Rode up the first chair with JLaw and lapped the big three on the east side until about 1030, then headed over to Main Street. All of the slopes were in pretty good shape, and the light dusting of snow made things pretty smooth. Sugar piles never really developed even on lower paradise, lower Main and Home Stretch. Skied Main Street till about noon when it was getting a little skied off up top but still carveable. Hopefully they will put a bunch of snow down this week to last through March. Very light crowds, The black runs were very quiet.5 points

For realz ? Risk tolerance in humans is a highly varied witch doctor like stew of brain chemistry, experience, etc etc. To TP4's point you don't take risks in other areas but perceive of it differently ? I know you do, I know everyone of us does. Indiggio you have a motorcycle no ? Zz I believe you do not use a helmet ? Johnnylaw smoked mad cigs for years and years. Again I'm not saying anything against anyone. Motorcycles are cool af and if you want one you should have one but by any measure it's orders of magnitude more dangerous than riding a lift regardless of bar status but the key is you dont feel it is because of a million factors specific to your experience. Some people won't ride on motorcycles by default, some people don't put the lift down, some of us looooooove nicotine it's all the same thing perceptions of risk but not actual risk which is always unknown. Risk tolerance is very personal and prescribing ones views to others is impossible as the concept is so nebulous. What's everyone thoughts on the false vacuum state of the universe or that gamma ray burster that probably isn't pointing directly at us ? Do those things matter ? Who's to judge ?4 points

people that die by becoming tangled in thier bedsheets is also becoming more of a thing as well. there is also a correalation between that and revenue generated by ski resorts. Who knew, right?4 points

The best terrain on the mountain is off of Thunder and Sublette. I don't find the tram particularly comfortable jammed butts to nuts in with 100 people. Rbowl on a pow day is some of the worst conditions between total white out, and tracked out. Rode it once this trip just because Thunder was down for a mechanical issue and wanted to get up to Sublette.3 points

I'd have to agree that today was significantly better than anything in the past two weeks. It was nice to have some firm non-sugar snow.3 points

January 31st..day 7 of 7 Hey all, I’m back from my final ski day of this trip. Today was very cold to start and we didn’t even leave for the mountain until 815am. Temperature was a balmy -23. Arrived at the hill around 835am, sat in the car a few because we didn’t want to stand around waiting for the gondola to open, booted up and loaded the gondola at 859. First run on amphitheater was more of that 80 mph cord..it was nice. Up thunder and repeated ampy again and then one more time before taking Grand to south pass traverse back to thunder followed by Grand to Sublette chair. Grand on the left side was so good. It was also super super empty..like one out of every ten chairs with people for the first hour. In the first hour we didn’t the gondola, five thunder laps and one Sublette lap and skied Rendezvous trail one time. R-trail was decent but more traffic than the other runs so a bit more skied off. We then did four more Laps off of Thunder, mostly skied Grand to south pass traverse and then on the last run continued on lower Tram line which was more chalky than cord and as we descended back to the village it was like skiing into a ice box as it was still in the teens below zero at the base. Debooted and had lunch at the Four Season. This turned into maybe my best trip here. First two days had shallow powder and low crowds…next two days deep deep powder and crowded..fifth day was leftover powder and moderate crowds and the last two days were empty groomer days. Thanks everybody for reading along. Mute had a blast here and NMSki did as well and I’m glad Nazareth Jay came along for comic relief…also glad Jay was able to find his lotion.. JADIP3 points

I thought today was one of the best mornings in awhile. Everything had a little crust but it was smooth and infinitely more together. You can get the ski to step if you gave it too much edge but grip was pretty good even with the crust. As C1er said it was the best condition, nobody home so point and shoot from wherever you wanted. It's been snowing here for the last hour which has to be a good omen for things to come.3 points

Having a sudden diabetic emergency or cardiac arrest while driving can kill or injure others as well. I'm just here to stir the pot. Continue on gentlemen.3 points

Probably the best groomer day I’ve had at JH. The -29F start probably kept people away but it was quite pleasant. The place was completely empty. At 10:30 the Thunder lift line had nobody even standing around. The liftie look bored. The snow was 11/10. The boys let them run a bit today. Was nice to really crank some turns.3 points

I skimmed through most of the TRs so maybe I missed it but it seems like you guys rarely ride the tram. Any reason why? Is that the touristy thing to do? Lol. Anyways thanks for the TRs and pics.2 points

That one scared the shit out of me. I used to fly like a birdie over falls but now I take it way easier.2 points

Oh no, that's bad for circulation. You should probably go sockless for max circulation.2 points

In the newspaper article, part of the investigation outcome was to better enforce lowering the bar. If there was a freak accident when I worked in industry, you could either engineer a solution or try to change behavior, but you had to do something to reduce the chances of it happening again. This leads to a lot of seemingly stupid stuff, particularly regarding safety shields on moving and rotating equipment. You can’t engineer dumb out of people.2 points

It always amazes me that people insist on raising the bar like 2-3 poles ahead of the top station, typically at the highest point above the ground. There's plenty of time to raise the bar even after the last support, which is about where we typically raise the bar. If/When I'm riding with strangers I'll usually keep my foot on the rest until we near the last support, just to piss people off. I'll usually get the "Ready?" far earlier and will reluctantly and slowly take my foot off the rest. Why people think it's cool to not put the safety bar down is beyond me.2 points

If that's the little whiteface lift that runs adjacent to the mountain run lift but goes all the way up to the little whiteface peak then I would agree. Incredible views of the high peaks from there too.1 point

