  1. just cause you are sidelined from riding doesnt mean you skip the end of season party. You wont be the first person to attend with hardware to keep body parts together.

  3. What an absolutely gorgeous evening out here. No buses, low crowds, spring like snow... Choppy in spots. Fast in others. Great night

  4. Vail resorts ? Really ? That's so.......basic. If there is one thing Blue mtn isn't it's basic. Weird means different and different in this sense is mostly good. I can't knock her at the end of the day if she takes the $$ and runs, the ski business is shitty and who knows if anyone else would want it. That said I would be disappointed if she sold, Blue is Blue, it has character and is interesting, Vail is wonderful but does the EC need another Disney type place ? What about another faux Austrian village like Stratton or a billion other places ? 5 high speed 100000 packs won't make the skiing any better and it's sure as shit going to make almost everything else worse. Does blue sometimes make some rather interesting choices ? Sure but they also employ people almost entirely from the area. Think about if you can even name another resort that does that. Besides skiing fast on Paradise they let us do pretty much whatever we want. When it snows they have never once said a word to me about skiing wherever. Fuck this weekend there is a dude who's going to make Creme fucking Brulee in their parking lot. The owner walked into the parking lot and asked a bunch of men drinking beer at 1030am what we thought if she asked us to move and when we were not so thrilled did absolutely nothing. Think about that for a second, what if we did Sausage Sunday outside of a karate dojo, in most of the world that shit just doesn't fly. I've been lots of places, there is a place for Vail resorts but there is also a place for slightly weird places that break the mold. Skiing shouldn't be golf and if saving a couple hundo on traveling places is something you'd give up alot of things money can't buy than Vail resorts is right up your alley. Vail resorts loooooooves bubble lifts, what more do I have to say ?

  6. How someone gets to your age with such little understanding is beyond me. Life is not about maximizing roi, money itself is nothing more than a tool, a group delusion we all participate in. Its certainly your right to take such an accountants view of buying a pass but ultimatley its something you can't understand and what makes you a shitty skier. Skiing is not about edge angles and turn radius, those things are actually simple. Skiing isnt from the mind but from the soul. You can think all day about laying arcs and nothing happens, it's a doing and like Zen Buddhism says doing and thinking aren't the same thing. To you the lot is a place to get some free meat but for us it's the equivalent of the town square. A place where like minded individuals although different in many ways can come together to have a good time. Other people that ski blue 3 times a week and can talk for five minutes about lower main st. Community, our tribe, now that is pretty rare in this world, infinitely rarer than a thousand bucks So no slightly cheaper access to mtns I already have access to is not worth that community but based on the way you ski that's not something you'll be able to understand. Its passionless, ski by numbers.

  9. So rolled outta the house at the bright hour of 3am. Picked up the buddies and headed up to Dover Vermont. Got up here around 9 915. Soon after cracked that bottle of proper 12 and got at it. Completely blown away with mount snow. Had an awesome day and captured some of it thanks to Antman’s GoPro that he let me borrowed (thanks again). Cathrina is incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun as I did before riding terrain before I hit the runs here. Saving the half pipe for Sunday and cannot wait for it. Other than that the entire mountain was incredible. Dope snow. Very very little patches of ice on maybe one or two trails. Glades were super fun and not icy at all like blue. Can’t wait to get after it tomorrow.

  11. Not that i think this will happen, most of this is a conversation Jlaw and i had........but..... no more parking lot shenanigans...or we would probably be banished to some muddy shithole way in the back lot. Classing up the lodge and parking lot will take money they will need. Its unlikely they will just swoop in with their big bag of cash and just start throwing money at the place. The lifts need to be classed up way before the lower lodge, and i still dont get why any of us care about the lower lodge. The top lodge is cool, been there once when we had lunch last year on a pow day. I have said it before, Blue is kinda fucked up sometimes, but it is our kind of fucked up. If you are really on board with Vail buying the place, make sure you are on board with paying more for skiing there, whether its an Epic pass or just a Blue pass, no complaining from you guys. Personally, i would gladly pay more for my pass, if it cut down on crowds. But i dont think im on the Vail boat thus far.

