont know what the ski team is like but if i were nipples i would have fun with it. take practice seriouse for the most part but then goof off and just have fun. and yes pushing him helps alot. i didnt was to go out for soccer one year (becaouse i was lazy) but my parents pushed me. and it turns out im pretty good. haha. but really if ur not having fun its not worth it. dont think of it as a competition think of it as having fun and just do ur best.

i hope this helps

He is very good at them, Ridge and I will watch him out west on the side of the mogul trails because we can't hang. Thanks for picking that part up. CB finally has moguls, we hope to make up there this season but we will be in Breckridge on that date.

There are 6 criteria of the NextSnow Competition in Killington

Personality

Slalom Race

Carving Skills

Moguls

Slopestyle

Big Air

The same thing could be said about nipples...

I tried to get him to change it to Nibbles or shorten it to Nips - but that is the name the kids gave him on the bus from the airport to summer camp in Whistler and he likes it, so I do my best to respect it. I'll give him this, it does create a memory point :woot

Have you seen real J4 mogul skiers? Like the one from Hunter on north? I gotta tell ya that any bump team would have a huge advantage over specialists from the other events, especially now that they are throwing huge air WITHIN the mogul run. They land and are right back into the zipperline bumps. Even coming from someone that prefers slalom/carving, moguls get my utmost respect. It's a shame there's so little opportunity in this area for real bump training.

Sure, in kind of a disgusting way. But that's just my opinion. Maybe when he's older he'll change it to areola.

So your son is telling people he's being punished by having to be on the CAT team and you're are upset that adults are publicly saying he's being punished? Rob, your issue is with your son, NOT the adults repeating what your son is telling them.

:drool

When I lived in Montana there was this girl named Aurelia and she had big boobs and I always called her areola but I pretended it was by accident... :drool She worked as a waitress at Frontier Pies...a good place to get chicken fried steak with smashed tators and some pumpkin pie.... :drool

And to think you don't have a GF, Doug? I just don't understand it. You seem so in touch with what women want to hear :D

I'll take her to Old country buffet and let her have as much as she wants to eat because I'm so generous..she better put out...

Sounds like you have it dialed in. Make sure to show her pictures of ex-GF's and tell her you have a new video camera for later on. Good luck, man!

I have seen some good ones, not up north, have you seen n.... Steven?

He is doing pretty well with what he can throw intermittantly in the bumps
It's a shame there's so little opportunity in this area for real bump training.
CB finally has some growing, but they get killed by the inexperienced skiers. on the other hand the lack of pattern has to make any other run a cake run.
Rob, your issue is with your son, NOT the adults repeating what your son is telling them.

I disagree and I know you would to if anyone even as so much whispered something about your kids. If my kid wants to tell other kids lies about why he is race training, I can understand where it/he is coming from. What I can not understand is how a grown adult who doesn't even know me or my kids personally would spread something like that, especially on this board.

hey papa, i can see where you're coming from and why this is such a big deal for you/him. nextxsnow is, problably, the biggest competition you can go to as a kid. but seriously, if nips doesnt really like training for racing and moguls, i say let him, and have him just do his best when it comes time. this may not be the same for skiing, but in snowboarding NONE of the pros do park/pipe and racing. they do either/or kinda thing. obviously thats not an option for this comp, but in the long run, i doubt nips is gonna want to compete in JUST racing stuff, so i wouldnt make that big a deal about it now. i hope you get what i'm saying

The big deal is that I don't take public critisism well, especially when it is an out right lie spread by a grown adult. I figure I lay all my cards on the table to stop the crap.

ok well i agree.i bet he is awsome at mogules seeing he was doing 180s into them at blue lol..but to also help him get better take him to a gym to work on his legs..and make sure the gym has a tramp and a foam pit theres alot of gyms like this just call places around u and see..the tramp will teach him how to balance on his spins and the foam pit will help to but not as much as the tramp will..or i would suggest u getting a tramp at ur house its a workout and it helped me alot in my spins..also get him more into rollerblade all i did in the summer is rollerblading and tramps and im good at skiing now compaired to what i use to be last year when i started..if u want proof u can ask montageskier he saw me improve everyday.

oh and think about entering him in the montage competition..he will have a really good chance in winning and getting another sponcership cause i know jeep and rossi will be there and idn who else but probably a few other shops from around here.ill try and find out this weekend.

Can there be a "Parenting Help" forum on this site? This does not belong in "Park & Pipe" cuz it doesn't have sh*t to do with it.

For what its worth, the kid is twelve. I know my parents were tellin me what to do till I was like 17 or 18 and they still try. Papa, I don't see why you're defending yourself to anyone. You're his dad, I'm not telling you to grow some balls or anything, but how old are you??? do what you want man!. I don't think anyone is gonna submit your name to childrens services... If Nipples is complaining then do what my parents used to do and give him a swift kick to the chest to knock the wind out of him and then it wont be so loud.

LOL! thanks for the advice xnick - He roller blades when he isn't on the computer in his basement, he has a cool little jib park built, and.... already does a private tramp class on mondays focusing on strengthening and stretching - Thursdays are the double mini's . the big one with the belt and then the foam pits :woot It freaks his coach out with him corking and underflipping so I had to give her several DVD's to get her "buy in" - We have a tramp at home and will tape up ski edges accordingly.

Yeah - instantly.... after three months of tramp class he landed his first attempt at a 900 at BC on xmas eve. He attributes the tramp class to the spin progression and good set-ups at BC. He is working on switch 7's now, switch 5's are stylish, I like them. He is corking 5's now but they are ugly. 270 on, switch up, 270 off just about any box.

do what you want man!.

I am. :lol I am typing on this message board.

You're such a tool Rob. Blaming other people for a rumor your own kid starts. Seriously, though I'd suggest you have him tone that down. Coaches tend to have a problem with kids that act like they don't want to be there.

Well, good luck with that, and I'm glad to hear that he can bang out a zipperline in real moguls. The rest is pretty easy.
