Tbolt had some huge rocks and drops in it the lower you went, that were really sketchy unless there was alot of snow. i saw many people get messed up in there. top was pretty good. solitude glade was ok, it was fun when you could get off the lift and get right in there and basically go through that to E-glade, then elevator. below risk it, to the right of Floyds was fun too with snow, but it was really just a big ditch. at one point we named it Roberts Run if im not mistake. so, R2's legacy lives on.
Icecoast Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 These recent posts bring back so many good JF memories. The snowmaking was phenomenal. Having a small amount of manmade off trail made every storm a blast. There were even cliffs to drop. The place really was "Jackson" Frost during the peak of Peak's ownership. These photos are from February 2014. The last photo of the small hike park is hilarious. that little park was better than anything vail has built at JFBB since they took over. 8
JFskiDan Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 The off trail stuff was what would keep your attention away from short runs with intermittent steep headwalls and slow lifts. if you were there to ski groomed trails, most times you were doing it wrong. I have gone back since my season pass exit, and although it was skiing, which is always good. i got bored quickly. 2

I think this was @mute1080's first ski hill away from Blue Mountain back in the day - but I might be incorrect? I remember having a great tour of the place with @JFskiDan and @RidgeRacer (probably in 2014) when basically everything was in play and there was minimal time spent on anything groomed. 1

That was a ton of fun. that was after a pretty big snow, and being that Frost didnt get big traffic, everything was still quite good. if my memory serves correct - the lift stopped, and after a few minutes, a bunch of us jumped off. someone said "that was the first time i was told to jump off of a ski lift by a lift attendant". I think even GSS put up with some slow lifts for a day. there were a few takers on Risk it, you being one of them. i think there was also an exploratory mission off of telstar before risk it that was mainly bushwhacking, and required a hike out from what i was told. Jordan (if you remember him) had always mentioned about going back there 2

I think my last time skiing JF was 2012 around this time of year was an actual PASR day and Johnny style was there in his full garb and everything was skiable and I think that’s the day Phillycore jumped off a stopped lift. There was another PASR day a few years earlier with ThinkSnow Greg, Melissa, Sexkitten, BobLikesCats and even Moe Ghoul where it was like six below zero at arrival. 1

C1erArt Posted January 16 Author Report Posted January 16 Nice day today. Decent crowd, not a ghost town like last Friday. Only had to share a lift chair once towards the end of the day. Some slick spots in Challenge and TBolt. Lightning and Rivershot ROTD, smooth, edge able, and not crowded. A couple dozen guns going on Telstar and Floyd’s, and a few on Lehigh next to One Park (which had a lot of nice soft blow over on it). Even had a burger, fries and drink for $16 (with pass holders discount), a few more runs to burn off the carbs and called it a day.
Barb Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 Love that pic! Proof I used to snowboard. I have great memories on JFBB. My kids learned there. First season I had one on either side of me and had to lift their butts up onto the chair. Second season Stephen joined the race team and came to lunch every day with branches sticking out of his helmet. And That’s when David insisted I learn to snowboard since he wanted to learn. We loved going to the Poconos on weekends, winter and summer. It’s sad to hear Vail has let things go downhill so much. 1 1

Didn’t know you had a race kid. My son was on the team from 2001 until he graduated from HS in 2008. Both he and I weren’t that good skiers at the start (not that I am particularly good now). We did the budget plan: eBay race skis, home tuning, no camps, local races (except we went to Denton one year in our camper). Was at Boulder in the beginning, then in the Frost building that has the Ski patrol now (that was pretty nice), then in the road side cafe section of the main lodge. After Vail took over they did away with a lot of activities like radio station fridays, cardboard race, tubing, scaled down the park features. Still has great grooming. 1

My son was older when he started and never really fit in except with one or two of the guys. Some kids had been in the program since they were 5.

Budget thing is good some of my friends have young kids into sports and they go to meetings and they’re like this will involve alot of travel and expense and that’s scary when it’s like dance or hackey sack. Thats so messed up a small percentage of people throw shade my way and it’s their loss I might not have good snacks but I have cool stories

Harold one of the weekday blue guys told me a local golf course used to have a weekday deal for seniors where it was $15 and included lunch and the lunch would have been like $12 or something. I wanna buy food sometime at the blue burgers stand on the side of Burma if it’s even open when I’m skiing 1
C1erArt Posted January 24 Author Report Posted January 24 (edited) Nice day at Frost with the DW. Everything was in very good shape, except for skiers left on exhibition where they normally put bumps. For some reason, they didn’t groom it and there were some slick spots. Maybe they are going to bump it up. They weren’t running the challenge lift so you had to trek over to the east mountain lift to get to the top of challenge or thunderbolt. There was a fairly stiff head wind crossing over to thunderbolt so it was pretty under utilized. A fair amount of people there, but never had to wait for a chair, shared a chair only once, and the slopes were usually clear for your run. Large college group there (I assume), but they didn’t crowd the slopes. Solitude and Telstar were open, and Floyd’s had a lot of whales on it, waiting to be pushed out. Challenge glade was working its way further into the woods. Some hay rolls with wood stakes for erosion control over on east mountain in areas that could be skiable if we get a lot of snow that might be problematic. They extended slope side parking over to the old tubing area which adds a lot of ski in/ski out area. Max speed 6 or 7 mph faster, and Carv Ski IQ 3 or 4 points higher than my usual at Blue Overall, a nice relaxing day. Also found out I can control podcasts with my Apple Watch Siri, so I did that going up and played tunes going down. Edited January 24 by C1erArt 2
C1erArt Posted February 13 Author Report Posted February 13 (edited) Decided to hit up Jack Frost for a late morning Friday session. Temperature in the high 20s, bright sun, light wind. Slopes not too crowded in the morning, nice packed powder mostly (except for the bottlenecks across from the bumps which were a little skied off). Still had bumps on the Challenge head walls (with narrow mostly skied off groomer path on trail edge) and skier’s left of Exhibition and Thunderbolt with nice smallish naturally spaced moguls. Part of Challenge and TBolt glades open. Thunderbolt lift was not running. Lodge was crowded for lunch, but not completely packed. Came back from lunch and saw the Thunderbolt lift was running. The Thunderbolt trail (and even Challenge) quickly got pretty crowded pretty quick, and found that it was because they had shut down East Mountain around 1 o’clock. Vail never misses an opportunity to disappoint. Left a little early to give room to the kiddies. But overall a nice session, good time had by all. Edited February 13 by C1erArt 1

Food was Ok, Blue’s is better.