  12. So me and my squad got back late last night from snow. Saturday was such a blue bird day. No clouds in the sky but my two friends who both ski wanted to try snowboarding (dumb move). Needless to say it took over an hour to get down the mountain with them and the one ended up breaking his foot somehow. So I spent most of the day Saturday on the North side of the Mountain and it was awesome. Had some icy patches but the diamonds were challenging and fast. Roller coaster was a dope run with it set up almost like a boarder cross trail with huge turns and whales to pump off of. Saturday night we ended up going to the snow barn. No idea what to expect but they had a soul funk band playing. Was a little different speed but tons of people around. Sunday made the trip. Woke up to a fresh 2 inches of POW falling fast. Got to the mountain and they had three of the four lifts to take you to the summit closed due to wind. Me and my one friend got to the summit and it was mad windy. Snow still falling probably ended up around 4-5 fresh. This made for a great day in the glades. The super pipe is no joke. Super icy up on the tops of it but was still fun to hit it. By the end of the day Sunday my legs felt like death but heading out later today to possibly boulder.... Cheers all!

  16. I learned so much today! The class was the AIARE companion rescue. We had 2 hours of classroom instruction then went into the park. The area we practiced in has lots of mellow, avalanche free terrain. My friend and I already said we would go back soon to practice. They also have a beacon area you can practice in. Weather was nice, no wind and fairly warm. Snowing hard all day, tons and tons of powder! We did several drills in groups and worked on finding a buried beacon and probing, then digging it out. The digging is intense and tiring. By the third drill we were all working more efficiently and digging the beacon out faster. Last drill the guide buried the beacon uphill (previous 2 drills were buried downhill). My friend and I were a team and guide told us to take a break so we were having a snack, skis off and fairly far away from us. Then he calls “avalanche Jenny is buried.” We were like, fuck since we are both still not proficient at the dynafit bindings clipping in. So we made the decision to run uphill and start our search just in ski boots......mistake. Snow was so deep we were postholing to mid thigh each step. Then we couldn’t stop laughing saying “Jenny will be dead by the time we reach her.” By the time zeroed in on the burial site we were totally out of breath. Good lesson for both of us. I demoed a pair of DPS Zelda 1 touring skis. 106 underfoot so much fatter than I am used to. There wasn’t much free skiing today so I can’t tell if I like them or not. I don’t have to return them until noon tomorrow so I am going to run up to Eldora and try them out there. If I like them I am buying them. My ‘used’ boots felt great, no hot spots and my feet stayed warm. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  18. Decided to pull the trigger in the Zelda’s. Every shop in town is out of stock. The place I rented them from gave me a really good deal on the demos with skins. At the very least now I can go play around in the snow whenever I want. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  26. Make no bones about it, i am notorious at work for being able to "make something work" thats broke, with a clothes hanger, some duct tape, and a hubcap, but it doesnt mean i fixed it or refurbished it.

  27. I cant take credit for this idea, since i heard it last year from someone else. But the early season dilemma of making snow top to bottom ran through my mind as well. IMO, refurbished means older machine made to run like new. I cant for the life of me figure out why they cant make those lifts operate consistently.

  28. Then you might as well make main street go to the bottom of whatever that teaching hill is, and put up another super duper high capacity lift. 3 high speeds to the top. But as Indiggio pointed out, getting lots of people to the top fast, isnt necessarily a good thing.

  33. Vail bought a few smaller ski areas in the midwest a few years ago. They would buy Blue for the same reason; to get people to buy the Epic Pass then travel to their destination resorts out west and rent hotels and condos, buy lessons, buy meals etc. They buy feeder hills and then raise the day ticket prices to entice people to buy the Epic Pass. If they did buy Blue a day ticket would likely be in the $90.00 range.

  34. I would gladly pay extra for a pass if it included access to big time western resorts. But not so much if the pass included small NE and Ohio mountains like the Peak Pass.

  37. My plan is to buy the Peak Pass the day we first want to go to a Peak Mt this spring (which could be this weekend - girls are pushing for a change of pace). Then if the Vail / Blue purchase comes through, I will buy that in March next year and go out to CO in the Spring.

