  1. Drove up here Sunday. We had a little r@in on our arrival, then temperatures plummeted, with a light dusting of snow during the night. Monday at Sugarbush was less than stellar. Flat light and icy. Didn’t even bother with Castle Rock, as there were warnings all over of thin cover. Slide Brook Express Quad not running 🙁. Got about 6 inches of snow Monday night, then a sunny cold day. Conditions at Mt Ellen just about perfect. Looks like another sunny day on tap today. A picture of the sweet cabin I rented and some more pics of mountain

  2. Conditions are so so, but at least they’re blowing new snow. Razors is closed and they’re blowing the whole slope. Also, blowing on the upper park and the very top of freefall. Other than that, they’re blowing in a few high traffic spots. Curzi’s is closed for Team Lehigh. Freefall was in pretty good shape, they didn’t really do anything to nightmare, but Main Street was the run of the day. The upper section was pretty nice, some slick spots and marbles developed in the middle, but the bottom was in really good shape.

  3. After being back home and back at work I feel like it was all a dream. Thanks to @AtomicSkier, @GrilledSteezeSandwich, @mute1080 and @NazarethSkier for a super memorable trip. Gonna be hard to match this one in the future.

  4. Good: hanging out in NMSkis massive fireplace suite that had a window sill and couch. Bad: him sitting on a Luggage rack the first day cause while there were plenty of towels but not enough chairs, I remedied that situation by stealing two chairs from the hallway on the floor above. Ugly: two days I got over to his room in my khakis and noticed there were boxer shorts inside my pant leg. It’s cause after the bagel place in the AM I rip off pants and underwear and get into different underwear and ski pants and then I guess rush to get dressed when the Biergarten opens. Weird wild stuff. Paint me like the French girls.

  5. Drove up yesterday for the discounted skiing. Last 45 minutes up turnpike and 81 in light snow. Parking was in the upper lot. Cleared and got blue sky by around 9:30, temp around 24 degrees. Not completely open yet, had guns going all day on Iroquois, Tuscorora, and Kickapoo (trails closed). Snow was very firm and fast, could carve easily. Some small marbles developed here and there as day went on, nothing serious or troublesome. Upper Tunkhannock was usual bump field. Lower Tunkhannock was some of best snow on the mountain. Got 18 runs in. Only lousy snow was the icy boiler plate mess at lower Seneca in the run off to the double chair. Wife made the comment that you see a different caliber of skier at Elk. Blue sky, no kids, no lift lines, no crowd. JADIP.

  6. Just go, I'll be up between 5 and 6 depending on traffic. Dirtwolf I think will be there and if it's terrible terrible snow we'll have even more fun grinding the spine.

  7. Yeah, all that is true, and to your point I'm not against anyone doing their thing either, but when it impacts me that's where I draw the line. If you want to dangle on a chair high enough up in the air without the safety bar down when I'm not on the chair with you, by all means, go for it. I'm all for you exercising your individual rights. I don't believe states should even have laws governing safety bar use like some do. My biggest issue riding lifts is that I have absolutely no control over when they're going to stop and how fast they're likely going to. I've been on some where when they hit the E-stop you go hurtling forward and without the bar down, you're likely to fly off the chair if you're not paying attention. On my bike, I'm mostly in control and statistically they're more dangerous, but like you said the perception of risk isn't the same. It's not the speed that kills, it's that sudden impact with the other immovable object or earth that does. And then we get to the top of the lift, raise the bar, slide off and hurl our bodied down a slope of frozen water at 50 MPH on one or two pieces of wood and metal with trees, snow boulders, rocks on either side. Yeah, we're crazy, but that's where the fun is!

  8. January 31st..day 7 of 7 Hey all, I’m back from my final ski day of this trip. Today was very cold to start and we didn’t even leave for the mountain until 815am. Temperature was a balmy -23. Arrived at the hill around 835am, sat in the car a few because we didn’t want to stand around waiting for the gondola to open, booted up and loaded the gondola at 859. First run on amphitheater was more of that 80 mph cord..it was nice. Up thunder and repeated ampy again and then one more time before taking Grand to south pass traverse back to thunder followed by Grand to Sublette chair. Grand on the left side was so good. It was also super super empty..like one out of every ten chairs with people for the first hour. In the first hour we didn’t the gondola, five thunder laps and one Sublette lap and skied Rendezvous trail one time. R-trail was decent but more traffic than the other runs so a bit more skied off. We then did four more Laps off of Thunder, mostly skied Grand to south pass traverse and then on the last run continued on lower Tram line which was more chalky than cord and as we descended back to the village it was like skiing into a ice box as it was still in the teens below zero at the base. Debooted and had lunch at the Four Season. This turned into maybe my best trip here. First two days had shallow powder and low crowds…next two days deep deep powder and crowded..fifth day was leftover powder and moderate crowds and the last two days were empty groomer days. Thanks everybody for reading along. Mute had a blast here and NMSki did as well and I’m glad Nazareth Jay came along for comic relief…also glad Jay was able to find his lotion.. JADIP

