I learned so much today! The class was the AIARE companion rescue. We had 2 hours of classroom instruction then went into the park. The area we practiced in has lots of mellow, avalanche free terrain. My friend and I already said we would go back soon to practice. They also have a beacon area you can practice in. Weather was nice, no wind and fairly warm. Snowing hard all day, tons and tons of powder! We did several drills in groups and worked on finding a buried beacon and probing, then digging it out. The digging is intense and tiring. By the third drill we were all working more efficiently and digging the beacon out faster. Last drill the guide buried the beacon uphill (previous 2 drills were buried downhill). My friend and I were a team and guide told us to take a break so we were having a snack, skis off and fairly far away from us. Then he calls “avalanche Jenny is buried.” We were like, fuck since we are both still not proficient at the dynafit bindings clipping in. So we made the decision to run uphill and start our search just in ski boots......mistake. Snow was so deep we were postholing to mid thigh each step. Then we couldn’t stop laughing saying “Jenny will be dead by the time we reach her.” By the time zeroed in on the burial site we were totally out of breath. Good lesson for both of us. I demoed a pair of DPS Zelda 1 touring skis. 106 underfoot so much fatter than I am used to. There wasn’t much free skiing today so I can’t tell if I like them or not. I don’t have to return them until noon tomorrow so I am going to run up to Eldora and try them out there. If I like them I am buying them. My ‘used’ boots felt great, no hot spots and my feet stayed warm. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk7 points

Day 4 on Friday started out nice. Only a tiny bit of wind and plentiful sunshine. I warmed up on a pristine groomer then skied the trees under lift 2. After that decided I wanted to make a hike up to the far reaches of West Basin to attempt to find the entrance to Wonder Bowl. It wasn’t too bad to find, views were amazing and it skied great. I took lift 2 back up to the top and took my skis off to hike again, but saw a couple people skiing down Kachina Main and the lift was running. I high-tailed it over there to lift 4 up to Kachina basin but when I got there the lift was stopped and the liftie said that it wouldn’t open today. Must have been patrol up there. Oh well, did another high speed groomer, then back to the top. At the top of 2 I made a hike/traverse all the way to where Tresckow ridge splits off to the kachina hike and traversed through the trees and dropped into Tresckow proper. Wow, this north facing, off the beaten path run still had nice powder! Gotta work for it a bit sometimes I guess. At the base I took lift 1 up and skied Ernie’s into the natural halfpipe that meets North American which held some nice soft snow. Had an early lunch inside the St. Bernard which was amazing. Reuben croissant and soup, then headed back out for one last afternoon at my favorite place in the world. I took a lower traverse under lift 2 towards West Basin and found a gate at the rope line letting me enter Oster and Spitfire without having to hike and deal with the extremely gnarly entrances up top. I had never skied these runs before. These reminded me of Tower 3 at Jackson in terms of pitch, width and snow quality. Did this a couple times. Really nice. Did a few groomers, got some water at the whistle stop cafe, then did a hike up to Stauffenberg to finish myself off. On my way up there were some slow ass hikers that I passed and one of them had a BMR (blue mountain racing) jacket on! I harassed the shit out of them on my way by. Stauffy was filled with chalky wind blown and so so nice. Planned to do it only once but had to go back one last time. After that I skied down to the children’s center to get my kids for a top to bottom run with them and my mom. My kids are making parallel turns finally, skied all over the mountain this week, and my son is obsessed with bumps! Had such a great time. I haven seen coverage like this at Taos since the 90’s, and it opened up a lot of terrain that usually isn’t open or wrecks the skis. Already dreaming up my trip for next year. Snow was fantastic. Visibility up high was crap, but thankfully it was so sparsely crowded that it wasn't a big issue. Got on the snow a bit after noon and made 9 runs over almost 2 hours. Had to scarf down some chicken fingers from the lower lodge before starting. Started with NightWeaver and ran just about everything once. Lazy, Switchback to Burma chair, Widow maker, Burma, Sidewinder, Razor's (great snow on Razorback, almost untouched), Paradise, Challenge and finished with a Main Street run. Razors was run of the day. Would have loved to stay and ski more, but the drowned rat feeling drove us away. Might head up tomorrow night for a night session, since we're planning on Trivia Tuesday the next day2 points

Hey All, I’m back from another fun session at Blue mountain the true mountain. I arrived at the lower lot at 1055am after a quick pit stop at Sheetz for a breakfast sandwich. I was all out of sorts and my phone had slipped under my seats and my Herman was loose..my brain was foggy and so was 2/3rd of the mountain. It was a bit like groundhogs day of 2 weeks ago complete with shadows..Atomic Jeff as well. Razors and Main Street were the runs we skied the most. Razors was oh so smooth and fast thanks to the Urea and Main Street still has fresh cord after 1230 on the upper right side. Paradise and lazy were also nice and you could let the run on those trails a little more. It was damp and moist out and not many people. The quad only was running on the east side. Skied 10 runs in an hour and 40 minutes and then had some resin and perpetual beer and cheese balls..didn’t see Enjorales and dad at all but I believe they were there...also saw some sketchy people in the lot..now I know what ZZSlope was talking about. I’ll be back out on Tuesday night. I think I only took two pictures today.1 point