Alot of UT had no bars for along time, including the old Supreme which ran considerably higher. Nobody fell off because you didn't fuck around and rode with an arm over the back because it's just common sense when your 100 ft above the ground. Putting the bar down is also common sense but children aside if you can't successfully navigate a moving couch I have no idea how your going to handle skiing. Look at the new sixer, the ass cup is 50 degrees and 2 feet deep. Down is way more dangerous than up.1 point

But eating junk food is not a risk? Again, how many heart disease deaths vs chairlift deaths? Yet, you don’t say anything about something a million times more dangerous1 point
-
Couldn’t it be argued that people with vices such as junk food are hypocrites for criticizing those not using the bar, yet don’t criticize themselves on the March to heart disease? Chairlift falls are not the leading cause of death in America1 point

Yeah but it’s fun skiing on squeaky snow. Had some Dale boots years ago that didn’t like cold cold weather. After a-10 weekend at Smuggs all of my plastic boot buckles cracked.1 point

I believe it, of course it’s gonna be in the single digits at Blue Saturday morning but I’m thankful for maybe two days of round the clock snowmaking to get us through next weeks warm spell.1 point

If you’ve ever been on a lift with the bar up and a roll back occurs it’s enough to convert an atheist. It happened to me at Hunter in the late 70’s , the person I rode up with insisted on keeping the bar up. I grumbled a bit but relented. We were at the highest spot possible when the lift jerked to a stop and proceeded to roll back about 50’ which swung the chair forward and violently backwards when it stopped abruptly. The angle of the chair I would say went past 45° Scared the crap out of me !1 point

Was up there tonight for little over an hour...Fast soft snow cone stuff.....Only steep open was sasquatch...Which is getting some bumps on it...and while the snow was good there are a ton of brown/thins spots....Hopefully temps go in there favor and they can get some snow down....Fun night again and the place was empty...Went inside to use the bar restroom and the lodge still looks pretty good for being 20 some years old.......1 point

First thing I thought of when I saw it was that it brings attention to the ugly rusted out pole that it's attached to. Then I noticed the ugly rusted out pole and forgot all about the screen because all I could look at was the ugly rusty pole.1 point

For those interested in reading more about the big storm that just dumped on Jackson hole. Those throwing around that this was all time don’t have short memories. This was the largest 48 hour total since 1974-75 https://www.jacksonhole.com/blog/50-in-50-hours1 point

We saw this last night. Becky was like a moth to a flame, so distracted trying to get up to the lift1 point

What kills more people per year skiing…head injuries or lack of safety bars on chairlifts? Yet helmets aren’t required…1 point

January 30…day 6 of 7 Hey All, I’m back from another fun day of skiing at Jackson hole mountain resort. Me, NMSki and Atomic Jeff left the 49er at 755am and NMSki dropped off his luggage at the Cloudveil where NazarethSkier Jay was staying. Got to the mountain around 830ish and it was a ghost town. It was -29 in the village lot and I put my boots on as fast as BenM. On the way to the lift I stopped into the ski shop and bought a balaclava for myself and bought Atomic Jeff one as well $82 for both including tax, better than getting frost bite. Got in the gondola line around 850am and just a handful of people. My vape was frozen and I finally got it working on the lift and a guy asked me if it was weed and I said yup you won’t some and he told me not to vape in the gondola so I didn’t. Took a couple rip van winkles at the top when Jaybird was snapping pictures. Down Amphitheater to thunder and it was that 80mph cord JH is famous for…it was so good and so empty and a pleasant change of pace after two giant pow days and a lot of chowder yesterday. Up Thunder and did a repeat of Amphitheater and was so good and empty that we did a third run on that before taking a beautiful Grand to Sublette. Up Sublette and Bivoac was groomed and it was the most please soft packed powder imaginable. Then skied down R trail to south pass traverse to Thunder. Up Thunder and this was NMSki and NazarethJay last run as they were going to take an Uber back to town around 1030. We went down Laramie which was so good. I was going maybe 40-50mph on the right side and NMSki game flying down the left side easily exceeding 60mph woooo. We exchanged goodbyes and then just me and Atomic Jeff. Up Sublette again and another Bivoac run over to Thunder. Up Thunder and skied upper amphitheater to Nez Perce traverse to Casper area. Up Casper lift and skied under the Casper left then left over to lower Kemmerer which was ungroomed and up the Teton chair. At the top skied a beautiful Crags run on two other people on the run I skied past onto the right side of the Apres Vous terrain to the AV lift. Up AV and a screamer on the right side again right to the base. Ended up with 11 runs and just shy of 20,000 vertical feet in two hours. You really rack up the runs with all but one lift being high speed combined with about 1/8 of the normal amount of people. It was so empty that our last of 5 times up Thunder, there weren’t any people in the liftline, not even anybody waiting for their friends like zero people crazy. Today was the best bluebird groomer day I’ve ever had at Jackson hole…mainly due to excellent snow and no people. My toes were a little frozen as well as my nose…it was super tough getting my ski boots off. We then went to the Mangy moose and shared nachos with beef and a pitcher of Wilson IPA, $56…we each left $40 and peaced out and now back in town relaxing. I didn’t take many pictures due to the cold but will post what I have. Now it’s about -10 in town. Tomorrow should be slightly warmer.1 point

@ JAC waiting for departure. Snow King’s website says open at 9 but I had feeling lifts don’t start spinning at that time. Could see the lifts not moving at 9:01 so I switched to the touring set up and got a $8 Uber. -15° with real feel of -28° but didn’t feel like it, especially when moving. Only had an hour and made it about half way up the hill without seeing anyone. Great way to start the trip home.1 point