  43. Day 4 on Friday started out nice. Only a tiny bit of wind and plentiful sunshine. I warmed up on a pristine groomer then skied the trees under lift 2. After that decided I wanted to make a hike up to the far reaches of West Basin to attempt to find the entrance to Wonder Bowl. It wasn’t too bad to find, views were amazing and it skied great. I took lift 2 back up to the top and took my skis off to hike again, but saw a couple people skiing down Kachina Main and the lift was running. I high-tailed it over there to lift 4 up to Kachina basin but when I got there the lift was stopped and the liftie said that it wouldn’t open today. Must have been patrol up there. Oh well, did another high speed groomer, then back to the top. At the top of 2 I made a hike/traverse all the way to where Tresckow ridge splits off to the kachina hike and traversed through the trees and dropped into Tresckow proper. Wow, this north facing, off the beaten path run still had nice powder! Gotta work for it a bit sometimes I guess. At the base I took lift 1 up and skied Ernie’s into the natural halfpipe that meets North American which held some nice soft snow. Had an early lunch inside the St. Bernard which was amazing. Reuben croissant and soup, then headed back out for one last afternoon at my favorite place in the world. I took a lower traverse under lift 2 towards West Basin and found a gate at the rope line letting me enter Oster and Spitfire without having to hike and deal with the extremely gnarly entrances up top. I had never skied these runs before. These reminded me of Tower 3 at Jackson in terms of pitch, width and snow quality. Did this a couple times. Really nice. Did a few groomers, got some water at the whistle stop cafe, then did a hike up to Stauffenberg to finish myself off. On my way up there were some slow ass hikers that I passed and one of them had a BMR (blue mountain racing) jacket on! I harassed the shit out of them on my way by. Stauffy was filled with chalky wind blown and so so nice. Planned to do it only once but had to go back one last time. After that I skied down to the children’s center to get my kids for a top to bottom run with them and my mom. My kids are making parallel turns finally, skied all over the mountain this week, and my son is obsessed with bumps! Had such a great time. I haven seen coverage like this at Taos since the 90’s, and it opened up a lot of terrain that usually isn’t open or wrecks the skis. Already dreaming up my trip for next year. Views from atop west basin Stauffy Wonder Bowl Spitfire The Y Mom and kids Silly faces at Apres!

  44. Day 5: Partial sun and warm 22° when we started our last day. Another 1" or 2" overnight. Conditions again are excellent. Sure is nice being able to see. The weekend crowd was evident in slightly more lift lines and somewhat more crowded trails. 9 runs then off to have a cup of soup and a couple of beers at The Hellroaring Saloon then caught the bus to town. Dinner at the Buffalo Cafe. Great Burgers. Whitefish has everything. A nice mountain with tons of varied terrain for all abilities. Not huge but big enough. Great Restaurants, a Microbrewery, a genuine fantastic Dive Bar and great locals. And all at very reasonable prices. I can see why Sibhusky moved here! If you get the chance, you will be impressed too... Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  45. Day 2: started two hours earlier and we were at the top of the mountain at 10:00 with a temp of 10°-- and bright sunshine no wind. Pretty similar to the first day. Exploring and learning more of the trails. We skied out the back side of the mtn most of the day, then had a late bowl of chili at the on mountain Hellroaring Saloon and Eatery. The original 1949 lodge. Clouds began forming by the afternoon and light snow was predicted. Back to Whitefish and a great Italian meal at Ciao Mahmbo for dinner. Shrimp fra diavlo... Day 3: Wow a heatwave, 22° but breezier and fully overcast. 2-3" of fresh snow made skiing real nice. Again did most of our skiing on the backside and ended the day again at the Hellroaring. Tonight's meal was at the Tupelo Cafe. Buffalo meat loaf, garlic mash etc.. Day 4: 27° and snowing! Our breakfast stop was crowded so we caught the 9:40 bus and found about 6" of fresh with snow still falling. Unfortunately the famous Whitefish Fog was making its presence known. We made the mistake of taking the high speed to the top ist lift. It was so foggy you couldn't see your ski boots. Truly Socked In!! Two braille runs then decided to go back to the base and ski the lower lifts. On the way back down, Big Al found a tree well. Fortunately the trail we were on was so steep that he ended up on the downhill side and wasn't buried. He lost one ski and his poles before entry and had a terrible time freeing himself of his remaining ski and extricating himself. We were below him and had a hell of a time working our way uphill to help. 10 minutes later Al was back in his skis and us Old Phartz were beat. That was it and after getting to the base we called it. By that time the sun broke out on the bottom of the mtn but the top was still socked in. Just another experience we'll talk about for the rest of our lives.. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