Yeah, the crowds surely picked up earlier than usual today. Last weekend it was 10am, and today at 9am the quad became packed. Thankfully, I was alone this time, so could take advantage of VIP gates, even though they periodically malfunctioned thereby gathering a small crowd of anxious passholders. Sometimes it was clearly a human factor, I saw one dude repeatedly trying to go through the VIP gate with a regular ticket. Amazingly, nobody close to him would give him a clue. For those who shy away from the Summit lodge, there was a Carve 4 Cancer event up there. Some free stuff, tacos, demo boards, live music and even a big stage in Vista ballroom for a concert to be had at 2:30pm. Couldn't wait that long... And yeah, the snow and sun were so good!1 point

Gatorades from the loaf and jug is my move. Slam a big one first thing in the AM.1 point

Next time pick up two 32 ounce gatorades at the loaf and jug..out in Jackson I like buying a liter of Iceland water at the bagel place. It just tastes real good and usually almost finished with that by boot up time along with other liquids...I try to drink water with beer when drinking and with dinner but sometimes I barely touch it..I know most don’t drink much soda but sometimes having a root beer or coke with a meal is good for energy levels or even hot cocoa.1 point

Also nice that Taos is an annual family tradition. It’s part of the schedule. See you at Blue this week.1 point

Hey All, I’m back from a fun night session at Blue mountain the true mountain. I arrived at the lower lot at 635pm and it was in the mid 20s with light winds. In the house were Nastar Glenn, MBike Mike, Atomic Jeff, Johnny Law, PARidge, TP4, VTMark, Salty and probably some others I missed. I skied from about 655-845 I skied nightmare to dreamweaver once and razors the rest of the time. Conditions were top notch with a few slick spots around the Root rollers on dreamweaver. Was fun skiing amazing how I went from being tired and having a headache on the drive up to flying down the mountain and then drinking heady topper thanks to Nastar Glenn...temperatures dropped to around 20 degrees and they closed at 9 instead of 10...all in all was a fun night session. I’ll be back Saturday AM I don’t know if you’ve heard..no it’s not about the bird..yeah I know you’re thinking the bird is the word but no Saturday is when it’s gonna be really good..trust me..see everybody Saturday AM!!1 point

Ok 14. Highlight of the night was when Atomic said to stfu on the lift. It would be great if he had middle seat on a long distance flight between myself and Steeze.1 point

Day 3, damn was it windy. I’m happy I got any skiing in today, I was really surprised there were no wind holds to start off. Started off the day with 2 steep tree runs off of Bambi ridge. First did Sir Arnold Lunn, then Lorelei Trees. Pockets of powder, some nice bumpy flow and a bit of crusty snow in the more sparse trees. Went over to the backside where it was less windy and skied Hunziker Bowl, Totally Wiard, El Funko and some groomers. Some nice wind-filled spots here and there. Made a hike up the ridge and skied Zdarsky again which I’m really enjoying. I made plans to meet my wife and mom for lunch so I took 7a up to the top and dropped into the Werner Chute into Longhorn for a 1,600 ft vertical thigh burner. The winds filled up Werner with 3-4 inches of snow and it skied beautifully. ROTD for sure. After lunch, lifts 1 and 2 were shut down so I drove up an icy mountain road to the backside and parked at the Bavarian which is near the bottom of lift 4. Did a couple runs until they shut down 4 and then I called it a day. Needed a beer after the drive down, it was rough in the rental car. All in all it was a good day and I have some left in the tank for tomorrow. Sir ARnold Zdarsky West Basin Totally Wiard1 point

I don’t like trees, not confident enough to do them. The back side has some fun stuff, but the lifts back there are sooooo slow. I blocked out CB for myself 3/18-22.1 point

Gonna get some more of that, as betwen my last post and this we just landed a gig playing an event that draws 40,000 people every Spring. Best gig yet 🙂1 point

I skied there yesterday, then dropped off my skis to be waxed so I don’t even have them right now. To be honest, I am getting bored with Eldora. I love that it’s close and I don’t have to kill a whole day with travel, but I need to get to some bigger mountains soon.1 point

@PSUfly Winter park is having a special that you can ski 3 days in April for $47 per day. Tickets must be purchased by 3/18. I70 closed again this morning because of more avalanche debris reaching the highway. Most of the mountains got at least a foot in the last 24 hours. Abasin may not be opening today due to extreme avalanche concerns over the pass.1 point

Where are you flying out of and are there connections? That’s less than half of what I paid for my southwest flights Newark to Denver 4-15-4-22..I have hotel, rental car and airfare paid for..just need lift tickets, food, and cash for safety supplies. Final night at Denver airport as well..I might use points and stay somewhere really nice. Getting to go out west alone with a wife and young kid is a feat. Buy the wife souvenirs or something nice in Colorado. Don’t cheap out and get her stickers.1 point