  14. For realz ? Risk tolerance in humans is a highly varied witch doctor like stew of brain chemistry, experience, etc etc. To TP4's point you don't take risks in other areas but perceive of it differently ? I know you do, I know everyone of us does. Indiggio you have a motorcycle no ? Zz I believe you do not use a helmet ? Johnnylaw smoked mad cigs for years and years. Again I'm not saying anything against anyone. Motorcycles are cool af and if you want one you should have one but by any measure it's orders of magnitude more dangerous than riding a lift regardless of bar status but the key is you dont feel it is because of a million factors specific to your experience. Some people won't ride on motorcycles by default, some people don't put the lift down, some of us looooooove nicotine it's all the same thing perceptions of risk but not actual risk which is always unknown. Risk tolerance is very personal and prescribing ones views to others is impossible as the concept is so nebulous. What's everyone thoughts on the false vacuum state of the universe or that gamma ray burster that probably isn't pointing directly at us ? Do those things matter ? Who's to judge ?

  16. Back to Sugarbush today. Fun day. Sunny and cold. Lots of runs off Lincoln Peak. Jester was a blast, did that multiple times. Ate it on Sunrise late in the day. Looked floofy from the lift, but looks are deceiving… a sheet. Plus I was getting tired. On the fence about returning to Mt Ellen or doing Sugarbush again. Thought maybe we could see Mt Washington from the top today.

  20. Good: That NazarethJay surprised us Bad: That NazarethJay is always late for supper and being picked up for skiing… Ugly: Skid marks on the side of my toilet…I don’t poop good in Jackson hole…only had two decent logs the rest were straight mud maybe cause I didn’t eat any veggies for a week.

  21. No but I let atomic Jeff try it. Best tip was the redhead waitress at the Mangy moose. She got a $94 tip on a $206 tab. Just felt like making her day better. She even was telling her co worker about it and came back and thanked me. Last day at the Mangy moose was only $56 and we left $80 total.

  23. Last night we got on the snow about 515, we could see the guns running for a refresh on the mountain and full blast at tubing. First run was Main Street, and it was a complete ice rink. But not just an ice rink, the special kind with sticky sticky piles of freshly blown snow. I think I had a flashback to that Saturday morning on tuts lane. We only made it three runs thanks to icy conditions and getting stuck on the quad for about 10 minutes. When Becky’s lesson was over we were outta there, couldn’t get the boots off fast enough.

  28. Good: 50” of new snow in 50 hours. Bad: delayed openings Ugly: Almost having a massive collision cause some nimrod turned uphill into a cat track I was going downhill on…if he would have collided with me I would have gone off on him. All he said was sorry…fuck him.

  30. Good: Had one of those rooms at the 49er that has both an interior and exterior entrance which is convenient for loading ski gear into the car. Bad: I typically shower before dinner and most days there was barely any hot water cause that’s when everybody showers. Key card also didn’t work after 7 nights even though I was staying for 8 nights. That’s always the case. Ugly: The recliner in the room, I did not sit in it but there’s surely lots of semen/jizz/cum/spunk/throat mayonnaise/baby batter..whatever you want to call it on it. Id only sit in it if I had a hazmat suit.

  31. Good: Lots of good food at restaurants. Bad: Lots of terrible service at restaurants, people never believe me how bad and slow service is and items forgotten on and on and on. Ugly: falling on my ass in the mens room.

  35. Yeah at a place like Breck it’s actually snowier in the spring time where at Jackson hole the conditions are usually trash by late march unless it snows cause it’s lower and a lot of the mountain is East and south facing.

  41. that's like saying i have 3 flat tires but my one's good, while i'm filling up an extra spare to put in the trunk. i also asked blue's chat what the deal was with the display next to the quad. their response was basically (honestly, literally) we have no idea, you tell us when you find out.

  42. The best terrain on the mountain is off of Thunder and Sublette. I don't find the tram particularly comfortable jammed butts to nuts in with 100 people. Rbowl on a pow day is some of the worst conditions between total white out, and tracked out. Rode it once this trip just because Thunder was down for a mechanical issue and wanted to get up to Sublette.

  43. I thought today was one of the best mornings in awhile. Everything had a little crust but it was smooth and infinitely more together. You can get the ski to step if you gave it too much edge but grip was pretty good even with the crust. As C1er said it was the best condition, nobody home so point and shoot from wherever you wanted. It's been snowing here for the last hour which has to be a good omen for things to come.
