Yet another great thing about parking in the valley: easy walk out to car to add/drop layer, if necessary.

To chop it into a rod?

Nice to see the glade getting some love...

We looked at Coming Soon from Paradise upwards. Looks like fun, dodging all the people standing on Paradise at that intersection. I don't know who they're kidding about opening it up if there's enough snow. I guess if by "enough snow" they mean like 4', because they have a bunch of runoff control logs strung from edge to edge all held there by rebar driven into the ground and sticking up 2-3' out of the ground (at least they have orange caps on them). I doubt they're gonna move them to open up the run temporarily.

I spread it out across the year pretty well, between ski trips, Musikfest and such. I'd probably ski the mornings like @toast21602 if I lived closer to the mountain.

If only I was retired like @Shadows thought...

I was awake, pouring rain at the house. Checked the webcam and saw the summit socked in. Had my fill of fog skiing for the week and forecast was for more rain. Decided to get some shit done around the house instead. Have to do some night sessions this week to make it up. Weather is really depressing.

Son had his last final this morning and Groomer Dan from Blue was back in town for a few days and could only ski today, so I decided to take the day off and ski the morning, then head up to Wilkes-Barre to pick the kid up and kill two birds with one day off. Rolled into the valley at 8:00am to find only about the lower 1/3 of the mountain visible through the fog. They were working on grooming school hill out. Why they wouldn't leave the whales for the incoming rain is a wonder. The quad was running and some maintenance guys were doing something with the 6-pack. Other than that, the place was pretty vacant, except for a couple of cars here and there. Walked through the lodge to find they still had some setup to do, as there was still a bunch of crap piled on the bar. 4 of us lined up at the quad at open. Paradise looked to be open, so I made my way to it through the dense fog.. Up at the top, visibility was about 10', if that. The snow was buttery soft and held a perfect edge, except there were surprise rollers, ditches and divots that would come out of nowhere. Caught up with the other bumpers and we skied the rest of the mountain, even Burma. Snow was superb everywhere. The warmth and the mist did away with all the marbles. Skiing the bumps was challenging, since you could only ski them by feel, but they had just been reseeded and were soft, so they broke in easily. Also skied the spines which also had some excellent snow. Overall the snow was excellent, probably the best it's been on all year so far. Would have been an excellent day, if the visibility wasn't so horrible.

I was thinking that they were going to pull a Camelback and leave the whales sit until after the potential precipitation this weekend.

Or ski poles?

We usually see some circling when hanging out in the valley parking lot.

Mmmm, "great" is pushing it. Ok, perhaps.

I usually get the half coffee, half hot chocolate, when it's brutal cold out.

You should see the ticket line at Blue on those weekend days after a snowstorm. The line goes out the door and up the sidewalk. Its gotta be 30 mins. long then. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I thought they put them in place first then groom the snow around them to hold them in place.

Looks like they changed the valley cam view once again. Hmmm... Wait a minute. WTF did they do with the pass reader gates???
-
Oh yeah, I agree that the lights are diddly in comparison to running the pumps and compressors. Just a diversion in the topic of lights while waiting for the weekend, that's all.

Yeah, it wouldn't be cheap, but it's a capex and could be amortized over a number of years in addition to the electricity savings that would be ongoing as well as the lifetime of the LEDs should be substantially longer. I'm sure the maintenance guys could do it and the existing power lines for those sodium bulbs have to be overkill for the LEDs. A quick Google results in some direct replacement bulbs for sodium vapor bulbs (I'm sure with the age of Blue's, they probably don't have them, but still) and claiming 60-70% energy savings!
